- Impaired regulatory T cell mediated immune tolerance promotes neurodegeneration in glaucoma. [Journal Article]medRxiv. 2026 Sep 20.M
- Neurodegenerative diseases are increasingly recognized to involve detrimental interactions between the immune and nervous systems, yet whether failure of peripheral immune tolerance actively drives neuronal loss frequently remains unclear. Here, using primary open-angle glaucoma as a model of chronic neurodegeneration, we demonstrate that dysregulated adaptive immunity is sufficient to promote re…

- Systemic diseases to the mechanism of primary open angle glaucoma. [Review]Int J Ophthalmol. 2026; 19(10):2047-2063.IJ
- Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder involving genetic susceptibility, environmental factors, and systemic abnormalities, whose pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Based on baseline intraocular pressure (IOP), POAG is classified into two subtypes: high-tension glaucoma (HTG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). This review summarizes and integrates rece…

- Vision-Related Quality of Life and Work Productivity in Patients With Keratoconus and Glaucoma: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Keratoconus was associated with better VRQoL than POAG, potentially reflecting differences in disease mechanisms and the greater potential for visual rehabilitation through optical correction. Despite these differences, both conditions had a similar impact on work productivity, emphasizing the need to assess functional and socioeconomic outcomes in chronic ophthalmic diseases.

- Presence of Obsessionality and Hysteria in Patients with Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma. [Journal Article]
- Background and Objectives: Glaucoma is a group of conditions of the eye that can damage the optic nerve, leading to optic neuropathy. Nevertheless, due to its chronic characteristics, it could also be the background for psychoneurotic disorders based on the psychological and emotional stress that it causes. The presented study aimed to examine the characteristics and the occurrence of obsessional…

- Chronological Analysis of Visual Field and Optic Nerve Thickness for the Early Diagnosis of Bilateral Chronic Open-Angle Glaucoma With a Masquerading Growing Pituitary Tumor. [Case Reports]
- This case illustrates that a pituitary tumor can be masked by coexisting glaucoma, and that early differential diagnosis using optical coherence tomography (OCT), Central 24-2 threshold visual field testing, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to facilitate timely surgical intervention might avoid irreversible vision loss. A 73-year-old female was initially diagnosed with cataracts and glaucoma …

- Beyond the Visual Field: Psychosocial Determinants of Psychological Distress in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Psychosocial variables are significant and interrelated predictors of distress in POAG, beyond what is captured by traditional clinical metrics. These findings underscore the critical role of modifiable psychosocial factors in shaping patients' emotional well-being. Integrated care models to address psychosocial needs represents an important opportunity to mitigate distress and improve glaucoma outcomes.

- Exploring Endotoxemia in Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, and Diabetic Retinopathy. [Review]Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. 2026 Aug 03; 67(10):14.IO
- Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of Gram-negative bacteria, is a potent activator of the innate immune system and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and diabetic retinopathy (DR). LPS enters systemic circulation through bacterial lysis or active secretion, leading to endotoxemia-either…

- PurposeTo report a rare case of bilateral conjunctival and epibulbar extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) without lymph node involvement, potentially associated with long-term use of benzalkonium chloride (BAK)-containing glaucoma medications.Case PresentationA 68-year-old male with a 10-year history of primary open-angle glaucoma, managed with multiple topical hypotensive agents, developed bil…

- Beyond intraocular pressure: vascular and metabolic modifiers of optic nerve vulnerability in glaucoma. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Systemic vascular and metabolic factors may modify optic nerve susceptibility but are not established independent causes or treatment targets. Intraocular pressure lowering remains the therapeutic cornerstone, and prospective glaucoma-specific intervention studies are needed before systemic treatment recommendations can be made.

- Ocular Manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome: A Systemic Vascular Phenotype. [Review]Diabetes Obes Metab. 2026 Jul 20. [Online ahead of print]DO
- CONCLUSIONS: Ocular complications associated with MetS are common and may be vision-threatening. Risk-based ocular surveillance and metabolic optimization are justified, particularly in patients with diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, visual symptoms or established vascular disease. However, the strength of disease-specific evidence varies: interventional evidence is strongest for diabetic retinopathy risk reduction and glaucoma treatment through intraocular pressure lowering, whereas evidence for AMD, NAION, RVO, cataract and dry eye disease is more frequently observational or indirect.

- Proteomic Analyses of Early Versus Advanced Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Uncover Biochemical Signatures Associated With Disease Staging. [Journal Article]
- Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of blindness, yet the biochemical mechanisms underlying disease progression remain poorly understood. This study characterized aqueous humor (AH) across early and advanced stages of POAG using large-scale proteomics. AH samples were collected from patients with mild POAG, advanced POAG, and non-glaucomatous controls in this prospective cross-s…

- Ultrastructural characteristics of the trabecular meshwork in primary open-angle glaucoma versus chronic angle-closure glaucoma: a comparative study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Surgical-stage POAG and CACG share a "final common pathway" of severe TM cellular reduction and structural disruption. However, their distinct collagen fibril architectures suggest divergent ECM remodeling pathways that may contribute to subtype-specific outflow resistance and disease mechanisms.

- A covalent inhibitor targeting Cys-349 of LIMK1 confers selectivity over LIMK2. [Journal Article]
- LIM domain kinase 1 (LIMK1) has been identified as a promising therapeutic target for a variety of conditions, such as chronic pain, open-angle glaucoma, various cancers, schizophrenia, and Fragile X syndrome. However, identifying inhibitors that selectively inhibit LIMK1 over LIM domain kinase 2 (LIMK2) has proven to be challenging. A viable strategy to overcome this difficulty is the developmen…
