  • Giardia duodenalis is a flagellated commensal protozoan that can infect both humans and animals. Infection can result in clinical signs such as diarrhea or, more often, the infection can be subclinical. Within the G. duodenalis species, there are several major genetic assemblages, A - H. Certain assemblages are species specific (C and D in dogs, F in cats) while assemblages A and B can infect hum…
  • Pathogenicity and virulence of Giardia intestinalis. [Review]
    Virulence. 2026 Oct 06; :2745308. [Online ahead of print]Bhetwal A, Stenlund E, Svärd SGV
  • Giardiasis, caused by Giardia intestinalis, is a prevalent intestinal protozoan infection worldwide. Clinical manifestations are variable, and many infections remain asymptomatic. Disease pathogenesis is multifactorial, involving brush border enzyme deficiency, apoptosis, dysbiosis and increased intestinal permeability. Advances in genomics, genetic tools, and model systems have substantially imp…
  • Molecular Detection of Enteric Protozoa in Cattle from North Portugal. [Journal Article]
    Pathogens. 2026 Sep 04; 15(9).Gomes-Gonçalves S, Figueiredo RJ, … Mesquita JRP
  • A total of 100 fecal samples collected from cattle in the district of Viana do Castelo, northern Portugal, were molecularly screened for Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Blastocystis sp. This study represents the first molecular survey of enteric protozoa in cattle from the district of Viana do Castelo, northern Portugal. Blastocystis sp. was the most frequently detected protozoan an…
  • Multilocus Oxford Nanopore sequencing reveals genetic diversity of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in surface and wastewater in Southwestern Colombia. [Journal Article]
    Parasit Vectors. 2026 Aug 26; 19(1).Gutiérrez S, Urrea V, … Ramírez JDPV
  • CONCLUSIONS: The integration of newly designed primers with multilocus ONT amplicon sequencing provides improved resolution for detecting co-occurring genotypes and species of waterborne protozoa in complex environmental matrices compared to conventional single-locus Sanger approaches. These findings document broad circulation of diverse G. duodenalis assemblages and Cryptosporidium species in the Río Pasto basin, contributing to the genomic surveillance of these pathogens in Latin America. The presence and genetic diversity data reported here may support water quality monitoring and inform risk management strategies under a One Health framework; however, conclusions regarding quantitative exposure risk require complementary data on parasite viability and concentration.
  • Genetic assemblages of Giardia duodenalis linked to distinct symptom profiles. [Journal Article]
    Parasitol Int. 2026 Aug 30; 117:103369. [Online ahead of print]Guleria S, Sett M, … Khurana SPI
  • Giardia duodenalis is a common intestinal parasite that infects children and adults worldwide. Of its eight known assemblages (A-H), assemblages A and B are the predominant genotypes infecting humans. The infection ranges from asymptomatic to chronic diarrhea, but whether disease severity depends on parasite strain or host factors remains unclear. This study analyzed Giardia isolates from non-Inf…
  • Comparison of coproparasitological diagnoses in cats: evaluation of techniques and their combinations. [Journal Article]
J Small Anim Pract. 2026 Aug 26. [Online ahead of print]Gomes APC, de Fortes MCL, … de Ramos DGSJS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Coproparasitological techniques remain the primary tools for diagnosing gastrointestinal parasites in routine feline practice, and the veterinarian's clinical suspicion is fundamental for performing the most appropriate technique. Considering the zoonotic potential of several parasites and frequent neglect of feline parasitosis, accurate diagnostic strategies and preventive veterinary practices are fundamental for reducing transmission in animals and humans.
  • Giardia duodenalis Infection and Pachymeningitis in a Patient With Agammaglobulinemia. [Journal Article]
    Clin Pediatr (Phila). 2026 Aug 26; :99228261467298. [Online ahead of print]Sonmez G, Kaya C, … Cagdas DCPed
  • X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) is a rare immunodeficiency caused by a mutation in Bruton's tyrosine kinase, resulting in profoundly low immunoglobulin levels and susceptibility to recurrent infections. We report a 14-year-old patient with XLA who presented with persistent fever, bloody diarrhea, and headache suggestive of pachymeningitis. The patient had chronic giardiasis. His clinical condit…
