- Ischemic colitis associated with oral semaglutide with recurrence upon rechallenge. [Journal Article]Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]RE
- Ischemic colitis associated with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists is an exceptionally rare condition, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman treated with oral semaglutide (Rybelsus®) for weight loss who experienced three episodes of abdominal pain and hematochezia temporally associated with drug exposure. The third episode, wh…

- Mass-forming ischemic colitis mimicking colon cancer: A case report of early repeat colonoscopy. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: In the absence of colonic perforation or obstruction, short-term follow-up colonoscopy and biopsy helped distinguish mass-forming ischemic colitis from colon cancer, avoiding misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgery.

- Gastrointestinal complications of cocaine use: a narrative literature review. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Cocaine use is a significant and under-recognized contributor to severe GI morbidity and mortality, with complications spanning ischemia and perforation to hepatopancreatic injury. The evidentiary foundation remains overwhelmingly derived from case reports and small series; only three comparative or aggregated studies provide quantitative risk data, two limited to ischemic colitis and one examining route of use across the wider intestinal-ischemia literature. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for cocaine-related GI disease in young patients presenting with abdominal pain or ischemic features, use the differential-diagnosis framework and algorithm proposed here to avoid diagnostic delay, and account for polysubstance use when interpreting presentations. Future research should prioritize registry-based or multicenter comparative studies to better quantify risk, outcomes, and the independent contribution of confounders.

- Colon Single Stripe Sign in Chronic NSAID Use During Norovirus Infection: A Two-Hit Model of Ischemic Colitis. [Journal Article]
- The colon single stripe sign (CSSS) is associated with ischemic-pattern colonic injury. We report a 69-year-old woman with norovirus infection, hematochezia, recurrent left-sided colitis, and chronic NSAID use found to have CSSS on colonoscopy, suggesting a multifactorial "two-hit" mechanism involving NSAID-related mucosal vulnerability and transient hypoperfusion.

- Azoreductase-Responsive NIR Fluorescent Self-Assembled Probe for Hypoxia Imaging of Tumors, Hindlimb Ischemia, and Ulcerative Colitis. [Journal Article]Anal Chem. 2026 Aug 25; 98(33):24237-24248.AC
- Azoreductase (AzoR) has emerged as a key player in reductive metabolism under hypoxia and a potential biomarker for hypoxia-associated pathologies, such as cancer and ulcerative colitis (UC). However, current clinical practice lacks a reliable method for real-time AzoR monitoring to effectively guide personalized therapies and assess treatment responses. We address this challenge by developing an…

- Trends and Determinants of Inpatient Colonoscopy Use and Timing in Adults Hospitalized with Ischemic Colitis: A National Analysis, 2017-2022. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Inpatient colonoscopy use in ischemic colitis declined modestly between 2017 and 2022, while timing among patients undergoing colonoscopy remained stable. Use and timing varied across measured illness severity, hospital, regional, and sociodemographic characteristics. Differences in timing across race and payer groups warrant further study to determine whether they reflect inequities in care or other unmeasured clinical and health-system factors.

- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the value of emergency POCUS in identifying high-risk abdominal pathology, the importance of early surgical involvement despite reassuring initial tests, and a potential supplement-associated risk factor in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

- Ulcerative colitis (UC) in the elderly: diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. [Review]
- Ulcerative colitis (UC) demonstrates a bimodal incidence distribution, with a significant second peak and the highest prevalence observed in individuals aged ≥60 years. The pathogenesis of elderly UC involves immunosenescence-manifested by Th17/Treg imbalance and the accumulation of cells with a pro-inflammatory senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP)-alongside age-related dysbiosis, inc…

- Fluorescence ureteral navigation in laparoscopic Hartmann's procedure after aortic repair: a case report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case demonstrates the utility of the NIRFUC in laparoscopic colorectal redo surgery with severe adhesions. The NIRFUC may improve intraoperative safety by supporting anatomic orientation and facilitating safe dissection without ureteral complications in complex cases.

- Gut Trouble: A Rare Case of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate-Induced Ischemic Colitis in a Young Adult. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Aug; 18(8):e114313.C
- Ischemic colitis is a potentially life-threatening complication resulting from diminished blood flow to the colon. While the classic presentation is acute, crampy abdominal pain preceding hematochezia in older patients with cardiovascular comorbidities, it can present atypically in different demographics. The diagnosis can be established through appropriate clinical suspicion, along with endoscop…

- Protein Kinase C Blockers Do Not Reverse the Cardioprotective Effect of Probiotic Strains in Rats with a Systemic Inflammatory Response. [Journal Article]
- The hypothesis that protein kinase C (PKC) participates in the signaling stage of the cardioprotective response to the administration of probiotics was tested in experiments on male Wistar rats using a model of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), which includes obesity and chemically induced colitis. To provide probiotic cardioprotective effects, Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA-5) and B…

- Deep learning analysis of capillary refill dynamics in ischemic colitis: differentiating reversible vs. gangrenous mucosa. [Journal Article]Front Gastroenterol (Lausanne). 2026; 5:1782255.FG
- Ischemic colitis remains a diagnostic challenge, as endoscopic grading of mucosal ischemia is subjective and insensitive for transmural infarction. While the majority of non-gangrenous cases are resolved conservatively, gangrenous mucosa necessitates immediate resection. The current reliance on visual signals, such as color and bleeding, results in misclassification and variability. We propose a …
