  • Targeted Temperature Management at 35°C vs. 37°C for Heatstroke in ICU: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. [Journal Article]
Crit Care Med. 2026 Aug 06. [Online ahead of print]Wang YC, Wang JW, … Heatstroke Research Group in Southwest ChinaCC
  • CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study confirms the operational feasibility of a large-scale randomized clinical trial. However, therapeutic hypothermia was associated with significantly worse gastrointestinal injury and higher arrhythmia incidence, without evidence of neurologic or survival benefit. The universal requirement for pharmacological shivering control in the hypothermia group raises additional safety considerations. Based on current evidence, this strategy should not be routinely adopted in ICU heatstroke management.
  • On pethidine: The 'accidental' opioid that became a 'model' analgesic agent. [Journal Article]
Anaesth Intensive Care. 2026 Jun 14; :310057X261442548. [Online ahead of print]Mather LE, Tucker GTAI
  • A 1939 German publication on a search for novel synthetic atropine substitutes reported that 'Substanz III', named Dolantin (now generically known as pethidine and meperidine), was found coincidentally to also have morphine-like, albeit markedly weaker, analgesic properties. With a chemical structure not obviously related to morphine, it was thus an 'accidental opioid' and was soon successfully m…
  • Detection of opioid anesthetic compounds via ammonia-doped ion mobility spectrometry. [Journal Article]

  • Meperidine, morphine, and sufentanil exhibit a critical duality in contemporary medicine: while serving as essential clinical anesthetics with well-established therapeutic value, they have paradoxically contributed to a severe public health crisis due to their widespread abuse. In response to the pressing demands of contemporary anesthetic regulation and drug control initiatives, this study emplo…
  • Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®): Meperidine [BOOK]
Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®). National Institute of Child Health and Human Development: Bethesda (MD).BOOK
  • Intravenous meperidine during labor can interfere with nursing and maternal use of meperidine during breastfeeding can sedate the infants. Postpartum intravenous meperidine can slightly reduce the willingness of infants to breastfeed. Patient-controlled epidural analgesia postpartum appears to be free from these effects. Other agents, such as fentanyl, are preferred for intravenous or intramuscul…
