  • Exploring the Relationship Between Social Support and Sleep. [Journal Article]
    Health Educ Behav 2019; :1090198119871331Krause N, Rainville G
  • CONCLUSIONS: Instead of merely showing that social support is associated with sleep, our findings take a modest step toward explaining how this relationship arises (i.e., through an increased sense of meaning in life and, in turn, reduced depressive symptoms). This theoretical specificity is helpful for devising interventions to improve sleep habits.
  • Optimism is associated with exceptional longevity in 2 epidemiologic cohorts of men and women. [Journal Article]
    Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2019; 116(37):18357-18362Lee LO, James P, … Kubzansky LD
  • Most research on exceptional longevity has investigated biomedical factors associated with survival, but recent work suggests nonbiological factors are also important. Thus, we tested whether higher optimism was associated with longer life span and greater likelihood of exceptional longevity. Data are from 2 cohorts, women from the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and men from the Veterans Affairs Norm…
  • PM2.5 air pollution and cause-specific cardiovascular disease mortality. [Journal Article]
Int J Epidemiol 2019Hayes RB, Lim C, … Thurston GD
  • CONCLUSIONS: Long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution is associated with ischaemic heart disease and stroke mortality, with excess risks occurring in the range of and below the present US long-term standard for ambient exposure to PM2.5 (12 µg/m3), indicating the need for continued improvements in air pollution abatement for CVD prevention.
  • Functional Comparison of Blood-Stage Plasmodium falciparum Malaria Vaccine Candidate Antigens. [Journal Article]
Front Immunol 2019; 10:1254Illingworth JJ, Alanine DG, … Draper SJ
  • The malaria genome encodes over 5,000 proteins and many of these have also been proposed to be potential vaccine candidates, although few of these have been tested clinically. RH5 is one of the leading blood-stage Plasmodium falciparum malaria vaccine antigens and Phase I/II clinical trials of vaccines containing this antigen are currently underway. Its likely mechanism of action is to elicit ant…
  • Psychometric Evaluation of the Social Isolation Scale in Older Adults. [Journal Article]
    Gerontologist 2019Nicholson NR, Feinn R, … Dixon J
  • Social isolation is known to be detrimental to the health of older adults, yet there is no brief instrument to measure it. The objective wasto describe the psychometric testing of a brief instrument constructed from theoretical underpinnings to measure social isolation in older adults.
