- Acute Renal and Hemodynamic Risk in Young Adults With Sickle-Cell Trait and Disease: A Propensity-Score-Matched Analysis. [Journal Article]Cureus. 2026 Oct; 18(10):e117299.C
- Background Sickle-cell trait (SCT) is historically regarded as a benign carrier state, although emerging evidence from athletic and military cohorts suggests increased vulnerability during physiological stress. In this study, we aimed to identify the incidence of acute renal and hemodynamic complications in adolescent and younger adult patients with SCT or sickle-cell disease (SCD) and compare th…

- Prenatal hemoglobinopathy screening practices: Areas for improvement. [Journal Article]J Natl Med Assoc. 2026 Oct 23; 119(1):101131. [Online ahead of print]JN
- CONCLUSIONS: This survey highlights differences in prenatal hemoglobinopathy screening practices based on provider type. This can lead to variations in prenatal guidance, diagnostic procedures, informed decision-making and knowledge of families referred to pediatric hematology clinics. Prenatal providers need to be educated that the use of SICKLEDEX is an inappropriate laboratory screening test since it will not detect all hemoglobinopathies.

- From menarche to menopause: a lifespan perspective on women's health in sickle cell disease. [Journal Article]Front Epidemiol. 2026; 6:1931488.FE
- Sickle cell disease (SCD) has long been associated with high childhood mortality and reduced life expectancy; however, advances in newborn screening, disease-modifying therapies, and comprehensive care have substantially improved survival. As increasing numbers of women with SCD reach midlife, new challenges are emerging that extend beyond the traditional focus on fertility and pregnancy. Despite…

- Guiding principles for modelling cellular transport homeostasis. [Review]Biophys J. 2026 Oct 30. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- Cellular transport homeostasis evolved as a universal strategy linking the dynamic interactions between membrane transport, metabolism and biosynthesis in all cells. The entangled nature of these interactions, together with the effects from additional processes influencing homeostatic variables generate complexities that render intuition an unreliable interpreter and predictor of cell responses o…

- Partial RHD genotypes in genome databases. [Journal Article]Transfusion. 2026 Oct 30. [Online ahead of print]T
- CONCLUSIONS: SNVs and VCO in large genome databases provided partial-RHD GFs in diverse populations. This information will be useful in estimating allele propensities for anti-D formation.

- Fertility and family-building in sickle cell disease: A qualitative analysis of hematologist perspectives. [Journal Article]J Natl Med Assoc. 2026 Oct 30; 118(6):101111. [Online ahead of print]JN
- As survival for people with sickle cell disease (SCD) improves, fertility and family-building have become increasing priorities. This shift is especially important with the broader use of disease-modifying treatments that impact fertility. This qualitative study assessed pediatric hematologists' perspectives and practices regarding adolescents with SCD who may have fertility and family-building c…

- Sickle cell disease (SCD) in India is often linked to the Arab-Indian haplotype, characterized by elevated fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels and a relatively mild phenotype. However, data on genetic heterogeneity and genotype-phenotype correlations in Eastern India remain limited. This hospital-based cross-sectional study at Nilratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, West Bengal, included…

- Knowledge and Practices Towards Premarital Sickle Cell Trait Testing Among Young Adults in Eastern Uganda. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Young adults attending OPD at SRRH showed moderate awareness of SCTT but low uptake. Although most understood that SCD is inherited and incurable, many lacked knowledge of the risk-informing role of premarital testing. Barriers including limited access, fear of positive results, and relationship concerns contributed to low uptake, revealing a knowledge-practice gap that calls for targeted interventions in Eastern Uganda.

- Albuminuria and associated renal and hemodynamic factors in adults with steady-state sickle cell disease: a multicenter study with measured GFR. [Multicenter Study]
- CONCLUSIONS: Albuminuria was common in this cohort of adults with steady-state SCD and was associated with markers of hemolysis, tubular injury, recent vaso-occlusive events, and systemic hemodynamic alterations. These findings suggest that albuminuria may be associated with a broader pattern of cardiorenal vulnerability in adults with SCD.

- Sickle cell disease-specific barriers to in vivo hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy. [Journal Article]Semin Hematol. 2026 Sep 29. [Online ahead of print]SH
- Gene therapy for individuals living with sickle cell disease is a transformative therapy, ameliorating many of its severe symptoms. Nevertheless, ex vivo administration of gene therapy coupled with sickle cell disease specific obstacles, complicate and limit widespread adoption. In this review, we discuss current strategies to develop in vivo gene delivery technologies, highlighting different app…

- L-Glutamine for Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease: Pharmacology, Mechanism of Action, Safety and Efficacy. [Review]In Vivo. 2026 Nov-Dec; 40(6):3253-3261.V
- CONCLUSIONS: Oral L-Gln is an effective SCD-modifying therapy for patients with sickle cell disease 5 years and older. Gastrointestinal adverse effects, including abdominal pain and constipation, are reported. PK supports twice daily regimen, and PD suggests that anti-oxidative effect is the dominant MOA. Cost reductions may result in wider use of L-Gln.
