  • Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Albuterol [BOOK]
Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
  • Although no published data exist on the use of albuterol by mouth or inhaler during lactation, data from the related drug, terbutaline, indicate that very little is expected to be excreted into breastmilk.[1] The authors of several reviews and an expert panel agree that use of inhaled bronchodilators is acceptable during breastfeeding because of the low bioavailability and maternal serum levels a…
  • The Role of Low Global Warming Potential Propellants on Suspension Metered Dose Inhaler Sprays. [Journal Article]
    AAPS PharmSciTech. 2025 Jun 02; 26(5):154.Duke DJ, Rao L, … Young PAP
  • The reformulation of suspension-based pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDI) with low global warming potential (GWP) propellants is challenged by wide-ranging changes to their chemicophysical properties such as vapor pressure, density and latent heat. The effect of low-GWP propellants on spray pattern and plume geometry for suspension pMDIs are not fully understood. There is a lack of data rega…
  • Corticosteroid-LABA inhalers increase phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and flow (PTF) in rabbits. [Journal Article]
Laryngoscope. 2023 Oct; 133(10):2680-2686.Tanner K, Robison HJ, … Christensen MBL
  • CONCLUSIONS: Following 8-week exposure to ICs, rabbit larynges required greater air pressure and flow to initiate phonation. Because even modest phonation onset differences can have a meaningful clinical impact on voice function, these findings suggest that LABA ICs may put patients at risk for voice disorders. Furthermore, these voice disorders may occur within a relatively short timeframe. The results from this study have important clinical implications for voice care in those who use ICs.
  • Nationwide Shortage of Albuterol Inhalers and Off-Label Use in COVID-19 Patients. [Journal Article]
Pediatr Allergy Immunol Pulmonol. 2020 Dec; 33(4):216-219.Hendeles L, Prabhakaran SPA
  • The surge in COVID-19 cases during the 2020 Spring led to a nationwide shortage of albuterol inhalers. As a new surge has begun, shortages may make it difficult for patients with obstructive lung disease, including children with asthma, to obtain refills. Since there is no evidence that albuterol relieves symptoms in COVID-19 patients with respiratory symptoms not caused by bronchospasm, it is re…
