  • Aeroplanes also fly: Analytic functionalism and the possibility of machine consciousness. [Journal Article]
Behav Brain Sci. 2026 Sep 17; 49:e362.Shevlin HBB
  • Seth mounts a rich and persuasive case that human consciousness cannot be understood without life's distinctive machinery - autopoiesis, allostatic control, predictive processing under the free-energy principle, and substrate-entangled dynamics. I agree that this undercuts the expectation that humanlike consciousness will "come for free" with more intelligent machines. However, we should also be …
  • Procedure-Specific Postoperative Drainage Strategy in Transforaminal Full-Endoscopic Spine Surgery: A Quantitative Evaluation of Drain Output and Endoscopic Bleeding Findings. [Journal Article]
    Int J Spine Surg. 2026 Sep 11; 20(4):656-663.Nagao Y, Kitahara T, … Sairyo KIJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: Bleeding risk in TF-FESS is strongly procedure dependent. Drain-free management was implemented only in a selected low-risk subgroup after a policy change; given the small sample size and the low baseline incidence of symptomatic hematoma, this cohort is not powered to assess safety outcomes, and drain-free observations should be interpreted as descriptive feasibility data. Postoperative drainage should be considered for advanced procedures involving epidural venous plexus manipulation and/or extensive cancellous bone exposure (FEVF/TELUL/pars crisscross). Given the nonrandomized, procedure-dependent drain policy, these findings are hypothesis generating.
  • Transfer-Stacked and Pre-Tunable Bilayer Photoresist for High-Yield Dry Lift-off and Multiscale Patterning. [Journal Article]
    Small Methods. 2026 Sep 01; :e71008. [Online ahead of print]Wang Q, Bi X, … Duan HSM
  • Photolithography, a cornerstone of semiconductor manufacturing, faces persistent challenges in lift-off processes, particularly regarding solvent usage, sidewall adhesion, and limited pattern fidelity. While dry lift-off and bilayer resist schemes provide promising alternatives, conventional approaches often rely on multiple materials and exhibit uncontrollable undercut profiles. Here, we report …
  • High-Resolution Patterning of Perovskite Quantum Dots and PEDOT:PSS Using a Solvent-Free Dry Lift-Off. [Journal Article]

  • As a critical step in micro- and nanofabrication, the resist lift-off process plays an important role in enabling pattern transfer and device integration. The challenge lies in achieving resist removal without compromising the integrity or functionality of underlying materials. Conventional wet lift-off approaches rely on hazardous solvents and high energy consumption. They also suffer from solve…
  • Measurement Error Models Enable Accurate Correlation of Nanoscale Properties and Structures. [Journal Article]
ACS Nano. 2026 Aug 18; 20(32):22381-22390.Pintar AL, Madison AC, … Stavis SMAN
  • Measurement errors can catastrophically bias parameter estimates in models to correlate nanoscale properties and structures, undercutting a foundation of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In a general solution to this latent problem, we derive a method-of-moments correction for least-squares estimates of correlative model parameters. Our correction applies to many relations of dependent and indepen…
  • Development of Design-Phase Digital Twin for Structural Optimization of a Biomedical Device. [Journal Article]
Int J Numer Method Biomed Eng. 2026 Aug; 42(8):e70203.Pinol TR, Prentice LH, … Pang TYIJ
  • Digital twins have transformed design and verification workflows in engineering, yet their adoption within medical device development remains limited. Conventional build-and-test approaches restrict design space exploration and often delay identification of mechanically critical risks. This paper presents a case study on the development of a calibrated, design-phase behavioral digital twin for a …
