- Molecular Evidence of Autochthonous Environmental Acquisition of Fonsecaea Pediatric Infection in the United States. [Journal Article]
- Fonsecaea species cause chromoblastomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis, but links between environmental exposure and infection are poorly defined. We describe a 4-year-old boy with finger swelling after oak tree laceration in Houston, Texas. Broad-range polymerase chain reaction identified F. pedrosoi or F. monophora, and metagenomic sequencing of tree bark and soil detected Fonsecaea DNA.

- Autophagy drives immunosuppressive function in Fonsecaea monophora-induced PMN-MDSCs in chromoblastomycosis. [Journal Article]Microb Pathog. 2026 Nov; 220:108808.MP
- CONCLUSIONS: F. monophora drives PMN-MDSCs-mediated immunosuppression through an autophagy impairment-ROS accumulation axis, providing a mechanistic basis for CBM chronicity and a therapeutic strategy targeting MDSCs.

- In vitro study on synergistic antifungal effects of docetaxel combined with azoles against dematiaceous fungi and Aspergillus niger. [Journal Article]Front Microbiol. 2026; 17:1832946.FM
- CONCLUSIONS: The combined scheme of DTX and POS can significantly reduce the minimum inhibitory concentration of POS and show synergistic antifungal activity, especially significant against E. dermatitidis and A. niger. Its mechanism of action may be related to the reduction of efflux pump activity.

- Impaired NLRP3 inflammasome activation by chitin underlies refractory chromoblastomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi muriform cells. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: NLRP3 mediates host defense against muriform cells yet fails to resolve chronic infection. Chitin accumulation on muriform cells attenuates NLRP3 activation, thereby promoting chromoblastomycosis chronicity.

- Molecular detection of Fonsecaea pedrosoi in Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks from Venezuela. [Journal Article]Fungal Biol. 2026 Aug; 130(5):101790.FB
- Chromoblastomycosis, caused primarily by Fonsecaea pedrosoi, is traditionally associated with traumatic environmental inoculation. We analyzed 50 Rhipicephalus sanguineus/R. microplus ticks from chromoblastomycosis-endemic Venezuelan states (Lara and Portuguesa) using Oxford Nanopore amplicon sequencing. Remarkably, F. pedrosoi dominated the tick eukaryotic microbiome, comprising 78% and 75% of f…

- Immunoproteomics and reverse vaccinology identify a protective T-cell epitope from Fonsecaea pedrosoi for experimental chromoblastomycosis. [Journal Article]Vaccine. 2026 Aug 30; 89:128902.V
- Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic neglected tropical mycosis caused predominantly by the melanized fungus Fonsecaea pedrosoi. Current treatments are prolonged and frequently ineffective, highlighting the need for new therapeutic strategies. Here, we applied an integrated immunoproteomic and reverse vaccinology approach to identify immunogenic antigens from F. pedrosoi and evaluate their vaccine po…

- Establishment of epidemiological cutoff values against Fonsecaea monophora, an agent of chromoblastomycosis and cerebral phaeohyphomycosis. [Journal Article]
- Fonsecaea monophora is a dematiaceous fungus with worldwide distribution that can cause chromoblastomycosis, an implantation mycosis and a neglected tropical disease. F. monophora also causes phaeohyphomycosis, including central nervous system infections like brain abscesses, with high mortality rates. In the absence of clinical breakpoints, epidemiological cutoff values (ECVs) can aid clinicians…

- Chromoblastomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi: a case report and literature review. [Case Reports]Front Med (Lausanne). 2026; 13:1842447.FM
- Fonsecaea pedrosoi, a pathogenic fungus within the order Chaetomycosis of the family Dematiaceae, is the primary causative agent of Chromoblastomycosis (CBM). Its clinical manifestations are diverse and lack specificity, often being confused with other skin diseases, which can easily lead to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. This article reports a case of a 36-year-old immunocompromised female wi…

- Predominance of Fonsecaea nubica in Chromoblastomycosis: A Single-Centre Study from Southern India. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the importance of molecular diagnostics in accurately characterizing the epidemiology of chromoblastomycosis in endemic regions. The emergence of F. nubica has implications for its clinical management, diagnosis, and surveillance. The study contributes valuable data to the limited molecular epidemiological literature from India and supports ongoing efforts to improve chromoblastomycosis surveillance and management in resource-limited settings.

- Squamous cell carcinoma in chronic lesions of recalcitrant chromoblastomycosis. Study of ten patients treated at the Dermatological Center of Yucatán, Mexico. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic, polymorphic cutaneous infection often diagnosed late, leading to long-standing disease and disabling sequelae. Malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma represents one of its most severe complications and may occur even in residual scars. Early diagnosis and prolonged follow-up are essential to reduce morbidity and prevent malignant progression.

- Identification and rational engineering of a novel zearalenone-degrading enzyme from Fonsecaea erecta. [Journal Article]Food Res Int. 2026 Jul 31; 236:119263.FR
- Zearalenone (ZEN) is a secondary metabolite produced by Fusarium species that threatens food safety and animal health. In this study, we identified and isolated a novel ZEN-degrading enzyme FeZ12 from Fonsecaea erecta through sequence homology alignment, systematic learning models (SoluProt, DeepSoluE), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. FeZ12 was successfully heterologously expressed in Es…
