JNMA J Nepal Med Assoc. 2022 Nov 02; 60(255):969-971.Shrestha GS, Rimal A, … Acharya SP
  • Cardiac myxoma is an infrequent but curable cause of ischemic stroke. There are no guidelines addressing the timing of surgery to excise the tumour or for the use of thrombolysis or thrombectomy. We present a case with an ischemic stroke which was diagnosed to have atrial myxoma. She was planned for surgical excision of the tumour but suffered from a second ischemic stroke while awaiting surgery.…
  • Recurrent Left Atrial Myxoma: The Significance of Active Surveillance. [Case Reports]
    Cureus. 2023 Jan; 15(1):e33990.Tolu-Akinnawo O, Dufera RR, Ramanna N
  • Cardiac myxoma recurrence is uncommon following surgical resection. Recurrence is about 2-3% in familial cases; however, recurrence is uncommon in sporadic cases. Most of the recurrences will occur during the first three to four years. Ten percent of myxomas are of the inherited autosomal dominant disorder called Carney's complex, while the rest appear sporadic. We are reporting a nonfamilial cas…
  • Cerebral Aneurysms Caused by Atrial Myxoma-A Systematic Review of the Literature. [Review]
    J Pers Med. 2022 Dec 21; 13(1)Chojdak-Łukasiewicz J, Budrewicz S, Waliszewska-Prosół M
  • Background: The association between cerebral aneurysms and left atrial myxoma is known but rare. We described its pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic findings and treatment using a systemic review of the literature. Methods: MEDLINE via PubMed was searched for articles published until August 2022 using the keywords "atrial myxoma", "cardiac myxoma" and "cerebral aneurysm". Results: In…
  • Cardiac hemangioma presenting as a primary cardiac tumor. [Journal Article]
    Cardiooncology. 2023 Jan 17; 9(1):3.Berdica L, Kola E, … Alimehmeti M
  • Cardiac hemangiomas are very rare benign cardiac tumors. They can present at any age and clinical presentation varies according to location and size. We encountered an 87-year-old woman with a left atrial hemangioma clinically diagnosed as cardiac myxoma. Histopathological examination revealed that it was a cavernous-type hemangioma Left atrial hemangiomas, especially those attached to the left a…
  • Global Transient Amnesia as the Predominant Symptom of Cardiac Myxoma: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
    Am J Case Rep. 2023 Jan 03; 24:e938221.Shrestha P, Obholz J, … Adio B
  • BACKGROUND The most common neurological symptoms from cardiac myxoma-induced stroke include territories of middle cerebral arteries, rendering posterior stroke less common. Although transient global amnesia usually has a benign prognosis, amnesia in the setting of concerning cerebellar symptoms should raise the suspicion for posterior circulation involvement. These benign-appearing symptoms can b…
  • Left atrial mass found on cardiac ultrasound leading to emergent thrombectomy. [Case Reports]
    Respir Med Case Rep. 2023; 41:101800.van der Rijst N, Sinha T, … Ajmeri A
  • Atrial myxomas, though the most common primary cardiac neoplasm, remain a rare disease occurring in about 0.03% of the population. While clinically benign, they are considered functionally malignant as they can cause life-threatening embolic events. Here we present a patient with a high-risk intermediate pulmonary embolism where bedside ultrasound revealed significant right ventricular dysfunctio…
  • Left atrial myxoma: an unusual cause of pre-syncope and symptomatic bradycardia. [Case Reports]
    BMC Cardiovasc Disord. 2022 12 30; 22(1):576.Vongbunyong K, Sinfield S, … Kern M
  • CONCLUSIONS: Atrial myxomas are a rare cause of pre-syncope and symptomatic bradycardia. It is important to have a clinical suspicion for atrial myxomas given early diagnosis and surgical intervention are key in improving the prognosis of these patients. This case also highlights the importance of taking into account the source of the myxoma's blood supply in relationship to other cardiac structures, and further correlating these findings with clinical symptoms.
  • Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor: A rare entity with a complex diagnosis. [Case Reports]
    Rev Port Cardiol. 2022 Dec 14 [Online ahead of print]Domínguez-Massa C, Doñate-Bertolín L, … Hornero-Sos F
  • Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a neoplasm with uncertain behavior. We describe a case in a 66-year-old female who underwent resection of a left atrial tumor suspected to be a cardiac myxoma which was subsequently diagnosed as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. After three years' follow-up the patient underwent a second operation to remove tumoral occurrence in the right atrium, diagnos…
  • Cardiac myxoma with atypical cell population mimicking malignancy - a diagnostic pitfall. [Case Reports]
    Cardiovasc Pathol. 2022 Dec 01; 63:107511.Stejskal V, Steiner I, Vobornik M
  • Herein, a case of a 45-year-old woman is reported with left atrial myxoma showing unique histological findings mimicking malignancy. For 3 months before surgery, the patient suffered from a long-standing fever of unknown etiology, malaise and weight loss; she had no history of malignancy. The CT scan revealed a tumorous mass in the left atrium. Grossly, the tumor had a smooth rounded surface with…
  • Routine endoscopic robotic cardiac tumor resection using an 8-mm working port and percutaneous cannulation. [Journal Article]
J Card Surg. 2022 Dec; 37(12):4803-4807.Rosen JL, Yost CC, … Guy TS
  • CONCLUSIONS: In our study, the robotic platform facilitated safe and effective cardiac tumor excision. Our results highlight the efficacy of 8-mm port sizing and the concurrent use of other minimally invasive techniques, including percutaneous cannulation, in this patient population. In general, patients prefer the least invasive treatment option available. Our findings emphasize the importance of training cardiac surgeons to perform robotic procedures using the least invasive means possible to provide patients with various options for their treatment.
  • Tumor embolism and acute arterial occlusion: A systematic review. [Review]
Surg Open Sci. 2022 Oct; 10:216-222.Hussain SMA
  • CONCLUSIONS: Lung cancer and atrial myxoma were the most common sources for tumor embolism. Acute stroke was the most common presentation. This is treated with antiplatelets or anticoagulation as well as chemotherapy and resection of primary tumor. Early revascularisation can prevent severe complications such as death, paralysis, heart failure and limb loss in selected cases of tumor embolism.
  • Infected Left Atrial Myxoma Presenting Without Bacterial Growth on Blood Cultures: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
J Chest Surg. 2022 Nov 09 [Online ahead of print]Kim SA, Pyo W, Jung SH
  • Although cardiac myxoma is one of the most common types of benign cardiac tumors, infected cardiac myxoma is very infrequent. The diagnosis of infected cardiac myxoma may be challenging because the presenting symptoms are non-specific and established management guidelines are lacking. This report describes a 39-year-old woman with a 5-month history of uncontrolled fever, chills, and myalgia who w…
  • Cardiac myxoma shedding leads to lower extremity arterial embolism: A case report. [Case Reports]
    World J Clin Cases. 2022 Oct 16; 10(29):10606-10613.Meng XH, Xie LS, … Fang X
  • CONCLUSIONS: Although CM is rare, it may be considered as the source of embolism in patients with acute limb ischemia. Repeated loss of thrombus on the tumor and its surface may lead to repeated embolism of peripheral vessels. Cardiac ultrasound is helpful for early diagnosis. Here, we use this case report to highlight left CM as an important cause of acute limb ischemia and to report our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of lower limb arterial embolism caused by CM detachment.
  • Neonatal Myxomas: Case Report and Literature Review. [Case Reports]
