- Mammals produce cyclo-octasulfur to suppress lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis. [Journal Article]
- Elemental sulfur is an evolutionarily ancient metabolite, yet its generation, storage, and function in animals have remained unclear. We show that mammals harbor elemental sulfur in the form of its most stable allotrope, cyclo-octasulfur (S8). We found that S8 accumulates to millimolar concentrations in mitochondrial membranes and in lipid droplets in both mouse and human cells. We further identi…

- An integrated molecular cytogenetic platform enables precise characterization of Thinopyrum ponticum chromatin and its structural modifications in wheat background. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: By integrating ND‑FISH, Oligo‑FISH painting, and chromosome microdissection, we established a comprehensive platform for decaploid Thinopyrum ponticum, enabling karyotyping, sequencing, and marker development, which provides precise tools for the targeted introgression and utilization of alien chromatin in wheat breeding. Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey, a decaploid wild relative of wheat, represents a valuable genetic reservoir for improving abiotic stress tolerance and disease resistance in wheat breeding. However, its complex genome structure and polyploid nature have long impeded both precise genome assembly and comprehensive characterization of individual chromosomes for wheat-Thinopyrum introgressions. In the present study, we established a reference karyotype of individual Th. ponticum chromosomes by integrated cytogenetic methods combining non‑denaturing fluorescence in situ hybridization (ND‑FISH) and bulked oligonucleotide pool‑based FISH (Oligo‑FISH) painting. This platform was subsequently applied to cytogenetically analyze the wheat-Th. ponticum partial amphiploid 'Agrotana'. Immunostaining assays revealed that Thinopyrum chromosomes maintain normal centromeric histone localization and exhibit distinct methylation patterns in the wheat background. The group-6 chromosomes of the Thinopyrum species harbor several superior resistance genes, we performed microdissection and sequencing of Th. ponticum 6J[S]S chromosome, generating a genomic resource that enables both comparative genome analysis and targeted functional gene discovery. The specificity of Thinopyrum introgressions in various wheat-Thinopyrum derivatives was further validated by seed storage protein profiles. Collectively, this study establishes an integrated molecular and cytogenetic platform for the accurate identification and assembly of Thinopyrum chromatin, thereby accelerating the targeted introgression and effective deployment of its agronomically valuable traits in wheat improvement programs.

- Lipid droplet-mitochondria mismatch in atherosclerosis: From disrupted lipid routing to persistent inflammation and necrotic core expansion. [Review]Int Immunopharmacol. 2026 Nov 01; 188:117327.II
- Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic lipid-driven inflammatory disease of the arterial wall, and substantial cardiovascular risk persists despite intensive lipid-lowering therapy. Plaque progression depends not only on lipid entry, but also on how vascular wall cells handle intracellular lipids under sustained stress. Lipid droplets (LDs) temporarily sequester excess cholesteryl ester and triacylgly…

- Retention and attrition of community health volunteers in rural Malawi; a mixed-methods study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Engagement of CHVs in community-based programs can be promoted by offering opportunities to serve others, incentives, and flexibility to work on multiple programmes. However, it is also important to address ridicule-making fun or rude comments and limited personal and career development, which act as barriers to the continued engagement of lay health workers.

- A genome-wide screen identifies that PLCG2 restrains lysosomal GCase activity. [Journal Article]Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2026 Jul 07; 123(27):e2514112123.PN
- Mutations in the GBA1 gene, which encodes the lysosomal glucocerebrosidase enzyme GCase, cause the lysosomal storage disorder Gaucher disease and represent the most common genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). These mutations deplete lysosomal GCase activity and cause accumulation of GCase substrate, glucosylceramide, and its pathological metabolite, glucosylsphingosine. Impaired GCas…

- I did it my way: the origins of lipid droplet heterogeneity. [Review]Curr Opin Cell Biol. 2026 Aug; 101:102665.CO
- Intracellular lipid storage is mediated by lipid droplets. Once considered inert lipid inclusions, these structures are now recognized as ubiquitous, multifunctional organelles at the core of cell biological control of metabolism. Lipid droplet dysfunctions are linked to a range of metabolic diseases including obesity, diabetes, steatohepatitis, and lipodystrophy. Intriguingly, not all lipid drop…

- Structure of the mouse cytoplasmic lattice. [Journal Article]
- The fertilized egg relies almost entirely on maternal stores in the oocyte to ensure the successful initiation of development[1]. The cytoplasmic lattices (CPLs) in mammalian oocytes store maternal-expressed proteins and have an essential role in embryogenesis[2,3]. Impairing multiple CPL members leads to early embryonic arrest, resulting in infertility in mammals. However, the mechanism underlyi…
