- The impact of paroxetine on insulin secretion and sensitivity through AKT/GLUT4 axis. [Journal Article]
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are reported to be implicated in altering glucose homeostasis and inducing hypoglycemia in diabetic patients and mice. Herein, the effects of paroxetine on glucose homeostasis, insulin secretion, and insulin sensitivity were investigated in both healthy and streptozotocin-induced-insulin deficient mouse model. Mice were administered with paroxetine …

- [Differential diagnosis between Bipolar Disorder and behavioral variant Frontotemporal Dementia: the role of longitudinal neuropsychological assessment. A Case Report.] [Case Reports]Riv Psichiatr. 2026 Sep-Oct; 61(5):236-241.RP
- CONCLUSIONS: The longitudinal improvement confirms that the deficits detected at T0 were an expression of the clinical state of BD rather than a progressive neurodegenerative process. This case emphasizes the fundamental importance of longitudinal neuropsychological assessment and a multidisciplinary approach to avoid misdiagnosis and to optimize the pharmacological treatment of affective and psychotic symptoms.

- A scoping review of adverse events associated with concomitant beta-adrenoreceptor blockers and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. [Review]Br J Clin Pharmacol. 2026 Oct 07. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- Beta-adrenoreceptor blockers (beta-blockers) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly used medications and often used together, such as for the treatment of anxiety. However, there is no recent review of any potential adverse events related to concomitant use of medicines from each group. This scoping review therefore aimed to provide this narrative synthesis. Key database…

- Differential Effects of Antidepressants on Hypothalamic Serotonin Levels in Rats: An In Vivo Microdialysis Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Antidepressant treatment increases hypothalamic serotonin, with clomipramine and sertraline producing the most pronounced effects. Considering that clomipramine and paroxetine combine high serotonergic elevation with notable anticholinergic activity, these drugs may pose a higher risk of voiding difficulties than fluoxetine or sertraline. This study focused on characterizing central serotonergic responses to antidepressant administration as a neurochemical endpoint. The relative risk of voiding difficulty across different antidepressant classes may help guide individualized antidepressant selection. Clinicians should exercise caution when prescribing these agents to elderly patients, individuals with benign prostatic hyperplasia, or those receiving concurrent anticholinergic medications.

- Antidepressant treatment alters both suicide-candidate gene expression levels and mitochondrial bioenergetic function in human microglial HMC3 cell line. [Journal Article]Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry. 2026 Oct 05; 150:111961. [Online ahead of print]PN
- CONCLUSIONS: Sertraline, Amitriptyline, and Trazodone exerted significant decreases in ATP and PGC-1α levels, suggesting an increase in treatment-emergent suicidality risk due to a potential increase in microglial activity, while Paroxetine exerted a protective effect. The most prominent finding was that the antidepressants decreasing ATP and PGC-1α levels, simultaneously, induced suicide-candidate gene expression profiles which are also indicative of an increase in treatment-emergent suicidality risk. Despite a decrease in ATP and PGC-1α levels induced by three antidepressants, ROS levels remained unchanged, suggesting a potential oxidative stress-independent bioenergetic impairment. Collectively, these results suggest a clear correlation between PGC-1α levels and suicide-candidate gene expression profiles regarding the ultimate change in the treatment-emergent suicidality risk.

- Serotonin transporter (SERT), encoded by SLC6A4, is a key regulator of serotonergic neurotransmission and a primary target for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Dysregulation of SERT is implicated in neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). SSRIs, while widely used, have limitations such as adverse effects, drug-drug interactions,…

- Preventive Activity of Paroxetine Against the Formation of Mixed Biofilms of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus on Peripheral Venous Catheters. [Journal Article]
- Catheters are often sources of bloodstream infections since they promote the development of polymicrobial biofilms composed of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus, which are resistant to conventional treatments. Paroxetine (PRX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has demonstrated antibiofilm activity against both C. albicans and S. aureus. However, studies evaluating PRX's activity…

- CONCLUSIONS: The effect of specific antidepressants on QTc interval differed between adults with depression. No evidence associated antidepressant use with early MACE and non-suicidal sudden death. To support shared decision making and taking into account the trade-off between benefits and harms, individual modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors should be considered when choosing antidepressants.
