- Residual dynamic arch index but balanced plantar loading after medializing calcaneal osteotomy in children with symptomatic flexible flatfoot: a matched-pair pedobarographic study. [Journal Article]J Pediatr Orthop B. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]JP
- Flexible flatfoot alters plantar loading and may necessitate surgery. Medializing calcaneal osteotomy (MCO) aims to restore the foot tripod. We compared dynamic pedobarographic parameters in children with flexible flatfoot after MCO with those of matched controls, with the arch index as the primary outcome. This matched-pair comparative study included children who underwent MCO ≥12 months previou…

- Evans Calcaneal Osteotomy in Flexible Flatfoot Deformity: A Podiatry Institute Perspective. [Review]Clin Podiatr Med Surg. 2026 Oct; 43(4):617-629.CP
- The Evans calcaneal osteotomy is a powerful lateral column lengthening procedure that creates multiplanar correction in the flexible flatfoot deformity. The procedure was popularized within podiatric medicine and surgery by Dr James V. Ganley. The Podiatry Institute faculty modified the procedure over the years. It has stood the test of time as a reliable procedure with good bone healing and pred…

- A Sustainable Natural-Rubber IoT Smart Insole for Remote Body-Load Monitoring: An Observational Gait Comparison in Flexible Flatfoot. [Journal Article]Sensors (Basel). 2026 Sep 08; 26(18).S
- Flexible flatfoot (pes planus) alters lower-limb biomechanics and plantar-pressure distribution, raising the risk of pain and injury. Laboratory gait analysis with optical motion capture and force plates is the reference standard but is costly, space-constrained, and ecologically limited. We present the design, fabrication, and validation of a low-cost, sustainable smart insole for Internet-of-Th…

- Effects of Orthotic Interventions on Pain, Balance, and Plantar Pressure in Flexible Flatfoot: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Every domain rests on a single small study, so no general efficacy claim is supportable. The most defensible finding is mechanical: load shifts from the heel and lesser metatarsals to the medial midfoot, as a medial arch support is designed to do. The pain estimate is not robust to instrument choice within its own trial. GRADE certainty is very low for every outcome; certainty for plantar pressure began at low because the contributing study did not randomize allocation. The two nonrandomized studies were additionally appraised with ROBINS-I, at critical and serious risk, respectively. Adequately powered randomized trials with a defined comparator and a pre-specified primary outcome are required.

- Flatfoot and artificial intelligence: Can language models be trusted for patient education? [Journal Article]
- Flatfoot (pes planus) is common in children and adults. Although often asymptomatic, it may alter lower-limb biomechanics and contribute to pain or injury. Patients and caregivers increasingly use artificial intelligence chatbots such as chat generative pretrained transformer (ChatGPT) and Google Gemini for medical information, yet their responses on flatfoot remain insufficiently studied. This s…

- Impact of Material Stiffness on Medial Arch Support and Stress Redistribution in 3D-Printed Insoles for Adult Acquired Flatfoot Deformity. [Journal Article]
- Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) results from the collapse of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA), often managed conservatively with foot orthoses. While 3D printing enables rapid and cost-effective production of insoles, the biomechanical impact of different printing materials remains unclear. This study combined material testing, finite element (FE) simulation, and compression testing to…

- Role of the posterior tibial tendon in plantar pressure distribution across progressive stages of ligamentous insufficiency in a cadaveric flatfoot model. [Journal Article]Clin Biomech (Bristol). 2026 Sep 15; 140:106966. [Online ahead of print]CB
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the posterior tibial tendon plays a critical role in distributing plantar load and minimizing hindfoot overload through various stages of ligamentous failure. While posterior tibial tendon unloading consistently increased hindfoot loading, its influence on medial-lateral balance was variable. These findings support early interventions that preserve or augment posterior tibial tendon function to maintain biomechanical stability of the hindfoot.

- Combining three-dimensional ankle exercises with short-foot training improves proprioception and dynamic balance in female karatekas with flatfoot: A randomized controlled trial. [Journal Article]Phys Ther Sport. 2026 Sep 21; 82:101995. [Online ahead of print]PT
- CONCLUSIONS: Adding 3DAE to SFE produced greater improvements in foot posture, proprioception, and dynamic balance than SFE alone, with the clearest advantage in multidirectional balance, a pattern consistent with the greater peroneus longus and evertor recruitment associated with the diagonal movement patterns of 3DAE. Because the SF-3DAE group also received a greater volume of supervised exercise, this contribution cannot be fully separated from a general training-volume effect. Whether these improvements translate into enhanced athletic performance or reduced injury risk was not assessed and requires further study.

- Body mass index is positively associated with flatfoot and inversely associated with hindfoot valgus in school-aged children: a cross-sectional analysis of 3,292 screening records. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: BMI was positively associated with flatfoot and inversely associated with hindfoot valgus, while no significant association was observed for mild hallux valgus. These cross-sectional associations describe operational scanner-derived screening phenotypes and should not be interpreted as causal effects or clinical diagnoses. Prospective studies with documented anthropometric quality control and validated clinical or radiographic measures are needed.

- An Evaluation of the Short-Term Results on the Pericalcaneal Joints of the Evans Procedure Applied to Adult Patients with Pes Planovalgus. [Journal Article]J Am Podiatr Med Assoc. 2026 Sep 10; 116(5).JA
- Background: Adult acquired flat foot deformity (AAFD) is a triplanar deformity characterised by collapse of the medial longitudinal arch. The most frequently used surgical method is the Evans calcaneal osteotomy. It is usually used in the paediatric age group and there are very few studies related to the use of the modified calcaneal osteotomy procedure in adults. The aim of this study was to eva…

- Does lateral column lengthening reach the ankle? Lateral calcaneal lengthening for flatfoot and medial talar dome osteochondral lesions: A weight-bearing CT 3D modelling analysis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The model confirms that Evans LCLOT produces a triplanar deformity correction, increasing the inter-surface distance at the anteromedial tibiotalar joint adjacent to the medial OCL. Patient-specific modelling may therefore inform preoperative planning when a talar dome OCL coexists with PCFD.

- CONCLUSIONS: Calcaneo-stop arthroereisis provided significant and sustained clinical, functional, and radiographic improvement at a minimum follow-up of three years. - Effects of different foot orthoses on muscular frequency spectrum during the swing phase of gait following ACL reconstruction: a cross-sectional, mixed-model within-subject study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Foot orthoses, particularly medial arch-support and double-density designs, are associated with acute changes in lower-limb neuromuscular recruitment, especially during the high-demand deceleration sub-phase. These findings suggest potential alterations in motor unit recruitment patterns and muscle coordination during gait in individuals with pronated feet following ACLR. However, given the acute experimental design, the results should be interpreted as associations rather than causal effects, and further longitudinal studies are required to determine potential clinical implications.
