- Addressing the challenges to mental health and wellbeing for oral healthcare teams. [Journal Article]Br Dent J. 2026 Aug; 241(4):234-235.BD
- The mental health and wellbeing of the dental team is of paramount importance in ensuring the delivery of oral healthcare. This perspective emphasises the importance of developing mechanisms of supporting the oral healthcare team. We propose a tripartite approach: a practitioner support network; a mechanism for support of members of the dental team who are referred to the General Dental Council; …

- Scaling linear-model breeding values to the liability scale: an application to pig binary traits. [Journal Article]
- In commercial pig production, many important traits are recorded as binary phenotypes. For such traits, threshold models offer an appropriate framework but are computationally intensive. Thus, linear models are widely used to obtain genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV); however, these are on the observed scale (phenotypic). This creates the need for a robust method to approximate GEBV from li…

- A lifelong approach to promote effective self-management in adults with type 1 diabetes: the DAFNEplus research programme including a cluster RCT [BOOK]A lifelong approach to promote effective self-management in adults with type 1 diabetes: the DAFNEplus research programme including a cluster RCT. National Institute for Health and Care Research: Southampton (UK).BOOK
- CONCLUSIONS: Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating plus did not lead to greater falls in glycated haemoglobin at 12 months compared to Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating, but these falls were double those reported in previous Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating randomised controlled trials. Sixty-eight per cent of participants showed clinically relevant improved glucose levels. Those in Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating plus reported significant falls in diabetes distress, positive well-being and qualitative research reported positive experiences of Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating plus among participants and health professionals.
- A Bayesian spline-augmented piecewise exponential model with spatial frailty for under-five mortality in Nigeria. [Journal Article]Front Epidemiol. 2026; 6:1826352.FE
- The Cox proportional hazards (PH) model is widely used in time-to-event research, but its validity depends on the PH assumption, which can be violated in child mortality studies where hazards vary with age. Piecewise exponential models (PEMs) relax this assumption by partitioning follow-up time into intervals. However, standard formulations impose constant hazards within each interval and typical…

- Effect of programmed cell death protein-1 inhibitor combined with platinum-containing dual-agent chemotherapy regimen on gut microbiota in Lewis lung cancer model mice. [Journal Article]Front Microbiol. 2026; 17:1885048.FM
- CONCLUSIONS: Combination therapy affects both "response-favorable taxa "and "response-unfavorable taxa associated with immunotherapy, and the ultimate impact remains dependent on the ratio of the two types of flora. Predicted metabolic pathway analysis using PICRUSt2 suggested that the combination regimen may not further reduce predicted functional pathway abundance beyond that observed with chemotherapy alone. However, these predictions require validation through direct metagenomic or metabolomic approaches.

- The assessment of air quality in unprotected hospital areas: an opinion paper. [Review]J Hosp Infect. 2026 Jul 23; 176:4-10. [Online ahead of print]JH
- Regarding air quality, modern hospitals include both 'protected' and 'unprotected' areas. Although recommendations exist for maintaining good air quality in protected zones, guidance for unprotected areas remains limited. This gap poses a significant risk, particularly for immunocompromised patients, who are more susceptible to acquiring potentially life-threatening healthcare-associated infectio…

- Advancing fat graft survival: from adipose-derived stem cell mechanisms to next-generation regenerative strategies. [Review]
- Autologous fat grafting is widely used in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery because it is easy to harvest, well tolerated by the host, and produces natural-looking results. However, unpredictable graft resorption-with reported volume retention ranging from 30% to 80%-remains a major obstacle. To overcome this, two cell-based approaches have been developed: the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), …

- The Human Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Pain and Pain Modulation: A Review and Activation-Likelihood Estimation Approach. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite the dlPFC large cortical surface area, these findings suggest that both the percept and inhibition of pain by placebo engage a similar focussed area of this region. Better understanding of exactly which cortical components of the extensive cortical pain system are involved in pain perception and modulation is critical for refining novel treatments such as non-invasive brain stimulation which seek to target and modulate specific sites of cortical processing to alleviate pain.

- Decomposing wealth-based inequality in modern reversible contraceptive utilisation in India: evidence from national family health survey, 2019-21. [Journal Article]
- Though modern contraceptive prevalence has increased significantly across all wealth quintiles, a substantial gap in the utilisation of modern reversible contraceptives persists among women in lower socioeconomic groups. Nevertheless, very few studies have explored the same. This study assesses the magnitude and underlying factors of wealth-based inequalities in the utilisation of MRC. The study …

- Neurobehavioural Genes Associated With Growth in Dusky Kob (Argyrosomus japonicus). [Journal Article]Anim Genet. 2026 Jun; 57(3):e70130.AG
- Growth is a complex trait, influenced by numerous genes and environmental factors that transect various physiological pathways. This study sought to characterise the relationship between neurobehavioural development genes and growth in dusky kob juveniles. Five candidate neurobehavioural genes were identified from the literature and assessed for gene sequence variants. Thirteen SNPs in two genes,…

- The Role of Sport Coaches in Promoting the Health and Wellbeing of Athletes with Developmental Disabilities. [Journal Article]Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2026 May 08; 23(5).IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Three main conclusions emerged. Athletes and coaches were aware of health deficits and knew of ways to reduce them. Both appreciated the contribution that coaches could make through motivating athletes and providing training activities but were dependent on suitable resources being available to them. Engagement with families and available health and social care services was essential. Health-oriented, sporting activities offer promise in improving the health and wellbeing of persons with developmental disabilities, particularly in less affluent countries with fewer health professionals and poorly developed primary care services.

- Incorporating climate impact in health care decisions: new criteria to be tested in the Netherlands. [Journal Article]Int J Technol Assess Health Care. 2026 May 21; 42(1):e55.IJ
- One of the ways in which healthcare's climate impact can be reduced is by taking greenhouse gas emissions into account when deciding which treatments are reimbursed and/or included in clinical guidelines. In a report for the Minister of Health, Welfare, and Sports in the Netherlands, we explored how this idea could be put into practice. We developed a set of two criteria: greenhouse gas emissions…

- Basin-scale eDNA metabarcoding reveals freshwater fish biodiversity patterns across major river systems in Türkiye. [Journal Article]J Fish Biol. 2026 Apr 22. [Online ahead of print]JF
- Freshwater fish biodiversity is undergoing a rapid decline worldwide due to habitat fragmentation, climate change, invasive species, overexploitation and pollution. Yet, for many regions, including biodiversity-rich but underrepresented areas such as Türkiye, large-scale assessments of species diversity and distribution remain limited. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding offers a powerful, non…
