The EU human biomonitoring initiative, HBM4EU, aims to co-ordinate and advance human biomonitoring (HBM) across Europe. Within its remit, the project is gathering new, policy relevant, EU-wide data on occupational exposure to relevant priority chemicals and developing new approaches for occupational biomonitoring. In this manuscript, the hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] study design is presented as the first example of this HBM4EU approach. This study involves eight European countries and plans to recruit 400 workers performing Cr(VI) surface treatment e.g. electroplating or stainless steel welding activities. The aim is to collect new data on current occupational exposure to Cr(VI) in Europe and to test new methods for Cr biomonitoring, specifically the analysis of Cr(VI) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and Cr in red blood cells (RBC) in addition to traditional urinary total Cr analyses. Furthermore, exposure data will be complemented with early biological effects data, including genetic and epigenetic effects. Personal air samples and wipe samples are collected in parallel to help informing the biomonitoring results. We present standard operational procedures (SOPs) to support the harmonized methodologies for the collection of occupational hygiene and HBM samples in different countries.

Co-pyrolysis of straws with manures has been found effective to mitigate heavy metal risks in manure-derived biochars. This study further investigated co-pyrolysis strategy on the levels, species and risks of metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cd) carried by manure-based biochars through co-pyrolyzing swine manure (SM) and corn straw (CS) with different mixture ratios (1:0, 0:1, 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3, w/w) at 300 ℃, 500 ℃ and 700 ℃. The total heavy metals in SM biochars were significantly reduced by CS addition except when SM/CS ratio was 3:1 at 300 ℃. Notably, CS addition increased stable Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd, but simultaneously mobilized part of Ni, Zn, Cu and Pb in SM biochars, especially at higher CS ratio and higher temperature. Co-pyrolysis converted less stable Cd to more stable Cd at all pyrolysis conditions, with higher CS ratio and higher temperature more effective. Overall, higher temperature (700 ℃) and higher addition ratio of CS (SM/CS 1:3) were more favorable for mitigating the potential ecological index of biochar-bearing Cd, Cu and Zn, the dominating risky contributor to SM biochars, hence more effective to mitigate the overall environmental risks of heavy metals in the derived SM biochars.

The effect of fluoride as an ongoing topic has attracted much attentions due to the decline in overall human fertility worldwide. However, whether fluorine causes a temporary stimulus or permanent damage to the male reproductive system, as well as the mechanism of fluoride influencing spermatogenesis remained unclear. 48 adult male rats were randomly divided into four groups (twelve each). Control group received the distilled water, while the other three groups were treated with 25, 50, 100 mg/L NaF via drinking water for 8 weeks. Six rats from each group were selected randomly to detect the levels of various indices related to spermatogenesis. The remaining rats were given only distilled water and left for recovery of a period of 2 weeks. Results showed that the levels of serum CK, ALP, CHE, BUN, UA, and Cr, testis morphology and the ultrastructure of sperm acrosome and chromatoid body (CB) were significantly changed by fluoride. Interestingly, the elongated spermatid counts, spermatids elongation ratio, and mRNA expressions of Prm1/2 and MIWI, TDRD1, TDRD 6, TDRD7, PABP, and Hsp72 related to CB decreased markedly in fluoride treatment groups compared to the control. Furthermore, the expression levels of DDX25 and associated regulatory proteins like CRM1, HMG2, H4, TP2, and PGK2 were down-regulated by fluoride. After 2-weeks withdrawal period, out of the 19 altered spermatogenesis indicators, 15 indicators in 100 mg/L group and 3 indicators in 50 mg/L group still exhibited a significant change, while none showed change in 25 mg/L group. These results proved that the reversibility of fluoride toxicity is dose-dependent on the male reproductive system. Meanwhile, fluoride caused unrestored arrest during the haploid period of spermatogenesis, where reduced DDX25 and associated regulatory proteins play a crucial role in this process, which could provide the underlying insights to the toxic mechanism of fluoride induced male reproductive toxicity.

In order to investigate the influence of the static electricity on the measurement using passive radon detector, detectors were charged at the surface of chamber and its CR-39 elements respectively on purpose before the exposure in this study. The results of in-chamber experiments revealed that the static electricity would lead to critical influence on measurement especially when the CR-39 elements were negatively charged. The static charge would remain for several ten hours, which result in more significant influence on the short-term measurement.

- CONCLUSIONS: Urine Cu, Zn, Sb, Cd, Cr and V were independently associated with increased cardiovascular risk at levels relevant for the general population of Spain. Urine metals in the mixture were also jointly associated with cardiovascular incidence, with Cd and Sb being the most important components of the mixture.

This study represents the first systematic investigation of the spatial distribution of different chemical elements in the soil of the city of Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. For this purpose, surface soil samples from 234 locations were analyzed to determine the content of 20 major and trace elements (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, V and Zn) to assess the size of the areas eventually affected by heavy metal pollution. All samples were analyzed by atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-AES). Cluster and factor analysis (R-mode) were applied in order to show the associations of chemical elements. Four factors were obtained: Factor 1 (K, Na, Ba and Al), Factor 2 (Cr, Ni, Mg and Fe), Factor 3 (Zn, Cd and Cu) and Factor 4 (Sr and Ca). It was established that the distribution of the associations of F1, F2 and F4 are mostly as a result of the complex geology and lithology of the region while the association of F3 represents an anthropogenic association.
