- Acute Pain Trajectory Phenotypes are Associated with Kinesiophobia and Functional Recovery in Surgical/Trauma ICU Patients: A 5-Year Retrospective Cohort Study Using a PERMA-Informed Framework. [Journal Article]J Pain Res. 2026; 19:620341.JP
- CONCLUSIONS: Acute pain in surgical/trauma ICU patients is highly heterogeneous. Higher-risk pain trajectory phenotypes were associated with kinesiophobia, which may represent a psychological barrier to functional recovery. Prospectively testing PERMA-informed strategies-particularly family support, meaning-oriented reframing, and goal-based achievement-may help clarify whether this approach can disrupt the pain-fear-immobility cycle.

- Systematic review and meta-analysis of the antidepressant-like effects of ginsenosides in animal models: comparative behavioral profiles and exploratory dose-stratified analysis. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Ginsenosides were associated with improvements across several depression-related behavioral domains in animal models. The evidence supports further investigation of GRb1 and other active monomers in standardized, adequately powered, head-to-head preclinical studies. It does not establish the superiority of one ginsenoside, clinical antidepressant efficacy, clinical safety, or an optimal therapeutic dose.

- Opposing manipulations of insular projections to the bed nuclei of the stria terminalis converge on behavioral passivity. [Journal Article]J Neurosci. 2026 Oct 01. [Online ahead of print]JN
- Adaptive stress coping involves flexible coordination of behavioral and neuroendocrine responses, yet how cortical regions orchestrate these outputs remains poorly understood. The insular cortex (IC) integrates interoceptive signals and projects to extended amygdala nuclei implicated in threat responses, including the anteroventral subdivision of the bed nuclei of the stria terminalis (avBST) and…

- A cortical-hippocampal communication undergoes rebalancing after new learning. [Journal Article]
- The brain's ability to consolidate a wide range of memories while maintaining their distinctiveness across experiences remains poorly understood. Sharp-wave ripples, neural oscillations that occur predominantly within CA1 of the hippocampus during immobility and sleep, have been shown to play a critical role in the consolidation process. More recently, evidence has uncovered functional heterogene…

- Supramammillary projections to the lateral preoptic area drive dopamine release and active behavior. [Journal Article]bioRxiv. 2026 Sep 07.B
- CONCLUSIONS: Active coping with threat or opportunity may depend on the supramammillary nucleus (SuM) to mobilize dopamine-driven approach behavior. This study identifies the lateral preoptic area as a second SuM target capable of driving dopamine release and reinforcing approach behavior, with activity that tracks whether an animal is facing a threat or consuming a reward. Because SuM neurons broadcast to this and other targets through extensive collateral branches, these results reshape how the SuM's role in active, approach-oriented behavior should be understood - not as a single circuit, but as a distributed one.

- The freeze-arrest model of catatonia: a critical neuroimaging review with evo-neurobiological integration. [Review]Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 30; 150:111953. [Online ahead of print]PN
- Catatonia is a heterogeneous and poorly defined entity. Akinetic catatonia shares core phenomenology with the adaptive freeze-to-tonic immobility response, a threat-defense system conserved across evolution. It has been suggested that catatonia may be the maladaptive counterpart of the freeze-to-tonic immobility response. While similar brain structures are implicated in both entities, no theory-d…

- Selecting appropriate weight parameters for nutritional prescription during nutrition support: a scoping review. [Review]Nutrition. 2026 Sep 08; 153:113424. [Online ahead of print]N
- Nutritional Support (NS) is essential for preserving or restoring nutritional status in clinical settings. Accurate nutritional prescription depends on selecting an appropriate Body Weight (BW), yet clinical factors such as edema, ascites, inflammation, immobility, and obesity can compromise the reliability of Current Body Weight (CBW). Although multiple guidelines exist for NS implementation, th…

- Passive Behavioral Patterns in Symptomatic WAG/Rij Rats: Dissociation From Absence Epilepsy and Sex-Dependent Link Between Early Fear Coping and Post-Stress Freezing. [Journal Article]J Integr Neurosci. 2026 Sep 08; 25(9):52427.JI
- CONCLUSIONS: Four primary conclusions emerge from this study: (1) symptomatic WAG/Rij rats exhibit low levels of freezing in a safe environment; (2) sex differences exist in unsafe contexts, but not safe ones; (3) there is a sex-dependent association between early passive behavior and later freezing; (4) there is no relationship between the severity of absence epilepsy and passive behavioral patterns. Therefore, thalamocortical disturbances associated with SWDs do not correlate with fear-related freezing or passive coping behaviors, suggesting a distinction between seizure-related immobility and non-seizure passive behaviors. There is also a sex-specific link between early passive coping and later context-inappropriate freezing, warranting further study in models of anxiety and PTSD.
