Lecithin/Sphingomyelin Ratio

General

Synonym/Acronym:
L/S ratio.

Common Use:
To assess for preterm infant fetal lung maturity to assist in evaluating for potential diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

Specimen:
Amniotic fluid (10 mL) collected in a sterile amber glass or plastic tube or bottle protected from light.

Normal Findings:
(Method: Thin-layer chromatography)

L/S Ratio
Mature (nondiabetic)Greater than 2:1 in the presence of phosphatidyl glycerol
Borderline1.5 to 1.9:1
ImmatureLess than 1.5:1
