Common Use:
To assess for preterm infant fetal lung maturity to assist in evaluating for potential diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
Specimen:
Amniotic fluid (10 mL) collected in a sterile amber glass or plastic tube or bottle protected from light.
Normal Findings:
(Method: Thin-layer chromatography)

| Mature (nondiabetic) | Greater than 2:1 in the presence of phosphatidyl glycerol |
| Borderline | 1.5 to 1.9:1 |
| Immature | Less than 1.5:1 |
