  • Critical care aspects of the patient awaiting liver transplantation. [Journal Article]
Curr Opin Organ Transplant. 2026 Sep 09. [Online ahead of print]Nagendran M, Grimes E, Auzinger GCO
  • CONCLUSIONS: Pretransplant critical care focuses on extrahepatic organ support and maintaining transplant candidacy. Prognostic scores identify risk but do not by themselves determine futility, which is dynamic and selection-dependent.
  • ER proteostasis failure in HYOU1 deficiency alters B cells, neutrophils, and interferon signalling. [Journal Article]
    J Hum Immun. 2026 Nov 02; 2(6):e20250234.Idani A, Bibi-Triki S, … Bahram SJH
  • Hypoxia upregulated 1 (HYOU1) is a stress-inducible ER chaperone. We investigated 2 unrelated patients carrying biallelic HYOU1 variants and presenting with primary immunodeficiency. Patient 1, homozygous for p.Pro444His, displayed failure to thrive, hypoglycemia, B cell lymphopenia, and neutropenia. Patient 2, compound heterozygous for p.Arg262Gln and p.Pro757_Glu758insAla, exhibited recurrent i…

  • Case Report: Dual toxicity of voriconazole in a CYP2C19 poor metabolizer: a case analysis of life-threatening neutropenia and hepatocellular injury. [Case Reports]
Front Pharmacol. 2026; 17:1875506.Liu KK, Gong WJFP
  • CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates a clinical scenario in which pre-emptive pharmacogenomic testing, vigilant monitoring of complete blood counts alongside liver function, and integration with therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) may enhance safety in patients requiring long-term voriconazole therapy. The absence of TDM data precludes definitive confirmation of voriconazole overexposure; nevertheless, the convergence of CYP2C19 PM genotype, temporal relationship, dechallenge, and structured causality assessment renders presumed drug accumulation the most plausible explanation for the observed toxicities while not excluding all competing contributors.
  • Tissue mitochondrial activity dictates the macrophage pool size. [Journal Article]
    Sci Immunol. 2026 Sep 04; 11(123):eaeb9244.Pena-Couso L, Sicilia J, … Nicolás-Ávila JASI
  • Removal of cellular waste from the extracellular space is fundamental for tissue health. Because the rate of material ejected by parenchymal cells varies across tissues, we searched for mechanisms that couple waste production and removal. Here, we show that the uptake of parenchyma-released mitochondria by macrophages is prominent across organs that rely on oxidative respiration-including heart, …
