  • Population screening for atrial fibrillation by student pharmacists at health fairs. [Journal Article]
J Am Pharm Assoc (2003). 2020 Jan 31 [Online ahead of print]Anderson JR, Hunter T, … Bleske BE
  • CONCLUSIONS: Student pharmacist-driven health fairs were shown to be feasible models to screen for AF and were effective in providing AF education to the public. Student pharmacists also cultivated a clinical skill that is transferable to their future practice setting, including the community pharmacy setting. Additional studies are needed to assess whether population-based real-time assessment and detection of AF can reduce the risk of stroke in individuals with previously undetected AF.
  • Comparative Outcomes of Treatment Initiation With Brand vs. Generic Warfarin in Older Patients. [Journal Article]
Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2020 Jun; 107(6):1334-1342.Desai RJ, Gopalakrishnan C, … Gagne JJ
  • The anticoagulant response to warfarin, a narrow therapeutic index drug, increases with age, which may make older patients susceptible to adverse outcomes resulting from small differences in bioavailability between generic and brand products. Using US Medicare claims linked to electronic medical records from two large hospitals in Boston, we designed a cohort study of ≥ 65-year-old patients. Pati…
  • Anticoagulant Utilization and Direct Oral Anticoagulant Prescribing in Patients with Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation. [Journal Article]
    Can J Hosp Pharm. 2019 Nov-Dec; 72(6):428-434.Shum P, Klammer G, … Barry A
  • CONCLUSIONS: At the study hospital, most patients with NVAF and CHADS-65 score of at least 1 had a discharge prescription for DOAC. Patient characteristics appeared to be similar between the warfarin and DOAC groups. For a notable proportion of patients who received a DOAC, the dosage was incorrect. Appropriate prescribing of oral anticoagulants could be further improved by education for prescribers and involvement of hospital pharmacists.
  • Postoperative atrial fibrillation is associated with higher scores on predictive indices. [Journal Article]
    J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg. 2019 06; 157(6):2279-2286.Burgos LM, Seoane L, … Navia D
  • CONCLUSIONS: The POAF, CHA2DS2-VASc, and HATCH scoring systems showed good discrimination and calibration to predict postoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Among them, the CHA2DS2-Vasc score presented the best discriminative ability for postoperative atrial fibrillation and has the advantage of being easy to calculate.
  • Use of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores to predict prognosis after stroke. [Journal Article]
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2020 Jan - Feb; 176(1-2):85-91.Kusznir Vitturi B, José Gagliardi R
  • CONCLUSIONS: CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were both associated with stroke outcomes regardless of atrial fibrillation. These scores can be useful tools for the prognosis stratification of a patient with an ischemic stroke.
