Background/Objectives: Knee injuries and overuse-related disorders are common among athletes participating in jumping sports such as handball and basketball. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography is increasingly used for the assessment of knee pathology; however, evidence regarding the prevalence and clinical relevance of ultrasonographic abnormalities in young athletes remains limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ultrasonographic knee abnormalities in young male handball and basketball athletes and to examine their association with pain intensity. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between June 2025 and June 2026 and included 69 competitive male athletes (35 handball players and 34 basketball players). All participants underwent bilateral knee ultrasonographic examination using a standardized assessment protocol and completed a questionnaire regarding demographic and training characteristics. Knee pain intensity was evaluated using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Comparisons between sports were performed using χ[2] and t-tests, while associations between participant-level ultrasonographic findings and pain were evaluated using independent-samples t-tests (or Mann-Whitney U tests, as appropriate), with Cohen's d effect sizes and exploratory multivariable linear regression. Sensitivity analyses stratified by sport were additionally performed. Results: Patellar tendinopathy was the most prevalent ultrasonographic abnormality (21.0%), followed by medial meniscal abnormality (15.9%) and infrapatellar bursitis (13.0%). Athletes with patellar tendinopathy, medial meniscal abnormality, or infrapatellar bursitis had significantly higher VAS pain scores than athletes without the corresponding ultrasonographic abnormality. Patellar tendinopathy demonstrated the strongest association with participant-reported pain (VAS: 4.1 ± 1.3; Cohen's d = 1.24; p < 0.001). Handball athletes exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of patellar tendinopathy than basketball athletes (34.3% vs. 11.8%; OR = 3.90, 95% CI: 1.09-13.95; p = 0.027). In multivariable regression analysis adjusted for age, BMI, sport type, previous knee injury, and weekly training volume, patellar tendinopathy (β = 1.34, p < 0.001), medial meniscal abnormality (β = 0.70, p = 0.017), and infrapatellar bursitis (β = 0.54, p = 0.046) remained independently associated with higher pain scores. The regression model explained 39% of the variance in VAS pain scores (R[2] = 0.39). Conclusions: Ultrasonographic knee abnormalities are common among young male handball and basketball athletes and are significantly associated with pain intensity. Because ultrasonography has limited ability to characterize intra-articular pathology, particularly the menisci, the ultrasonographic abnormalities identified in this study should not be interpreted as definitive diagnoses, and MRI remains the reference imaging modality when comprehensive evaluation of intra-articular pathology is clinically indicated. Patellar tendinopathy was the most prevalent ultrasonographic abnormality and was most strongly associated with pain intensity. These findings support the use of musculoskeletal ultrasonography as a complementary imaging modality alongside clinical assessment in the evaluation of symptomatic athletes. However, prospective longitudinal studies are required to determine whether these ultrasonographic abnormalities have prognostic value for future pain, functional limitation, or time-loss injury.

Elbow wounds secondary to septic olecranon bursitis are a challenging problem to treat. Neurotized fasciocutaneous free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flaps provide a reliable soft tissue coverage option with the opportunity to provide protective sensation to a common pressure point. Free flaps can provide coverage when alternative options lower on the reconstructive ladder are unavailable. A 69-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis presented with septic olecranon bursitis requiring serial debridement resulting in significant soft tissue loss and bone exposure. A free ALT, with fascial tacking sutures, was used for reconstruction with subsequent neurotization resulting in successful resolution of bursitis and persistent fluid drainage. Neurotized free ALT flaps provide durable soft tissue coverage for a challenging area to treat while also providing sensory protection to a pressure point area.

Calcific tendinitis is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite within or around tendon tissue. Although it has traditionally been regarded as a structural tendon pathology, growing clinical evidence suggests that symptom severity, particularly pain, is more closely related to inflammatory activity and disease stage than to the size or precise anatomical location of calcific deposits. In routine practice, patients most often seek medical attention during sudden and intense pain episodes, typically occurring in the resorptive phase. Current diagnostic frameworks and treatment strategies are largely derived from studies on rotator cuff calcific tendinitis. In contrast, calcific tendinitis involving nonrotator cuff sites remains under-recognized and is frequently misdiagnosed. These atypical presentations commonly manifest with acute inflammatory pain that mimics infection, fracture, or inflammatory arthropathy, often resulting in diagnostic confusion and unnecessary interventions. This narrative review adopts a pain-oriented, site-specific framework to examine calcific tendinitis, with emphasis on nonrotator cuff involvement. By integrating pain presentation, disease stage, and targeted imaging, we highlight a symptom-driven approach to diagnosis and management. Conservative care with site-specific rehabilitation remains fundamental, while invasive treatments should be reserved for refractory pain.

The case highlights the complementary role of dynamic ultrasound and magnetic resonance in an atypical cause of anterior elbow pain. Ultrasound revealed a hypoechoic mass adjacent to the distal biceps tendon and enabled assessment of its close relationship with the tendon by demonstrating movement synchronous with tendon excursion. Although establishing the final diagnosis was challenging, it was ultimately achieved through histological examination.

Olecranon bursitis is a common clinical condition that is usually traumatic, inflammatory, or bacterial in origin. Fungal involvement of the olecranon bursa is exceedingly rare and may present a diagnostic challenge because of its indolent course and nonspecific clinical and radiological features. A 63-year-old female with diabetes mellitus presented with a gradually progressive, painless swelling over the posterior aspect of the left elbow of 1 year duration. Ultrasonography revealed a thick-walled cystic lesion with internal echoes and septations overlying the olecranon process, while plain radiography showed a posterior soft-tissue density lesion with tiny calcific specks. The lesion was surgically excised. Gross examination showed a cystic mass containing thick greenish purulent material. Histopathological examination revealed a fibrocollagenous cyst wall with dense mixed inflammatory infiltrates and fibrinous necroinflammatory material containing scattered fungal hyphae. Gomori methenamine silver stain highlighted fungal elements, confirming the diagnosis of mycotic olecranon bursitis. Fungal bursitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic, nonresolving olecranon bursitis, particularly in patients with underlying risk factors such as diabetes mellitus. Careful histopathological examination with special stains plays a critical role in establishing the definitive diagnosis and guiding appropriate management.

In 2025, no novel pharmaceutical agents for horses and farm animals were introduced to the German veterinary drug market; however, the use of 2 existing active ingredients was expanded to include additional animal species. A dexamethasone preparation is now approved for use in goats, and a new product containing sodium salicylate for chickens was introduced. Oxalic acid dihydrate is now available as an impregnated strip for contact treatment. In the field of immunological veterinary medicines, a vaccine against epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus in cattle was approved for the first time. In addition, all 3 vaccines already available against bluetongue virus in cattle and sheep received approval. For chickens, there is a new trivalent combination product against Newcastle disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, and infectious bursitis, as well as a vaccine with an additional serotype of avian reovirus. A new method of administration enables an additional use for a vaccine against rotaviruses, coronaviruses, and E. coli (subcutaneous) in cattle. In addition, new package sizes of a vaccine for calves against bovine respiratory syncytial virus and bovine parainfluenza 3 virus, as well as a vaccine for chickens against avian salmonellosis have been introduced to the market.

Background: Chronic shoulder pain associated with subacromial bursitis is a common clinical condition characterized by pain and functional limitation, factors that contribute significantly to chronic morbidity for the patient. The combination of ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections and physical therapy may improve clinical outcomes. This study compared the effectiveness of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and standardized exercise-based physiotherapy after a common protocol of ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections in patients with chronic shoulder pain associated with subacromial bursitis. Methods: A randomized controlled pilot study was conducted on adult patients with chronic shoulder pain (NRS ≥ 4), who received 3 weekly intra-bursal ultrasound-guided injections of corticosteroids and local anesthetic, followed by either 10 sessions of PNF or standardized exercise-based physiotherapy. The primary outcome was pain intensity assessed by NRS. Secondary outcomes included DASH, EQ-5D, EQ-VAS, and ROM, assessed at baseline, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Results: The PNF group showed greater improvements in selected outcomes and at some follow-up time points, particularly for functional measures and shoulder ROM. However, between-group differences were not consistent across all predefined outcomes. Conclusions: Both PNF-based rehabilitation and standardized exercise-based physiotherapy may improve clinical outcomes after ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection in patients with subacromial bursitis. However, the added value of PNF appears limited to selected outcomes and time points, and its superiority over standardized physiotherapy cannot be definitively established.
