  • Evolutionary medical insights into the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. [Journal Article]
    Evol Med Public Health. 2020; 2020(1):314-322.Crespi B
  • The author apply concepts and tools from evolutionary medicine to understanding the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The pandemic represents a mismatched conflict, with dynamics and pathology apparently driven by three main factors: (i) bat immune systems that rely on low inflammation but high efficacy of interferon-based defenses; (ii) viral tactics that differentially target the human interferon system, le…
  • ACE-inhibitor/calcium antagonist combination: is this the first-choice therapy in arterial hypertension? [Review]
    Minerva Med. 2019 Dec; 110(6):546-554.Taddei S
  • The 2018 ESH/ESC guidelines indicate that the first-choice therapy in the majority of hypertensive patients should be a fixed combination of a drug that blocks the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and a calcium antagonist or a diuretic. Evidence from the meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials, however, indicates that the classes of drugs that block the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone syste…
  • Amlodipine in the Era of New Generation Calcium Channel Blockers. [Review]
    J Assoc Physicians India. 2018 03; 66(3):64-9.Tiwaskar M, Langote A, … Toppo A
  • Amlodipine is a classical drug with varied properties extending from control of blood pressure to as an antianginal and anti atherosclerotic agent. Amlodipine is a longer acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, effective for 24 hours BP control and cause no BP variability. It is a powerful, well-tolerated, and safe antihypertensive agents that is widely used either alone or as a key compo…
  • Lercanidipine and T-type calcium current. [Journal Article]
    Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2018 06; 22(12):4025-4031.Cerbai E, Mugelli A
  • CONCLUSIONS: All CCBs examined in this study showed both T- and L-channel blocking activities and can be differentiated based on their relative affinity. Among tested dihydropyridines, lercanidipine showed the highest T/L selectivity.
  • LiverTox: Clinical and Research Information on Drug-Induced Liver Injury: Calcium Channel Blockers [BOOK]
LiverTox: Clinical and Research Information on Drug-Induced Liver Injury. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: Bethesda (MD)BOOK
  • The calcium channel blockers act by blocking the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle cells during membrane depolarization. Because muscle contraction is largely dependent upon influx of calcium, its inhibition causes relaxation, particularly in arterial beds. Thus, the major effects of the calcium channel blockers are relaxation of vascular and arterial smooth mu…
  • Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Migraine. [Review]
Curr Treat Options Neurol. 2016 Nov; 18(11):48.Merison K, Jacobs H
  • While the diagnosis of migraine in children is generally straightforward, treatment can seem complex with a number of medication choices, many of which are used "off label." Patients with intermittent migraines can often be managed with ibuprofen or naproxen taken as needed. Unfortunately, by the time that children present to our practice, they have often tried these medications without improveme…
  • Treatment of hypertensive patients with diabetes: beyond blood pressure control and focus on manidipine. [Review]
    Future Cardiol. 2016 07; 12(4):435-47.Saiz Satjes M, Martinez-Martin FJ
  • Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors should be considered as the first-line therapy in the treatment of patients with hypertension and diabetes. However, most of the diabetic subjects with hypertension require at least two drugs to achieve blood pressure targets. The ACCOMPLISH trial suggested that the best combination in the treatment of high-risk hypertensive patients should include a renin-angi…
  • Thiazide-like/calcium channel blocker agents: a major combination for hypertension management. [Review]
Am J Cardiovasc Drugs. 2014 Dec; 14(6):423-32.Safar ME, Blacher J
  • In recent years, treatment strategies for hypertension have often focused on combination therapies that include diuretics and renin angiotensin aldosterone system blockers such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers. However, in clinical practice, a significant number of patients do not respond completely to these combination treatments, and long-term reducti…
  • Toxicity of antihypertensives in unintentional poisoning of young children. [Journal Article]
    J Emerg Med. 2014 Aug; 47(2):155-62.Hetterich N, Lauterbach E, … Lauterbach M
  • CONCLUSIONS: In young children with unintentional, single drug exposure to the most popular antihypertensive medication (i.e., metoprolol, bisoprolol, ramipril, enalapril, lisinopril, captopril, candesartan, valsartan, amlodipine, and verapamil), only mild symptoms occurred, and hospital evaluation is not a must. However, children with recent exposure to clonidine or moxonidine should be evaluated at a hospital due to an increased likelihood of poisonings of at least moderate severity.
  • Blood pressure in renal disease: how to accomplish the goal? [Editorial]
    Cardiovasc Ther. 2012 Aug; 30(4):193-8.Robles NR, Hernandez-Gallego R
  • The Avoiding Cardiovascular Events through Combination Therapy in Patients Living with Systolic Hypertension (ACCOMPLISH) trial showed that initial antihypertensive therapy with benazepril plus amlodipine was superior to benazepril plus hydrochlorothiazide in reducing progression of chronic kidney disease as well as cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in renal patients. The renal results of th…
