  • Microbes and Alzheimer' disease: lessons from H. pylori and GUT microbiota. [Journal Article]
  • EREur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2019; 23(1):426-430
  • Franceschi F, Ojetti V, … Gasbarrini A
  • CONCLUSIONS: Indeed, bacteria have been shown to affect neurodegeneration by promoting inflammation, inducing molecular mimicry mechanisms and accumulation of Aβ into the brain. These findings open the way for H. pylori eradicating trials and/or GUT microbiota remodulating strategies. Therefore, further studies are now needed in order to test whether antibiotics, pre and/or probiotics may exert a beneficial effect in the prevention of AD.
  • Zyxin: a mechanotransductor to regulate gene expression. [Journal Article]
  • EREur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2019; 23(1):413-425
  • Wang YX, Wang DY, … Guo J
  • CONCLUSIONS: Zyxin is a crucial ingredient of the cellular mechanotransducing system and can modulate the gene expression. Given its clinical relevance, zyxin is also a promising target for the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases. Understanding the role of zyxin in force sensing and gene expression regulating provides a compelling challenge for future biomechanics studies, and offers attractive evidence for zyxin as a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for clinical diseases.
  • Cohort study of electronic cigarette use: safety and effectiveness after 4 years of follow-up. [Journal Article]
  • EREur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2019; 23(1):402-412
  • Flacco ME, Ferrante M, … Manzoli L
  • CONCLUSIONS: After four years, a scarce, non-significant harm reduction was observed among e-cig or dual users. Given the long-lasting health effects of tobacco smoking, the benefits of e-cig use may start being detectable at the next follow-up (six years). The complete switch to e-cig may help tobacco quitters remain abstinent, but e-cig use in addition to tobacco did not increase the likelihood of smoking cessation or reduction.
  • Therapeutic uses of metronidazole and its side effects: an update. [Journal Article]
  • EREur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2019; 23(1):397-401
  • Hernández Ceruelos A, Romero-Quezada LC, … López Contreras L
  • CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic use of metronidazole had increased worldwide. Even though it is widely used, metronidazole has been associated with neurotoxicity and genotoxicity; however, its side effects are not well established. Conversely, its veterinary use is restricted in some countries because of its tumor association. Subsequently, further studies are needed to discover the secure use of metronidazole and describe new usages for this drug.
