- Hemimegalencephaly With Diffuse Cortical Malformation in a Child With Drug-Resistant Infantile Epileptic Spasms: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Sep; 18(9):e115613.C
- Hemimegalencephaly is a rare congenital malformation of cortical development involving hamartomatous overgrowth of part or all of one cerebral hemisphere. It commonly presents during infancy with early-onset, drug-resistant seizures, developmental impairment, and contralateral motor deficits. Infantile epileptic spasms may be an initial manifestation. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is cen…

- Case Report: Massive sustained-release valproate overdose with prolonged gastric tablet retention and partial pharmacobezoar formation managed by endoscopic removal and delayed extracorporeal therapy. [Case Reports]Front Pharmacol. 2026; 17:1923807.FP
- CONCLUSIONS: Massive sustained-release valproate overdose may cause prolonged gastric retention of intact and partially aggregated tablets, thereby sustaining systemic toxicity. In selected patients, endoscopic tablet removal may provide toxicological source control, while extracorporeal treatment may remain beneficial even when its initiation is delayed. The respective contributions of endoscopy, meropenem exposure, spontaneous elimination, and extracorporeal treatment cannot be separated in this single case.

- Atypical late neurosyphilis presenting as status epilepticus: diagnostic and screening implications. [Journal Article]Acta Clin Belg. 2026 Oct 01; :1-7. [Online ahead of print]AC
- CONCLUSIONS: Neurosyphilis is not intrinsically difficult to diagnose, provided it is considered, including outside the classically recognised risk groups such as men who have sex with men.

- Light-Induced Double Drug Release with Improved Efficiency in Micelles. [Journal Article]ACS Appl Bio Mater. 2026 Oct 01. [Online ahead of print]AA
- Light-responsive photocages are attractive tools for controlled drug delivery, yet achieving efficient photo-release in aqueous media remains challenging. Herein, a symmetrical BODIPY bis(oxime ester) derivative (BD-diOE) was developed for visible-light-triggered release of valproic acid (VPA). The study confirmed a sequential photo-uncaging process resulting in the release of two equivalents of …

- When seizure control comes at a cost: valproic acid-induced necrotising pancreatitis in a patient receiving antiepileptic polypharmacy. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Sep 30; 19(9).BC
- We present a case of a man in his late 20s with psychiatric and metabolic comorbidities who developed acute necrotising pancreatitis in the setting of antiepileptic polypharmacy, including valproic acid. The patient presented with nausea, vomiting and progressive lethargy without the classic abdominal pain of pancreatitis, which contributed to diagnostic delay. He rapidly deteriorated into multio…

- Beyond symptom resolution: Clinical burden and immunometabolic correlates of functional remission after mania. [Journal Article]J Affect Disord. 2026 Sep 30; :122578. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Functional remission in BD appears to be primarily determined by illness burden, particularly indicators of illness chronicity. Among immunometabolic factors examined, PLR showed the most consistent association with remission outcomes. These findings suggest that immunometabolic markers may contribute to our understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying functional recovery, although their added predictive value beyond clinical variables appears to be limited.

- Sleep macro-architecture in sleep-deprivation-sensitive and sleep-deprivation-insensitive juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: A polysomnographic study. [Journal Article]Epilepsia. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]E
- CONCLUSIONS: SD-sensitive JME shows a light NREM-dominant sleep profile with decreased N3 vs SD-insensitive patients along with decreased REM when compared to controls. These differences are associative (SD sensitivity was self-reported; no experimental challenge). No polysomnography parameter independently predicted SD sensitivity. Prospective studies with controlled SD challenge are required to determine if lighter sleep is a vulnerability factor or a parallel correlate of seizure risk.

- Epilepsy in pregnancy is common, but it remains a major risk factor for maternal morbidity and mortality. Over the last decade, neurological causes have remained in the top three indirect causes of maternal death in the UK. National reports, including the recent maternity care bundle, have emphasised the importance of preconceptual counselling to optimise maternal health and reduce complications …

- Harnessing Data Warehousing for Precision in Off-Label Prescription Detection in Psychiatry (PSYHAMM): Retrospective Proof-of-Concept Evaluation Study. [Journal Article]JMIR Form Res. 2026 Sep 29; 10:e71516.JF
- CONCLUSIONS: As a single-center, proof-of-concept evaluation, the PSYHAMM project demonstrates the potential of automated systems to support the identification of off-label prescriptions in psychiatry as a sensitive prescreening step requiring expert validation. The relatively high false-positive rate was driven mainly by temporal discrepancies (drugs prescribed before the index stay, discontinued during the stay, or only hypothetically mentioned) rather than by semantic errors. Future research should focus on integrating real-time data analytics and expanding to multiple institutions to improve the utility of off-label detection systems.
