One was the known compound 5-carboxy-7-(3",3"-dimethylallyl)-2-(1'-hydroxy-1', 5'-dimethylhex-4'-enyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (1), while the other was assigned as the new diol 2 (3-(2',3'-dihydroxy-3', 7'-dimethyloct-6'-enyl)-4-hydroxy-5-(3",3"-dimethylallyl)benzoic acid, myricoidiol). These compounds were initially characterized through analysis of their spectroscopic data and comparison with some simpler synthetic analogues led to the final structure assignment for diol 2.
