- Affective Computing Approaches in Child-Robot Interaction: A Systematic Review and Taxonomy. [Systematic Review]Sensors (Basel). 2026 Sep 09; 26(18).S
- Affective computing has become increasingly relevant in child-robot interaction (CRI), particularly in social robotics, emotion recognition, engagement assessment, and autism-related interventions. This systematic review with a critical and integrative synthesis analyzes 105 included studies to examine how affect is sensed, represented, processed, expressed, and evaluated in CRI. The literature s…

- Characterizing the Prevalence of Co-Occurring Neurodevelopmental Conditions and Associations With the Timing of Diagnosis in Autism in Medicaid Claims Data. [Journal Article]Autism Res. 2026 Sep 30; :e70365. [Online ahead of print]AR
- Autism commonly co-occurs with other neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs), although diagnostic trajectories of an autism diagnosis relative to other NDCs are not well understood. We sought to examine the prevalence of NDCs within autistic children and how co-occurrence is associated with the timing of autism diagnoses. All children born between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015, and who had c…

- Measurement Properties of Autism Spectrum Disorder Screening Instruments: A Systematic Review. [Journal Article]Curr Pediatr Rev. 2026 Sep 26. [Online ahead of print]CP
- CONCLUSIONS: Each ASD screening tool assesses specific skills and various aspects of the disorder; careful evaluation is needed to select the appropriate tool. However, the results of this study highlighted the need for additional validation studies for all the measures.

- The role of neuroinflammation in the connections between autism spectrum disorder and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: A review. [Review]J Alzheimers Dis. 2026 Sep 30; :13872877261491809. [Online ahead of print]JA
- Recent evidence suggests a link between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and early-onset Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD), yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. This narrative review investigates whether early management of ASD may reduce the risk of developing AD/ADRD by targeting shared biological pathways. A literature search was conducted us…

- Investigating the associations between neurodevelopmental and psychiatric genetic liability and adverse social and functional outcomes across childhood, adolescence and young-adulthood. [Journal Article]Mol Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]MP
- Neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions often originate in youth and can lead to adverse social and functional outcomes. It is unclear whether these associations are driven by genetic liability to these conditions, with possible developmental differences. We examined multivariable associations between polygenic scores (PGS) for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectru…

- Altered semantic prediction error processing with increasing schizotypal and autistic traits. [Journal Article]Transl Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 30; 16(1).TP
- Predictive processing has been proposed as a framework for symptom development in autism (ASD) and schizophrenia (SSD) spectrum disorders, with ASD being associated with an overweighting of (low-level) sensory evidence whereas SSD is characterized by an overweighting of (high-level) prior beliefs, both resulting in altered prediction error processing. This study investigated these hypotheses and …

- Brain network localization of gray matter alterations and executive dysfunction in pediatric ADHD. [Journal Article]J Child Psychol Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Using a large pediatric normative connectome, coordinate-informed FCNM mapped ADHD-related abnormalities onto partially overlapping DMN and VAN architectures, providing a reproducible framework for understanding distributed abnormalities in ADHD and identifying biologically defined targets for neuromodulation and early intervention.

- Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Children Born After Fresh Versus Frozen Embryo Transfer. [Journal Article]J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide reassurance regarding the long-term neurodevelopmental safety of frozen ET and ICSI compared to fresh ET and conventional IVF, respectively. The modestly increased risks of ADHD and ASD observed in all assisted reproductive technology (ART)-conceived children warrant further investigation to disentangle the effects of the ART procedures themselves from the underlying parental subfertility. Nevertheless, the minimal absolute risk increase is clinically small and remains reassuring for patients and providers considering ART.

- This review synthesizes recent genetic, molecular, cellular and preclinical evidence on CNTNAP2 function and dysfunction across the neurodevelopmental spectrum from highly penetrant recessive disorder to common autism spectrum disorder risk variation with the focus on human-specific expression patterns, mechanistic convergence on excitatory/inhibitory imbalance and potential translational targets…

- Autism-associated SCN2A deficiency disrupts cortico-striatal circuitry in human brain assembloids. [Journal Article]Neuron. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]N
- Profound autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is frequently attributable to single-gene mutations, with SCN2A, encoding the voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.2, among the most penetrant. Cortico-striatal circuitry is a key node implicated in ASD, yet how SCN2A deficiency alters human neural circuits remains unclear. Using a human cortico-striatal assembloid model, we show that autism-causing heterozygo…

- Purinergic receptor activation rectifies autism-associated endothelial dysfunction. [Journal Article]Neuron. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]N
- Recent evidence in a 16p11.2 deletion mouse model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) revealed brain endothelial abnormalities postnatally, but the endothelial alterations eliciting these changes remained unknown. Using 14-day-old and adult 16p11.2-deficient and wild-type male mice, we now show that the 16p11.2 deletion causes a bioenergetic failure selectively in endothelial cells (ECs) with reduc…

- Hidden causal inference delineates dynamic lncRNA regulation in autism spectrum disorder. [Journal Article]Brief Bioinform. 2026 Sep 01; 27(5).BB
- Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly implicated in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet their dynamic regulatory roles remain poorly characterized. Conventional static causal inference methods are limited in capturing the dynamic interplay of lncRNAs across diverse brain biological contexts. Here, we develop DCRNet (Dynamic Causal Regulation Network), a hidden causality-based framework …

- South African Speech-Language Therapists' Perceptions of Youth Offenders and Youth Offender Rehabilitation. [Journal Article]Int J Lang Commun Disord. 2026 Nov-Dec; 61(6):e70345.IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Participants generally perceived youth offenders and their potential for rehabilitation positively. They also demonstrated good insight into potential barriers and societal attitudes that affect youth offender rehabilitation and reintegration. Additionally, participants without prior training to work with youth offenders were more likely to attribute criminal behaviour to personal and biological factors than participants who had received such training. Further research exploring HCPs' perceptions of youth offenders across different disciplines and contexts is recommended.
