- Phase 2b Trial of a NaV1.8 Inhibitor for Acute Pain. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: LTG-001 led to significantly greater reductions in pain scores than placebo over the course of 48 hours after abdominoplasty. (Funded by Latigo Biotherapeutics; LTG-001-010 ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT07102459.).

- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Acetaminophen [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- Acetaminophen is a good choice for analgesia, and fever reduction in nursing mothers. Amounts in milk are much less than doses usually given to infants. Adverse effects in breastfed infants appear to be rare.
- Illicit Prescription Opioid Use Among U.S. Firefighters. [Journal Article]
- Firefighters are vulnerable to opioid misuse given the adverse effects their occupation has on mental and physical health. Yet there are limited data on opioid misuse within this population. This study examined the prevalence of illicit prescription opioid use among a nationally representative sample of U.S. firefighters and factors related to opioid misuse. Data were collected through reliable q…

- Postoperative Opioid Use in Pediatric Inguinal Orchiopexy. [Journal Article]J Pediatr Health Care. 2025 Nov-Dec; 39(6):865-870.JP
- CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found that increasing age, lack of acetaminophen use, and preferred language of English were associated with increased postoperative opioid use. In addition, while race/ethnicity was not associated with opioid use, patient language preference for English in this Hispanic-majority population was associated with increased opioid use. The findings of this study highlight the importance of patient education and effective communication to limit opioid use and prescription.

- The Association of Preoperative Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen With Total Opioid Requirement, and Pain Experience in Children Undergoing Adenotonsillectomy. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Pre-operative hydrocodone with acetaminophen was associated with improved outcomes with respect to PACU pain experience and time to discharge. The total OME increase was limited to the pre-operative HA dose.

- Minimal Sedation Use for Laceration Repair in the Pediatric Emergency Department. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Minimal sedation agents allow for successful facial laceration repair in children and AEs were rarely reported. The quality of sedation with these agents was not studied but would be beneficial for future studies.

- Limiting Narcotic Utilization Following Ankle Fracture Surgery. [Journal Article]J Surg Orthop Adv. 2025; 34(1):23-25.JS
- This study assessed whether multimodal pain modalities are effective at decreasing narcotic utilization following ankle fracture surgery. A retrospective chart review of opioid-naive patients aged 18 - 65 undergoing ankle fracture surgery was performed. Patients were prescribed a multimodal pain regimen of acetaminophen, ibuprofen, gabapentin, tramadol, and two sealed envelopes each containing a …
- A new prescribing strategy combined with multimodal analgesics reduces unused opioid doses: a prospective observational study. [Journal Article]Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol. 2025 Sep; 140(3):277-282.OS
- CONCLUSIONS: By combining medications with anti-inflammatory properties, long-acting local anesthesia, and a unique prescribing practice, we were able to achieve satisfactory pain control and limit leftover opiate use. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol YEAR;VOL:page range).

- Suzetrigine, a Nonopioid Na V 1.8 Inhibitor for Treatment of Moderate-to-severe Acute Pain: Two Phase 3 Randomized Clinical Trials. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: As compared with placebo, suzetrigine reduced moderate-to-severe acute pain over 48 h after abdominoplasty or bunionectomy. Pain reduction with suzetrigine was similar to that with hydrocodone bitartrate/acetaminophen. Suzetrigine was associated with adverse events that were mild to moderate in severity.

- Childhood sexual trauma and opioid use among older adults living with HIV. [Journal Article]
- Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to substance use and substance use disorders in adulthood. However, there have been limited studies examining the relationship between CSA and opioid use among older adults living with HIV (OALH). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the association between CSA and opioid use among OALH (n = 91). Data were obtained from an HIV clinic popul…

- Patient Satisfaction with Nonopioid Postoperative Analgesia in Head and Neck Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: In the postoperative population for outpatient head and neck surgeries, there was no significant difference in patient satisfaction and pain control between the opioid and nonopioid arms. Providers should discuss opioid-sparing regimens preoperatively with patients and describe them as effective in providing adequate pain control without a significant impact on patient's perception of care.

- Clinical and surgical factors associated with opioid refill rates following septorhinoplasty. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights factors that surgeons should consider when prescribing opioids after septorhinoplasty. Twelve tablets of an opioid are likely sufficient for the majority of patients, but if osteotomies are performed or the patient has a history of prior opioid use, more may be indicated to avoid the need for refills. Additional narcotics are not necessary for an open approach or for patients in which auricular cartilage is needed.

- Recreational marijuana laws and the misuse of prescription opioids: Evidence from National Survey on Drug Use and Health microdata. [Journal Article]
- Several studies have concluded that legalizing medical marijuana can reduce deaths from opioid overdoses. Drawing on micro data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a survey uniquely suited to assessing patterns of substance use, we examine the relationship between recreational marijuana laws (RMLs) and the misuse of prescription opioids. Using a standard difference-in-differences (DD…
