  • The Mader model of muscle energy metabolism simulates key metabolic exercise phenomena. [Journal Article]
    Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2026 Oct 06; 123(40):e2525555123.Rothschild JA, Dunst AK, … Heck HPN
  • Energy metabolism matches adenosine triphosphate (ATP) resynthesis to hydrolysis even during abrupt transitions such as exercise onset. In 1984, Alois Mader proposed a mechanistic model that captures this regulation through 33 coupled differential equations linking oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis, and the phosphocreatine shuttle via adenosine diphosphate (ADP), phosphate, and pH feedback. • Human sign-tracking and its relationship with attentional biases for alcohol. [Journal Article]
    PLoS One. 2026; 21(9):e0358192.Heck M, Lesenfants D, … Quertemont EPlos
  • CONCLUSIONS: The findings provide preliminary support for a positive association between sign-tracking tendencies and alcohol-related attentional bias, consistent with theoretical predictions, although the effect was small and should be interpreted cautiously. In contrast to previous reports, sign-tracking was unrelated to alcohol consumption. The attenuated effects likely reflect methodological constraints, including low reward salience and the passive nature of the task (e.g., fictitious token reinforcement). Further refinement of human PCA paradigms (particularly regarding conditioned stimulus properties, reward type, and participant engagement) is needed to clarify the boundary conditions of sign- and goal-tracking and strengthen their translational validity.
  • The symbiotic shift: How AI is reshaping rehabilitation and the future of work. [Journal Article]
Work. 2026 Sep 28; :10519815261491691. [Online ahead of print]Al Musawi HKWORK
  • BackgroundThe rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into healthcare and industry is often framed as a threat to human roles. Within rehabilitation and occupational health, this polarized discourse risks obscuring more nuanced possibilities for human-AI collaboration.ObjectiveThis article challenges the dominant automation narrative by arguing that AI is instead catalyzing a symbiotic …
  • Physical Therapy Provision After COVID-19 in the Netherlands: Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]
    JMIR Public Health Surveill. 2026 Sep 28; 12:e88633.Veldkamp R, Spreeuwenberg P, … Meijer WMJP
  • CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the potential of routinely collected health care data to describe real-world physical therapy provision for COVID-19 in Dutch primary care. Patients showed severe perceived fatigue, reduced functional capacity, and lower-limb strength at the start of physical therapy. The amount of physical therapy declined over the first 2.5 years of the pandemic, differed by age and gender, and was generally lower than the amount reimbursed by the Dutch government through basic health insurance.
