Epidemiological studies have shown that consumption of plant-based foods is associated with reduced risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This protective effect is partially attributed to their unique phenolic acid compositions. However, previous studies have substantially underestimated the phenolic acid contents in plant foods, as conventional quantification methods primarily detect soluble free phenolic acids, while neglecting their soluble conjugated and insoluble-bound forms. This study investigated the profiles of eight phenolic acids in soluble free, soluble conjugated, and insoluble-bound forms across 322 plant foods, and further explored their associations with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among 719 patients with coronary artery disease. The contents and ratios of phenolic acids in the three forms varied substantially across all tested food items. Salsify had the highest total phenolic acid content, 21818-fold higher than that of cucumber with the lowest level. Soluble conjugated and insoluble-bound forms predominated the phenolic acid profiles in cereals, whereas fruits were primarily rich in the soluble free form. Over a 9.33-year follow-up period, 105 cardiovascular deaths and 154 all-cause deaths were recorded. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that higher dietary intakes of total soluble free phenolic acids and gallic acid in soluble free or soluble conjugated forms were associated with increased risks of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, whereas no significant associations were observed for total phenolic acids, or total soluble conjugated and total insoluble-bound phenolic acids. Collectively, this study provides a comprehensive food phenolic acid database, highlighting the value of distinguishing the effects of different phenolic acid forms on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

This study presents an anatomical examination of fruits (cypselas) from 27 Tragopogon taxa, 14 of which are endemic to Türkiye. Mature outer cypselas, collected in the field or from herbarium specimens, were sectioned at the median region of the cypsela body, stained with safranin-fast green, and mounted in entellan to prepare permanent slides. The dendrogram derived from fruit anatomical data was generally congruent with the traditional classification; however, the examined taxa cannot be reliably identified solely on the basis of fruit anatomy, although these characters help to distinguish some closely related taxa. Principal component analysis based on 13 anatomical characters revealed that the widest and narrowest parts of the cypsela, including the primary ribs in the cross-section, and the pericarp width in the primary rib regions, were the most informative features for distinguishing the investigated Tragopogon taxa. Furthermore, discriminant analysis with leave-one-out cross-validation correctly classified most of the taxa into the four predefined fruit types, yielding an overall classification accuracy of 88.89%, suggesting that anatomical data generally support the informal groups initially defined by fruit characters and indicating substantial agreement between the two datasets.

Nudging is a popular behavior change technique but the conditions for its effectiveness have not been researched extensively. The current study aimed to test whether the effectiveness of nudging is limited to certain characteristics of the nudged product by focusing on a specific product (salsify soup) within a broader category (soups). Two parallel studies were conducted in two sandwich restaurants in a university setting at which a default-name nudge ("suggestion of the chef") and a tasting nudge were implemented aimed at increasing the choice for salsify soup using a non-randomized study design during 10 and 12 measurement days. The beta-regression model showed that the default-name nudge increased the proportion of customers that choose the salsify soup during intervention days compared to non-intervention days, p < .001, OR: 1.70. The tasting nudge also increased the proportion of customers that choose the salsify soup from baseline to intervention, p < .001, OR: 6.17 and from baseline to post-intervention, p < .01, OR: 1.87, and decreased from intervention to post-intervention, p < .001, OR: 0.30. Both nudges did not increase the choice for the overall category of soups. The results show that certain types of nudges are able to increase specific products of a category without increasing overall choice of a category in contrast to previous findings.

Tragopogon porrifolius, commonly referred to as white salsify, is an edible herb used in folk medicine to treat cancer. Samples of Tragopogon porrifolius plant grown wild in Palestine were extracted with different solvents: water, 80% ethanol, and 100% ethanol. The extracts were analyzed for their total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity (AA). Four different antioxidant assays were used to evaluate AA of the extracts: two measures the reducing power of the extracts (ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and cupric reducing antioxidant power (CUPRAC)), while two other assays measure the scavenging ability of the extracts (2,2-azino-di-(3-ethylbenzothialozine-sulphonic acid (ABTS)) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)). Anticancer activity of the plant extracts were also tested on HOS and KHOS osteosarcoma cell lines. The results revealed that the polarity of the extraction solvent affects the TPC, TFC, and AA. It was found that both TPC and AA are highest for plant extracted with 80% ethanol, followed by water, and finally with 100% ethanol. TFC however was the highest in the following order: 80% ethanol > 100% ethanol > water. The plant extracts showed anticancer activities against KHOS cancer cell lines; they reduced total cell count and induced cell death in a drastic manner.

Tragopogon porrifolius (Asteraceae), commonly referred to as white salsify, is an edible herb used in Lebanese folk medicine to treat cancer and liver dysfunction. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant activity of Tragopogon porrifolius methanolic extract, both in vitro and in vivo, in addition to its hepatoprotective and anticancer activities. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured and found to be 37.0 ± 1.40 mg GAE/g and 16.6 ± 0.42 mg QE/g dry weight, respectively. In vitro antioxidant assays revealed an FRAP value of 659 ± 13.8 µmol Fe(2+)/g of extract and DPPH IC50 value 15.2 µg/mL. In rats subjected to CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity, significant increase in CAT, SOD, and GST levels was detected. The highest dose of the extract (250 mg/kg) recorded a fold increase of 1.68 for SOD, 2.49 for GST, and 3.2 for CAT. The extract also showed substantial decrease in AST (57%), ALT (56%), and LDH (65%) levels. Additionally, the extract caused a dose-dependent decrease in cell viability and proliferation. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of T. porrifolius displayed a relatively high antioxidant activity both in vitro and in vivo as well as hepatoprotective potential against liver toxicity in rats and anticancer effect on MDA-MB-231 and Caco-2 cells.

Scorzonera hispanica commonly known as black salsify is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. The subaerial parts of black salsify are cultivated in Central and Southern Europe as a vegetable. There are only few reports on the chemical composition of S.hispanica. The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical composition of subaerial and aerial parts of this species. In total, twelve compounds were isolated and identified with spectroscopic methods, including a series of seven rare sesquiterpenoids - five bisabolane and two curcumenal derivatives. Furthermore, a fully validated HPLC-DAD-CAD method for the quantification of phenolic compounds of S. hispanica was developed. The cytotoxicities of lignan [(-)-syringaresinol (1)] and bisabolane derivatives from S. hispanica against several cancer cell lines were studied. (-)-Syringaresinol was the only compound active against myeloma cell lines and was also active against colon cancer cell lines. However, this lignan was also found to be cytotoxic for normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Two bisabolane derivatives were active against colon cancer cell lines and may be interesting as lead structures for the development of new anti-colon cancer agents.

Children's vegetable intake is below the recommended amounts. No studies to date have tested the relevance of using salt or spices to increase children's vegetable acceptance. Our objective was to compare the effect of repeated exposure (RE) and of flavor-flavor learning (FFL) on toddlers' acceptance of a non-familiar vegetable. Two unconditioned stimuli were used: salt and a salt-associated spice. Toddlers attending six nurseries were assigned to 3 groups in a between subject design. Groups were exposed 8 times to a basic salsify puree (0.2% salt w/w; RE group; n = 47), a salty salsify puree (0.5% salt w/w; FFL-Salt group; n = 54) or a spiced salsify puree (0.2% salt and 0.02% nutmeg w/w; FFL-Nutmeg group; n = 50). Acceptance (intake and liking) of the target vegetable (basic salsify puree) and of a control vegetable (carrot puree) was evaluated at pre-exposure, at each exposure of the learning period, at post-exposure, and at 1, 3 and 6 months after exposure. In all groups, intake of the target vegetable increased from pre- to post-exposure. This increase was significantly higher in the RE group (64 ± 11 g) than in the FFL-Salt group (23 ± 11 g) and marginally higher than in the FFL-Nutmeg group (36 ± 11 g). No difference between groups was observed on the increase in liking of the target vegetable from pre- to post-exposure. The increase of the target vegetable intake was still observed after 6 months for all groups. Thus, repeated exposure appears to be the simplest choice to increase vegetable intake on the short and long term in toddlers.

Tragopogon porrifolius (white salsify) is an edible plant commonly used in folk medicine in Lebanon and neighbouring countries. This study investigates the effect of the aqueous extract of the aerial part of T. porrifolius on lipemia and appetite regulation using a rat model. Food intake, abdominal fat percentage, blood lipid profile, liver weight and liver enzymes were assessed following 4 weeks of extract intake via drinking water (50, 100, or 250 mg/kg body weight) in standard high-carbohydrate and high-fat dietary conditions. In a separate study, the short term effect of a preload of T. porrifolius extract on food intake was evaluated. Results showed that consumption of the plant extract for a period of four weeks resulted in a marked improvement of the lipid profile (triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol). Body weight, food intake and intra-abdominal fat were also lower in animals given the plant extract (100 and 250 mg/kg). In addition, T. porrifolius extract preload produced a dose dependent decrease in food intake observed over 24h. The intake of T. porrifolius aqueous extract therefore improved lipemia and increased satiety in rats with no visible adverse effects.

Two analytical procedures were applied, HS-SPME and SDE, coupled to GC-MS to analyse the volatile composition of white salsify. More than 80 of volatile compounds which belonged to distinct chemical families were analysed. SDE led to the identification of mainly high molecular weight sesquiterpenes, acids and esters. Given that SDE involves high temperatures, heat-sensitive compounds may undergo chemical alteration or artefacts may appear. Results obtained show that SPME was useful for the analysis of alcohols and hydrocarbons of low molecular weight and high volatility that are involved in the characteristic volatile profile of salsify and its sensory perception.

Experimental studies have shown that phenolic compounds have antiproliferative and tumour arresting effects. The aim of this original study was to investigate the content of phenolic compounds (PhC) in flowers of Allium schoenoprasum (chive), Tragopogon pratensis (meadow salsify) and Rumex acetosa (common sorrel) and their effect on proliferation of HaCaT cells. Antiproliferative effects were evaluated in vitro using the following concentrations of phenolic compounds in cultivation medium: 100, 75, 50 and 25 µg/mL. Phenolic composition was also determined by HPLC. The results indicate that even low concentrations of these flowers' phenolic compounds inhibited cell proliferation significantly and the possible use of the studied herb's flowers as sources of active phenolic compounds for human nutrition.

Tragopogon porrifolius L. grows as a vegetable in southern Italy and all parts of it are edible. In the present study the volatile components of the aerial part are described. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of 38 components in all. On the whole, the volatile fraction was constituted mainly by carbonylic compounds (24.6%), phenols (21.5%) and fatty acids and esters (19.7%). The most abundant compounds were 4-vinyl guaiacol (19.0%), hexadecanoic acid (17.9%), hexahydrofarnesylacetone (15.8%) and hentriacontane (10.7%).

An obviously unhealthy plant identified as Tragopogon mirus Ownbey (remarkable goatsbeard) was sent for diagnosis to the Division of Plant Industry (DPI), Gainesville, FL in May of 2008. T. mirus is a recently formed allotetraploid that has T. dubius Scop. and T. porrifolius L. (goatsbeard or salsify) as parents. The parents (family Asteraceae) are diploid and originate from Eurasia. They were introduced to the northwest United States in the early 1900s. The allotetraploid T. mirus, which does not occur in Eurasia, was discovered in 1949 and named in 1950. It has been found in the northwest states of Washington and Idaho. It has also been found in Arizona (4). The plant sent to the DPI was grown in a greenhouse for research purposes at the Botany Department of the University of Florida (Alachua County). Symptoms exhibited on the leaves included mottling, chlorotic and necrotic spots, and mild distortion. Epidermal leaf strips from a mottled leaf were stained with the Orange-Green protein stain and Azure A nucleic acid stain (1). With a light microscope, granular inclusions typical for Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) (1) were seen in leaf strips from both stains. The remainder of the leaf was ground in buffer and tested serologically for TSWV by TSWV-specific ImmunoStrips (Agdia, Elkhart, IN). The ImmunoStrip was positive for the presence of TSWV. This test was confirmed by double-antibody sandwich-ELISA using antiserum and conjugate for TSWV (Agdia). Further serological testing of other Tragopogon species with similar symptoms growing in the same greenhouse revealed that T. miscellus (another recently formed allotetraploid found in the northwestern United States; parents T. dubius and T. pratensis), T. dubius, T. porrifolius, and T. pratensis were also infected with TSWV. Total RNA was extracted from symptomatic leaves of T. mirus, T. dubius, T. porrifolius, and T. miscellus. Reverse transcription-PCR was performed with universal tospovirus primers BR60 and BR65 that amplify part of the nucleocapsid protein gene (2). Target amplicons of 454 bp were produced for all four samples. The PCR product from T. porrifolius was cloned and sequenced. The resulting sequence (GenBank Accession No. FJ655913) shows high homology, 98%, to several isolates of the Tomato spotted wilt virus deposited in the GenBank (Accession Nos. AY870391, AY744477, and AF020659). T. porrifolius has been reported to be naturally infected with TSWV in Italy (3); however, to our knowledge, this is the first report of this virus in the allotetraploids T. mirus and T. miscellus and in the diploids T. dubius and T. pratensis. ABSTRACT The vertical distribution of Pratylenchus penetrans was monitored in four fields cropped with maize, black salsify, carrot, or potato. Soil samples were collected at 21-day intervals from May 2002 until April 2003 from five plots (2 x 5 m(2)) per field. Per plot, 15 cores were taken to a depth of 70 cm and split into seven segments of 10 cm each. Within the plots, segments from corresponding depths were pooled. After mixing, 200-g subsamples were taken and nematodes were extracted by zonal centrifugation from the root fraction and the mineral soil fraction separately. In most crops, the root fraction contained more than 50% of the total number of P. penetrans. Because the ratio between the numbers of nematodes in the root fraction and mineral soil fraction changes during the growing season, numbers of P. penetrans found in the mineral soil fraction cannot be used to estimate the total number in the soil. Therefore, both fractions have to be processed to obtain a reliable estimate of the density. No nematodes were recovered below 50 cm soil depth, except in the maize field where nematodes were found at 70 cm. The optimum sampling depth for maize, black salsify, carrot, and potato was 45, 25, 25, and 35 cm, respectively. The percentage of nematodes per soil layer was independent of the sampling date, indicating that a defined optimum sampling depth will be applicable throughout all seasons. The cumulative vertical distribution, modeled with a logistic equation, can be used to estimate the sampling error when samples are collected at different depths.
