Hibernation is characterized by marked suppression of renal function. Natriuretic peptides (NPs) are involved in the regulation of renal function. However, the role of NPs in the renal function during hibernation remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the distribution patterns of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) in Anatolian ground squirrel (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) kidneys during pre-hibernation and hibernation periods. Cortical proximal tubules showed weak ANP immunoreactivity, with moderate staining on the brush border during the pre-hibernation period. In the hibernation period, moderate ANP immunoreactivity was seen in cortical proximal tubules, with very weak reaction in hibernating cortical distal tubules, medullary proximal and collecting tubules. Cortical proximal and distal tubules of both periods had strong and weak BNP immunoreactivity, respectively. Medullary proximal, distal and Henle's loop segments showed very weak BNP immunoreactivity during pre-hibernation. Medullary distal, proximal and collecting tubules and Henle's loop segments had moderate staining during hibernation. In both periods, cortical proximal tubules displayed strong immunoreactivity to CNP. Distal tubules had moderate CNP staining during pre-hibernation, albeit weak staining during hibernation. Medullary proximal tubules exhibited moderate to strong immunoreactivity during pre-hibernation. Medullary distal and proximal tubules had weak and moderate CNP staining, respectively, during pre-hibernation. In both periods, Henle's loop segments displayed moderate CNP immunoreactivity. Glomeruli had similar weak ANP, BNP and CNP staining in both periods. These results suggest that heterothermic conditions differently affected the expression of NPs in the squirrel kidney. This different expression of NPs may contribute to the renal adaptation during hibernation.

It has been generally accepted that the morphology, physiology and biochemistry of plants are differentially affected by low-dose gamma ionizing radiation that is associated with the tolerance of plant species under biotic/abiotic stress. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the protective role of low gamma irradiation pretreatment against salt and drought stress. For this aim, irradiated (100 Gy) and non-irradiated seeds of common vetch were cultured on an MS medium with separate addition of concentrations of NaCl (100 mM) and PEG-6000 (100 g/l) under in vitro conditions. Morpho-physio-biochemical analyses were carried out on 14-day-old seedlings. The findings of this study clearly show that exposure to gamma irradiation pretreatment (100 Gy), alone or in combination with salt stress and drought stress, led to significant increases (p < .01) in dry matter accumulation, CAT, SOD and APX activities, proline contents and decreases in relative water content. However, alone, gamma irradiation pretreatment caused increased chlorophyll contents while decreasing MDA contents. Overall, these results suggested that low-dose gamma irradiation pretreatment can enhance the tolerance of common vetch seedlings against stress due to salt and drought.

Natriuretic peptide (NP) family is composed of atrial, brain and C-type NP (NPPA, NPPB and NPPC). Here, we aimed to investigate NP expression in testis and epididymis during postnatal development. NPPA expression was observed in gonocytes at prepubertal period but in only spermatocytes in pachytene and leptotene/zygotene stage at pubertal period. In prepubertal and pubertal periods, we detected NPPB expression in only Leydig cells. However, NPPC expression was detected in all of the gonocytes and Sertoli cells, spermatocytes and some interstitial cells in prepubertal and pubertal periods. In postpubertal and mature periods, NPPA and NPPB staining were detected in Leydig cells, elongated and round spermatids but not in spermatogonia and spermatocytes. However, we observed NPPC expression in all cells of the seminiferous tubules and Leydig cells in the postpubertal and mature periods. Epididymal epithelium showed intense NPPC expression during postnatal period but weak NPPA and NPPB expression in prepubertal and pubertal periods. The expression of three NPs in the testis significantly increased after puberty. In conclusion, puberty had a significant effect on NP expression in testis. Unlike NPPA and NPPB, expression of NPPC in all cells of the seminiferous tubule suggests that NPPC is effective in each step of spermatogenesis.

Carotid artery kinking is a frequent finding in duplex ultrasonography. However, isolated morphological changes without significant carotid stenosis are rarely symptomatic. Neck pain is a rare symptom in patients with carotid artery kinks. The vascular etiology in patients with persistent neck pain is usually overlooked. A 58-year-old female patient with chronic neck pain presented to our clinic. Following multidisciplinary team review, the symptoms were found due to the kinking of the internal carotid artery. In this report, we present the clinical presentation of the patient with the kinking of the internal carotid artery without stenosis, surgical management of the pathology, and a brief literature review.

Anatolian ground squirrel (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) is a true hibernator. This animal transiently reduces pulmonary function during hibernation. Continuance of pulmonary function is very important to survive ground squirrels during the hibernation. Natriuretic peptides may be key players in the modulation of pulmonary hemostasis. However, NPs' role in pulmonary function during hibernation remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the localization and distribution of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) in squirrel lungs during pre-hibernation and hibernation periods using immunohistochemistry. Our immunohistochemical data indicate that ANP, BNP, and CNP were produced by the mucosal epithelium of terminal and respiratory bronchioles, smooth muscle cells in the lamina propria of terminal bronchioles and vascular smooth muscle cells, alveolar type II cells, and macrophages. ANP immunoreactivity was weaker than BNP and CNP immunoreactivities in these cells. The results also demonstrate that the number of ANP, BNP and CNP positive alveolar type II cells tended to increase, although statistically non-significant, during the hibernation period, but the expression of NPs in other pulmonary cells is unaffected by hibernation. This study firstly investigates ANP, BNP and CNP distribution in the Anatolian ground squirrel lung. However, further studies are required to dissect their functional roles during the hibernation.

Advanced diagnostic systems and healthcare screening programs enabled increased diagnosis of congenital cardiovascular anomalies, including variations in coronary arteries. Single coronary artery is a rare congenital cardiovascular malformation in which all three main coronary arteries originate from a single coronary trunk. In this report, we present a patient with single coronary ostium giving rise to the left and right coronary artery systems, which was diagnosed incidentally with coronary computerized tomography and confirmed with conventional angiography. The aims of this research were to examine the effect of pH on extraction of proteins from sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) kernels, and to investigate the functional properties of the resulting protein concentrate. The optimum pH values for the protein extraction and isoelectric precipitation were determined as 10.0 and 4.5, respectively. The protein concentrate contained 4.03 ± 0.16% moisture, 3.31 ± 0.17% ash, 2.94 ± 0.36% carbohydrate, 1.93 ± 0.16% lipid, and 80.48 ± 2.38% protein. Water holding capacity, oil holding capacity and the least gelling concentration of the protein concentrate were 2.42 ± 0.09 g water/g, 1.73 ± 0.17 g oil/g and 8%, respectively. Results showed that emulsifying activity and stability indices, foaming capacity and stability of protein concentrate were 38.91 ± 2.50 m2/g, 37.49 ± 2.41 min, 35.00 ± 3.54% and 71.80 ± 7.25% (after 30 min), respectively. The functional and chemical properties of the protein concentrate indicate that it may find application as functional ingredient for various food products.
