Abstract
This article reviews the current status of the prevention and treatment of hypertension. The need to prevent complications resulting from hypertension is stressed. However, once complications do develop, rehabilitation and secondary prevention is necessary. There is a tremendous need for health education in South Africa regarding complications from hypertension. Programmes for the treatment of hypertension are a major therapeutic challenge.
