- Comparative Performance of Preoperative Diabetes-Remission Scores Following Metabolic Bariatric Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study in a Malaysian Population. [Journal Article]Obes Surg. 2026 Oct 02. [Online ahead of print]OS
- CONCLUSIONS: In a predominantly Malay, sleeve-predominant cohort, all three scores predicted remission. Adding diabetes duration alone (DiaRem2) did not improve on the original DiaRem, whereas Ad-DiaRem, which also incorporates treatment burden and re-weighted penalties, discriminated best. Because the medication components were reconstructed retrospectively, and because the study was not powered to detect modest differences between scores, these comparisons require confirmation.

- PTSD Is Associated With Severity of Upper GI Symptoms in Patients With Gastroparesis. [Journal Article]Neurogastroenterol Motil. 2026 Oct; 38(10):e70449.NM
- CONCLUSIONS: PTSD was not associated with greater delay in gastric emptying or impairments in gastric accommodation but was associated with more severe symptoms and psychosocial impairment. Further exploration should assess the effects of undergoing trauma-focused therapy in improving symptoms.

- Gastrointestinal ultrasound in systemic sclerosis: A scoping review of current evidence. [Review]Eur J Intern Med. 2026 Oct 01; :107221. [Online ahead of print]EJ
- Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease frequently associated with gastrointestinal (GI) involvement. GI manifestations are heterogeneous, may occur throughout the entire tract from the very early stages of the disease and are often associated with a significant burden of symptoms and complications, leading to high morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis often remains …

- The Reported Prevalence of Micronutrient Deficiency after Metabolic Bariatric Surgery and Adherence to British Obesity and Metabolic Specialist Society Nutritional Guidelines: A Multicentre Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with available biochemical testing, micronutrient deficiencies were frequently observed during the first year after MBS. The observed frequency of low zinc and selenium amongst tested patients warrants further prospective investigation to explore clinical implications and to evaluate the earlier and more systematic monitoring of trace minerals after MBS. Inconsistencies in micronutrient blood monitoring and substantial missing postoperative data may suggest that the BOMSS nutritional monitoring guidelines are not being fully implemented in clinical practice across England, limiting the availability of real-world postoperative micronutrient data.

- Intentional nail ingestion with caecal impaction: colonoscopic removal using a cap-assisted technique. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Sep 30; 19(9).BC
- Most foreign body ingestions in adult patients pass spontaneously while sharp objects often require endoscopic intervention. Endoscopic foreign body removals are usually performed in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, with few reports involving the lower GI tract. We present a case of a woman with recurrent nail ingestion who presented with abdominal pain after swallowing multiple nails. Init…

- Histologic Features and Clinical Outcomes of Lean Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease. [Journal Article]JAMA. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JAMA
- CONCLUSIONS: Lean MASLD represents a distinct phenotype with milder histologic disease but similar clinical outcomes compared with overweight/obese MASLD. Fibrosis severity, rather than body composition, was associated with prognosis and LSM was reliable in lean individuals.

- Utility of Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Pediatric Gastrointestinal Disorders in Bangladesh: A Retrospective Study. [Journal Article]Mymensingh Med J. 2026 Oct; 35(4):1249-1255.MM
- Over the last few years upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has been proven to be an effective diagnostic and therapeutic tool for various gastrointestinal diseases in children. This retrospective study was done in a tertiary care center of Bangladesh for one year to assess the indications of upper GI endoscopy including the diagnostic and therapeutic yields for various gastrointestinal disorde…
- Bariatric Surgery, Medical Weight Loss, and the Upper Aerodigestive Tract. [Review]Otolaryngol Clin North Am. 2026 Sep 29. [Online ahead of print]OC
- Obesity and intentional weight loss increasingly influence otolaryngologic disease through mechanical, metabolic, inflammatory, gastrointestinal, and regional soft-tissue effects. This review examines how bariatric surgery and contemporary medical weight-loss therapies affect the upper aerodigestive tract. Evidence is strongest for obstructive sleep apnea, in which substantial weight reduction im…

- Efficacy and safety of remimazolam sedation for gastrointestinal endoscopy in elderly versus non-elderly patients. [Journal Article]Digestion. 2026 Sep 29; :1. [Online ahead of print]D
- CONCLUSIONS: Remimazolam provided effective sedation for GI endoscopy, and elderly patients received a lower total dose under the study protocol. Although these adverse events were mild and resolved with minimal intervention, their occurrence in elderly patients warrants careful monitoring. These exploratory findings warrant confirmation in adequately powered prospective studies.

- Achieving physiologic distensibility targets frequently requires modification of standard cruroplasty during anti-reflux surgery. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Objective physiologic calibration with EndoFLIP frequently altered standard hiatal closure technique, even in experienced hands. The cruroplasty, rather than the fundoplication, accounted for the majority of intraoperative change in EGJ distensibility and was the principal modifiable determinant of final physiology. Subjective calibration may inadequately predict final EGJ distensibility, and physiologic measurement may be necessary to optimize anti-reflux repair.

- Weight-Loss and Metabolic Outcomes of a Swallowable Fluid-Filled versus an Adjustable Intragastric Balloon in Adults with Overweight or Obesity: A Retrospective Single-Center Study with 12-Month Weight Outcomes. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Both IGBs produced meaningful weight loss and metabolic improvement, but comparison between them is strongly time-dependent: the swallowable balloon's short-term advantage per month of dwell was not maintained at 12 months. Incomplete adjustable-group follow-up means the device comparison should be read as an upper bound. Metabolic improvement was similar between devices and not proportional to weight loss.

- Delayed gastric conduit emptying (DGCE) is a debilitating functional complication after esophagectomy. Because of a lack of large-scale outcome data, this project evaluated surgical revisional strategies for refractory DGCE within a recently published mechanism-informed classification system. REvisional Surgery for delayed gasTRic conduit emptying (RESTORANT) was a multicentric, retrospective coh…

- Long-term Trends in Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Ischemic Outcomes after Myocardial Infarction. [Journal Article]Eur J Prev Cardiol. 2026 Sep 26. [Online ahead of print]EJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Bleeding hospitalizations after MI increased until 2013-14, with UGIB the most common source, while ischemic outcomes declined. These opposing trends were associated with the adoption of invasive management and intensified antithrombotic therapy. Routine tailoring of antithrombotic intensity and systematic gastroprotective measures should be considered in post-MI care.
