Carbon Dioxide

General

Synonym/Acronym:
CO2 combining power, CO2, Tco2.

Common Use:
To assess the effect of total carbon dioxide levels on respiratory and metabolic acid-base balance.

Specimen:
Serum (1 mL) collected in a red- or tiger-top tube, plasma (1 mL) collected in a green-top (lithium or sodium heparin) tube; or whole blood (1 mL) collected in a green-top (lithium or sodium heparin) tube or heparinized syringe.

Normal Findings:
(Method: Colorimetry, enzyme assay, or Pco2 electrode)

 Infant–2 yr13–29 mmol/L
 2 yr–older adult23–29 mmol/L
Whole blood (venous)
 Infant–2 yr18–28 mmol/L
