Abstract
Appropriate genetic counseling depends on a correct diagnosis and on the correct application of the principles of human genetics. Current concepts concerning the classification of malformations and malformation syndromes are considered in an approach to evaluation and counseling that will be useful to the medical professional involved in management of patients with clefts.
