- The Thrills and Spills of GHB: Patterns and Negative Events Connected with Use in a Large Community Sample. [Journal Article]Subst Use Misuse. 2026 Aug 11; :1-10. [Online ahead of print]SU
- Introduction: Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and its precursor gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) are psychoactive substances commonly associated with men who have sex with men (MSM) and sexualized substance use contexts. Large-scale studies exploring broader sociodemographic characteristics and substance use behaviors among GHB/GBL users remain scarce. Methods: A convenience sample was recruited online …

- Risk Factors Associated with Deterioration in Sedative Drug Overdose. [Journal Article]
- BACKGROUND: Sedative overdoses, particularly involving opioids, γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and benzodiazepines, are an increasing contributor to toxicology admissions and intensive care unit (ICU) utilisation in Australia. While pharmacological mechanisms are well characterised, identifying which patients will deteriorate remains challenging. Existing risk stratification tools, such as the Glasgow …

- [Chemsex blamed for serious poisoning and death]. [Case Reports]Ugeskr Laeger. 2026 Feb 23; 188(9).UL
- Chemsex refers to the use of psychoactive substances, such as GHB, methamphetamine, and poppers, to enhance sexual experiences, predominantly among men who have sex with men and transgender individuals in LGBT+ communities. The practice is associated with increased risks, including sexually transmitted infections, substance dependence, overdose, and cardiac arrest. We present a fatal case of card…

- Overdose risk in the context of chemsex among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. [Review]
- Chemsex is defined as the use of psychoactive substances - most commonly methamphetamine, synthetic cathinones, and Gamma-hydroxybutyrate/Gamma butyrolactone (GHB/GBL) - to enhance sexual activity primarily among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). It is associated with higher rates of sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and mental health conditions. However, despite subst…

- 'A fine line between euphoria and death': a qualitative study exploring gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use among people who identify as heterosexual living in Australia. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In our heterosexual sample of people who use GHB in Australia, we identified novel aspects of GHB use characterised by escapism, intentional risk-taking, and gendered harm reduction strategies, while stigma featured alongside GHB use. Findings highlight gaps in public health education, particularly regarding intentional dosing towards unconsciousness, misconceptions about overdose management, and barriers to help seeking. Targeted, context-specific harm reduction and mental health interventions responsive to these experiences are required.

- CONCLUSIONS: Elucidating ketamine's mechanism of action may inform the development of next-generation psychoplastogens that promote neural plasticity in TRD and unipolar MDD. However, ketamine's psychoactive properties and abuse potential, along with concerns regarding misuse and diversion, underscore the need for enhanced clinical oversight and regulatory frameworks.
