  • Successful Treatment of Urticarial Vasculitis in a Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus With Rituximab. [Case Reports]
    Clin Med Insights Arthritis Musculoskelet Disord. 2020; 13:1179544120967374.Alharbi S, Sanchez-Guerrero J
  • Urticarial vasculitis is an eruption of erythematous wheals that clinically resemble urticaria but histologically show changes of leukocytoklastic vasculitis. In association with connective tissue disease it is most commonly seen complicating Systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) and, less often, Sjogren's syndrome. Here, we report a 25-year-old woman who developed SLE in 1998. In May 2013 she presen…
  • A case report of hydroxychloroquine-induced auditory and visual hallucination. [Journal Article]
Int J Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2020 Nov 16 [Online ahead of print]Ganjei Z, Bahmani K
  • CONCLUSIONS: Previous studies and the lack of another explanation for the patient's hallucinations imply a strong correlation between hydroxychloroquine and hallucinations. The mechanism of these side effects has not been fully elucidated. However, this side effect has only been reported in cases of connective tissue diseases. As currently hydroxychloroquine is widely used in the treatment of COVID-19 and other diseases, its potential risk of psychiatric complications should be considered in clinical practice.
  • Oxidative DNA Damage Accelerates Skin Inflammation in Pristane-Induced Lupus Model. [Journal Article]
    Front Immunol. 2020; 11:554725.Tumurkhuu G, Chen S, … Arditi M
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease in which type I interferons (IFN) play a key role. The IFN response can be triggered when oxidized DNA engages the cytosolic DNA sensing platform cGAS-STING, but the repair mechanisms that modulate this process and govern disease progression are unclear. To gain insight into this biology, we interrogated the role of o…
  • Progression of Discoid Lupus to Lupus Panniculitis: An Unexplained and Likely Underreported Phenomenon. [Case Reports]
    Cureus. 2020 Aug 20; 12(8):e9904.White C, Baltazar D, Miller R
  • Lupus erythematosus is a multiorgan disorder with a wide variance of clinical presentations. Disease processes are generally divided into systemic or cutaneous categories, with cutaneous findings being further subdivided into acute, subacute, and chronic variants. The chronic form of cutaneous lupus itself has multiple subsets. We present the case of a young woman who developed two forms of chron…
  • StatPearls: Jessner Lymphocytic Infiltration Of The Skin [BOOK]
StatPearls. StatPearls Publishing: Treasure Island (FL) Williams Carla T. CT NCH Healthcare System and UCF College of Medicine Harrington Douglas W. DW Mayo Clinic BOOK
  • Jessner lymphocytic infiltration of the skin (JLIS) is the term used to describe a rare, benign cutaneous condition characterized by papular or plaque-like eruptions that commonly involve sun-exposed areas such as face, neck, and trunk.[1] The eruptions are erythematous, non-scaly, and can also be annular. This disease has an indolent course, lasting weeks to months, and as the eruptions expand p…
  • Cutaneous vasculitis in SLE. [Journal Article]
    Lupus Sci Med. 2020 09; 7(1)Kallas R, Goldman D, Petri MA
  • CONCLUSIONS: Cutaneous vasculitis is frequent (17.3%) and often recurrent (35%). African-Americans are at higher risk of developing cutaneous small vessel vasculitis than Caucasians. Clinical presentations such as myositis and haematological manifestations are predictors of cutaneous vasculitis development. The presence of cutaneous vasculitis is associated with increased organ damage.
  • Unilateral facial erythematous patch as the presenting sign of systemic lupus erythematosus. [Journal Article]
Lupus. 2020 Dec; 29(14):1968-1970.Ha DL, Lee GW, … Kim MB
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can have many cutaneous manifestations including malar rash, discoid rash or oral ulcer. Isolated unilateral involvement of face is uncommon in SLE. It lacks typical clinical features of LE, and may impose a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Herein we report a case of 62-year-old woman presenting with a 2-year history of …
  • How to Optimize Trichoscopy for Evaluation of Scalp Vessels. [Journal Article]
    Skin Appendage Disord. 2020 Jul; 6(4):216-219.Kłosowicz A, Alsalhi W, Tosti A
  • CONCLUSIONS: In the light of these findings, diascopy of vascular changes in hair loss patients might provide additional clues for a proper diagnosis, especially in differentiating scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and discoid lupus erythematosus.
  • Apremilast in dermatology: A review of literature. [Journal Article]
    Dermatol Ther. 2020 Sep 02 [Online ahead of print]Nassim D, Alajmi A, … Pehr K
  • Apremilast is an orally administered small molecule that specifically inhibits the phosphodiesterase-4 enzyme and modulates the immune system by increasing the levels of intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and inhibiting IL-2 & 8, interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production. It is FDA approved for the treatment of psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and oral ulcers of Behc…
  • A Rare Presentation of Concurrent Onset and Coexistence of Generalized Lichen Planus and Psoriasis in a Child. [Case Reports]
    Indian Dermatol Online J. 2020 Jul-Aug; 11(4):616-618.Sandhu S, Sinha P, … Bhatt S
  • Independently, psoriasis and lichen planus (LP) are common inflammatory skin conditions affecting around 2-3% and 1% of the population, respectively. However, the coexistence of both diseases is rare. Common immunological mechanisms with altered T-cell-mediated autoimmunity, cytokine milieu, and Koebner phenomenon play a role in their pathogenesis. As reviewed in the literature, psoriasis may ind…
  • Refractory lupus panniculitis treated successfully with rituximab: Two cases. [Case Reports]
    Ann Afr Med. 2020 Jul-Sep; 19(3):207-210.Gupta P, Dhanawat A, … Padhan P
  • Lupus panniculitis is usually difficult to treat, and the patient is often put on multiple immunosuppressives with variable clinical response and relapses, notwithstanding the long-term side effects. We describe two cases of refractory lupus panniculitis which have been treated successfully with rituximab which is a chimeric anti-CD20 antibody. It reduces the number of circulating mature B-cells,…
