  • Toxicity of phosphate enemas - an updated review. [Systematic Review]
Clin Toxicol (Phila). 2022 Jun; 60(6):672-680.Hamilton Smith R, Eddleston M, Bateman DNCT
  • CONCLUSIONS: Phosphate enemas are potentially toxic, particularly in young children with Hirschsprung disease and in the elderly with co-morbidity. Raised awareness of the risk of phosphate enemas is still required. Other less toxic enema preparations are available and should be considered in patients at extremes of age. If phosphate enemas are the only clinical option careful monitoring of biochemical sequelae should be undertaken.

    J Med Imaging Radiat Sci. 2015 Dec; 46(4):380-387.Yaver M, Foo A, … Jones GJM
  • CONCLUSIONS: No significant difference was found between cohorts for rectal volume, gas volume, target coverage, and rectal and bladder volumes in the PTV. Hence, patients should be offered a choice between cohort 1 and 2 bowel preparation regimens to allow for patient preference customization. Cohort 2 bladder preparation regimen was shown to be superior for consistency with slightly larger volume over time.

However, powder PEG-3350 alone and in combination with oral sodium phosphate was observed to be statistically superior to magnesium citrate, when used for colon preparation for colonoscopy.
