- Predictors of outcome in 215 patients requiring emergency department thoracotomy: A 2-year prospective study in a large urban trauma center. [Journal Article]Surgery. 2026 Sep 07; :110607. [Online ahead of print]S
- CONCLUSIONS: For patients presenting in arrest requiring emergency department thoracotomy, all parameters plus a cardiopulmonary resuscitation duration of 12 minutes are predictive of mortality. Seventy-five percent of patients can be excluded from emergency department thoracotomy. Emergency department thoracotomy should be applied selectively to patients sustaining penetrating cardiac injuries and some vascular injuries.

- Q-GOAL study: quality in gynecologic oncology advancement for learning: a global perspective. [Journal Article]Int J Gynecol Cancer. 2026 Oct; 36(10):104868.IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrated the diversity of the workforce delivering gynecologic oncology surgery globally. These findings highlight the need for internationally harmonized training standards and a minimum level of surgical exposure, while recognizing the differences among health care systems worldwide.

- Prevalence, risk factors and comorbidities of overweight and obesity among adults in Qatar: a cross-sectional analysis of the 2023 Stepwise Survey. [Journal Article]BMJ Open. 2026 Oct 05; 16(10):e110307.BO
- CONCLUSIONS: The combined prevalence of overweight and obesity was high in the Qatar population (74.2%). Family history of obesity and low HDL cholesterol showed the strongest associations with an increased likelihood of obesity among the surveyed individuals. The findings support a primary care-led approach to obesity prevention in Qatar, prioritising middle-aged adults, women and individuals with cardiometabolic conditions, consistent with national NonCommunicable Disease priorities.

- Introducing the Moyo device for intrapartum fetal heart rate monitoring among women with high-risk pregnancies in a low-resource setting: a quasi-experimental study. [Journal Article]BMJ Open. 2026 Oct 05; 16(10):e099069.BO
- CONCLUSIONS: Introduction of the Moyo device for continuous FHRM was associated with a reduction in perinatal morbidity among women with high-risk pregnancies. We recommend a stepped-wedge trial to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of scaling up the use of Moyo in lower-health facilities.

- Cardiac warning symptoms in paediatric out-of-hospital ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest survivors. [Journal Article]Open Heart. 2026 Oct 05; 13(2).OH
- CONCLUSIONS: Almost half of paediatric OHCA survivors had warning symptoms prior to their event, representing potential missed opportunities to identify an underlying diagnosis prior to OHCA. These findings highlight the need for more education, both for medical professionals and the general public, about 'red flag' symptoms.

- Nationwide analysis of mortality and causes of death in heart failure: updated insights from the Thai Heart Failure Registry (THFR). [Multicenter Study]Open Heart. 2026 Oct 05; 13(2).OH
- CONCLUSIONS: Among Thai HF patients, mortality remains high, with distinct patterns of CV versus non-CV deaths across left ventricular ejection fraction phenotypes. Targeted strategies addressing ischaemic heart disease, rhythm management, fluid status and electrolyte disturbances may reduce mortality.

- Electrochemical simultaneous sensor based on CaZrO3@attapulgite hybrid nanocomposite for environmental monitoring of metronidazole and nitenpyram pestanal. [Journal Article]Environ Res. 2026 Oct 05; :125850. [Online ahead of print]ER
- In this study, an environmentally friendly, highly selective, and sensitive electrochemical sensor was developed for the simultaneous determination of antibiotic metronidazole (MTR) and pesticide nitenpyram (NTP) using a calcium zirconate@attapulgite-modified glassy carbon electrode (CaZrO3@ATP/GCE). The hybrid nanocomposite was synthesized by a hydrothermal and simple sonochemical route that ena…

- Plant-based food groups and cardiovascular disease: inverse associations with variable mechanistic support. [Review]J Nutr. 2026 Oct 05; :101861. [Online ahead of print]JN
- This review integrates recent evidence on the associations between major plant-based food groups and cardiovascular disease (CVD), the biological plausibility of the proposed mechanisms, certainty-of-evidence assessments, and recurrent methodological limitations. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for English-language publications from 2020 to July 2026, with earlier studies included when ev…

- Aged polystyrene nanoplastics induce cardiac developmental toxicity associated with mitochondrial dysfunction in zebrafish larvae. [Journal Article]Comp Biochem Physiol C Toxicol Pharmacol. 2026 Oct 05; :110702. [Online ahead of print]CB
- Environmental aging alters the physicochemical properties of micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) and may modify their biological effects; however, the cardiac developmental toxicity of aged MNPs remains poorly understood. In this study, ultraviolet-aged polystyrene nanoplastics (aged PSNPs) were prepared as a laboratory model of photoaged nanoplastics, and zebrafish embryos were exposed to pristine or aged…

- Cell-type-specific H2O2 elevation reveals distinct redox sensitivity оf hippocampal rhythmic activity. [Journal Article]Free Radic Biol Med. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]FR
- Redox signaling regulates neuronal function, yet how acute cell-specific hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) elevation affects hippocampal network oscillations remains unclear. Using a chemogenetic approach in mouse hippocampal slices and in vivo, we induced controlled intracellular H2O2 production selectively in pyramidal cells or interneurons and examined the effects on sharp-wave ripples (SPW-Rs) and gam…

- Bioresource amendment promotes early mineralization and nitrification recovery in ammonium-rich rare earth tailings. [Journal Article]Bioresour Technol. 2026 Oct 05; :136014. [Online ahead of print]BT
- Rare earth tailings soil retains high residual NH4+-N after in-situ leaching with ammonium sulfate, creating coupled risks of nitrogen loss and poor revegetation. The substrate and microbial pathways that reopen ammonia oxidation and mediate nitrification restart in this ammonium rich rare earth tailings soil remain unclear. To address this gap, a microcosm incubation over time compared an unamen…

- Heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalography (EEG) are reflective of cardiac autonomic modulation/emotional regulation and cortical brain activity/psychopathology, respectively. This study aimed to determine the key HRV/prefrontal EEG classifiers of healthy controls (HC) versus patients with psychiatric disorders (PT) and to identify the subtypes of these features. - Abnormal interoception may be a hallmark of medically-unexplained symptoms (MUS), although its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated whether MUS are associated with enhanced interoceptive learning, potentially facilitated by post-learning stress. From 177 volunteers providing self-reports on MUS, 22 individuals were recruited from the upper and 26 from the lower quartile (high/HSR…
