- Risk-Stratified Cardiac Monitoring During Antipsychotic Treatment in Adolescents and Young Adults. [Journal Article]Acta Psychiatr Scand. 2026 Oct 07. [Online ahead of print]AP
- CONCLUSIONS: Monitoring should be tiered rather than uniformly scheduled for all patients. The proposed framework distinguishes core clinical risk assessment from targeted cardiac testing and identifies precautionary intervals that require prospective validation.

- Perceived Utility of Combining Atypical Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics With Psychosocial Interventions: An Exploratory Survey of Mid-Career Psychiatrists in Japan. [Journal Article]Neuropsychopharmacol Rep. 2026 Dec; 46(4):e70173.NR
- CONCLUSIONS: This exploratory study suggests that mid-career Japanese psychiatrists, particularly those with a favorable attitude toward atypical LAIs, perceive the combination of LAIs with psychosocial support not merely as an adherence tool but as a synergistic strategy promoting broader functional recovery. Because respondents represent a small, predominantly male, self-selected sample, the generalizability of the findings is limited.

- CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that starting antipsychotic treatment at the lower end of the recommended dose range may be feasible for some individuals with first-episode schizophrenia without compromising treatment continuation while potentially reducing weight gain, although confirmation in randomized dose-strategy trials is required.

- Lurasidone ameliorates doxorubicin-induced chemobrain in male Wistar rats: involvement of the hippocampal and prefrontal cortex CREB/BDNF/Glt-1 axis and glutamate homeostasis. [Journal Article]
- Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment, commonly referred to as "chemobrain", represents a frequent and distressing complication of cancer therapy. Doxorubicin (DOX), a widely used chemotherapeutic agent, contributes to these deficits partly through mechanisms involving oxidative stress, inflammatory cascades, and disruption of glutamate homeostasis, but unfortunately, the precise role of alte…

- Targeted Treatment of Agitation in Alzheimer's Dementia: Prioritizing Function and Safety Over Sedation and Other Serious Harms. [Practice Guideline]Prim Care Companion CNS Disord. 2026 Sep 22; 28(5).PC
- Agitation is a common and clinically significant neuropsychiatric condition in Alzheimer's dementia. Clinicians across the spectrum of care settings frequently encounter agitation but often lack practical clinical guidance. In April 2026, a consensus panel of clinical experts reviewed the literature and developed guidance for managing agitation in Alzheimer's dementia. The panel emphasized the cr…

- [Psychopharmacological treatment of mentally ill offenders : A sample survey of forensic psychiatric patients admitted to two forensic psychiatric facilities in Hesse]. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic advantage of combinations of psychotropic drugs compared to monotherapy is not sufficiently supported by clinical evidence. The therapeutic advantage of combination therapies compared with monotherapy is not sufficiently established for psychopharmacotherapy in general, and for antipsychotic treatment in particular. However, the high prevalence of psychopharmacological polypharmacy in this study reflects routine clinical practice in forensic psychiatry. Further analyses are meaningful to evaluate specific substance combinations in terms of drug safety and off-label use.

- Case Report: Unmasking catatonia in adolescents: a potential triggering role of corticosteroids in two clinical cases. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: While corticosteroids remain essential for treating neuroinflammatory conditions, clinicians should be aware of the potential for severe psychiatric adverse effects, including catatonia, in pediatric patients. Careful differential diagnosis, interdisciplinary collaboration, and timely psychiatric intervention are critical to avoid iatrogenic worsening. Further research is needed to clarify underlying neurobiological mechanisms and identify markers of vulnerability, promoting safer and more personalized treatment approaches in children and adolescents.

- Distribution and age-interactions of cortical thickness associated with specific classes of medication used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder: Results from the international ENIGMA consortium. [Journal Article]Cortex. 2026 Sep 02; 205:1-23. [Online ahead of print]C
- MRI studies have revealed structural brain abnormalities in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Less is known about how age and medication influence them. We analyzed cortical thickness (CT) data from the ENIGMA-OCD Consortium, the world's largest OCD MRI database (46 datasets from 35 centers). Subjects comprised 2057 healthy controls, 1167 unmedicated individuals with OCD, and 1073 individuals …

- Tacrolimus-induced Akathisia in a Post-cardiac Transplant Patient: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- Akathisia, a prevalent drug-induced movement disorder, is characterized by inner restlessness and an irresistible urge to move. It can occur after starting a new medication, increasing the dose, or switching to another medication. It is commonly associated with, but not limited to antipsychotic use. Tacrolimus (TAC), an immunosuppressant vital for preventing acute rejection post-solid organ trans…

- Metabolic-Protective Strategies for Antipsychotic-Associated Weight Gain in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review. [Review]
- Second-generation antipsychotics are effective for a range of pediatric psychiatric and behavioral conditions but are commonly associated with weight gain and metabolic dysfunction. Metformin is the most extensively studied pharmacological strategy for preventing or treating this adverse effect; however, the randomized evidence base has evolved substantially with the publication of recent large t…

- Dorsal anterior cingulate cortex-targeted transcranial temporal interference stimulation for negative symptoms and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia: a participant- and assessor-blinded, sham-controlled randomized controlled trial protocol. [Journal Article]
- Persistent negative symptoms and cognitive deficits remain major obstacles to functional recovery in schizophrenia. These impairments are often only partially responsive to antipsychotic treatment and may persist even when other symptoms are clinically stable. Psychosocial interventions show inconsistent efficacy, and commonly used non-invasive brain stimulation techniques have limited ability to…

- Clobazam and Valproate, but Lamotrigine, a Sodium Channel Inhibitor, Reduce the Incidence of Hyperthermia-Induced Clonic Seizures in Dravet Syndrome Mice: Assessment of Anti-Seizure Effects in Mice Using a Stabilized Ambient Temperature System. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: These results reflect clinical findings that CLB and VPA suppress, but LTG does not suppress seizures in patients with DS. Our data demonstrate the validity of our test system to induce hyperthermia-induced seizures and to evaluate the efficacy of antiseizure medications in Scn1a KI/+ mice.

[Journal Article]Can J Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 15; :7067437261486956. [Online ahead of print]CJ
- BackgroundIndividuals with schizophrenia and concurrent substance use disorders (SUDs) face a high risk of rapid weight gain during residential treatment, driven by inpatient environmental factors, baseline metabolic vulnerability, and metabolically active psychotropic medications. Clozapine, commonly indicated for treatment-resistant psychosis, is frequently associated with early and substantial…

- Protective effects of central leptin on whole-body energy homeostasis following acute olanzapine exposure. [Journal Article]
- Antipsychotics represent mainstay treatment of schizophrenia and are also prescribed on- and off-label in other severe mental illnesses. Newer antipsychotic use is associated with severe metabolic side effects such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Leptin is a hormone secreted by adipose tissue, and it acts on the brain to decrease body weight by reducing food intake and stimulating energy expendit…
