| |
You may also use the PDA
section if you wish to install the most recent version of Harrison's
Practice onto your principal computer, a secondary computer,
or a new handheld device.
To begin, click the PDA link in the toolbar and look to
the "PDA Software" section. Click on Download Software.
Follow the on-screen instructions. The screens presented will vary
depending on your PDA's operating system. After hitting the
Download button, you may be prompted to designate if you
want to download the file directly or save to disk. For easy installation,
select "save to disk"; and then click OK.
You will be prompted to save the Harrisons_Practice.exe file to
a location. The file will default to save in the last folder you
used for a download. If you want to save the file to a different
location, you need to specify it. It may be easiest to create a
folder named Harrison's Practice and designate that as
the location for the file.
When you have designated the location, click Save. This
will initiate the download of the Harrisons_practice.exe file. A
status bar will follow the progress of the download. Depending on
your Internet connection, you may need to allow a few minutes for
the download to finish.
When the file has been downloaded, click Continue.
Installing Harrisons_Practice.exe
Find the Harrisons_Practice.exe file on your hard disk and double-click
on it. Follow the on-screen prompts, closing all applications and
agreeing to the license agreement. This version will install over
your previous version, preserving your present settings and Subscriptions.
When the installation is complete, a new HTML page with instructions
for completing the upgrade will launch.
Make sure you have an active Internet connection. Next, place your
handheld in its cradle and press the Sync button. If you are upgrading
Harrison's Practice rather than installing it, you will
return to the login page when the synchronization is complete.
If you are installing Harrison's Practice for the first
time rather than upgrading, you must synchronize a second time and
enter the serial number from the "Welcome to Harrison's
Practice" e-mail that was sent to you during registration.
When this second synchronization completes, you will return to the
login screen.
Begin at the "PDA Software" section on the lefthand side
of the page. Click the Download Software link. From here,
follow the on-screen prompts to download the most recent version
of the software. |

| Search Content |
| |
You can search Harrison's Practice
from any screen within the application. Enter your desired search
term in the box labeled Search Harrison's Practice
and click the Search button. |
| |
| Advanced Search |
| |
The Harrison's Practice search
mechanism supports searching techniques which involve changing query
terms to provide a wider range of searching options. For example,
you can perform:
Wildcard Searches: Single and Multiple Character
To perform a single character wildcard search, use the
"?" symbol in place of a single character. The search
then looks for all terms that match the word with the single character
replaced. For example, to search for long and lung,
use: l?ng.
Multiple character wildcard searches look for
results which include your search term, plus 0 or more characters.
Place an asterisk after your query term to perform this type of
search. For example, to search for long, longer
or longest, you would use: long*
Wildcard searches can also be placed in the middle of a term. For
instance: l*ng.
Boolean Searches
A Boolean Search combines search terms through the use of specific
connecting words called operators. Harrison’s Practice supports:
"AND", "+", OR, NOT and "-" as Boolean
operators. Boolean search operators must be in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
The most frequently used Boolean operators are “AND”
and “OR”.
Example 1: The default operator is "OR".
If you do not enter any operator between search terms, "OR"
is used. For example, entering "heart lungs" will search
for single documents where either the term "heart" or
"lung" appears.
Example 2: The AND operator will find documents
where both search terms exist in a single document. For example,
entering "heart AND lungs" will find results containing
only BOTH "heart" and "lungs" in a single document. |

| Content Search
Results |
| |
A search performed from anywhere
within Harrison's Practice brings you to the search results
screen.
Your results will be listed in one of two categories: Harrison's
Book or Harrison's Practice. To the left of each
entry you will find an icon indicating the resource in which the
search result was found. |
| |
| Elements of
Archive |
| |
Harrison's Practice on
the Web consists of a number of interlinking components that allow
you to view and organize records saved from your handheld. |
| |
| Viewing Records
|
| |
Records saved from your handheld
appear in your Archive with links to more in-depth information.
Preceding each entry you will find an icon which indicates the source
from which the record came: Harrison's Practice or
Harrison's Book.
To return to the section from which you saved a particular record
(in either Harrison's Practice or Harrison's
Book), simply click the link at the end of the record entry.
|
| |
| Managing Records
|
| |
Records are displayed in the "Record
Display" window. The default view is of your "Unfiled"
records; however, you can view records in a different folder or
for a particular date (see below).
Records may be content records that you viewed on your handheld
or saved from the Chapter View on the Web using the Save to Archive
link. The default view for your Archive shows your
most recent activity, listed by date. If you decide to keep a record,
and then synchronize your handheld, it will appear in your Archive.
Check the box to the left of each record to select it. You can then
"File" or "Delete" using the buttons in the
"Record Manager". These functions can be performed on
multiple records simultaneously.
NOTE: Records are deleted when you click
"delete". You will not be prompted to confirm or be able
to undelete records. |
| |
| Managing Folders |
| |
The Folder Manager is located
to the left of the Record Display and contains two sections.
"View" allows you to switch from folder to folder. The
active folder is designated by the "Open folder" icon;
to open another folder simply click on its name.
The Manage section allows you to perform such functions
as: Creating new folders, Modifying existing folders (renaming them,
or selecting a new color), and Deleting folders. |
| |
| |
To make
a new folder, click the Create link. Under "Enter
a New Folder Name", type in the name of the new folder. Next,
using the dropdown menu, select a color for the Folder title. If you
do not choose a color, it will default to black. When you have created
the title and/or color, click Submit. If you wish to cancel
the creation of the new Folder, click Cancel. |
| |
| |
To modify
a folder name, click the Modify link in the Folders
section. Select the Folder you wish to change from the drop down menu.
Type in the new name for the Folder. If you want to change the Folder's
color, select one from the dropdown box. Click Modify. If you
wish to cancel the modification, click Cancel. |
| |
| |
To delete a folder, select
Delete from the Folders section. Choose a Folder from the dropdown
menu. If you wish to delete only the Folder and not the Records filed
in it, select the radio button next to "Delete Folder Only".
All of the records will return to your Archive as unfiled records.
If you wish to delete all the records within the Folder, click
on the radio button labeled "Delete Folder + All Records Within".
After you have selected your preference, click Delete. A
dialog box will confirm you want to delete the folder and its records.
If you wish to cancel the deletion, click Cancel. |
| |
| Using the Calendar
|
| |
Your Archive contains
a Calendar display that serves a number of purposes. Beyond displaying
the current date, the calendar also displays the days you saved
records in your Archive. You can select a new date using
the Month and Year drop-down menus or click one of the highlighted
days and the "Content Display" will be redrawn with all
your saved records beginning on that date. |

Harrison's
Practice (HP) offers the opportunity to obtain continuing medical
education (CME) credits -- up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1TM

access these questions either from the web or from your handheld
device.
On the web:
1. Research a clinical question within Harrison's
Practice.
2. From the topic level view of any record,

Settings |
| |
In order to create a more user-friendly
experience, several sections of our program utilize a computer language
called JavaScript. The Subscriptions page, for example, uses JavaScript
to simplify the process required to update your list of journals,
or to switch from one journal to another. It is possible, however,
that your particular institution/computer does not allow or support
JavaScript. If this is the case, simply follow the steps below to
disable the JavaScript function.
To disable Javascript:
Click the Account link in the footer of any page and then
click Settings within the "Modify" section.
You are brought to the Modify Settings screen. Here you have two
choices for your JavaScript setting, "On" and "Off".
The default setting is "On".
Select "Off" and click the Update button. You are returned
to the main Account page where you will receive the confirmation
message, "Your settings have been successfully changed."
As mentioned earlier, while JavaScript makes the user's experience
an easier one, disabling it will not cause you to lose access to
any of our product's features. |
