  • An update on drug-induced liver injury-What's new? [Review]
J Intern Med. 2026 Aug; 300(2):114-130.Björnsson ES, Andrade RJJI
  • Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an important medical condition. Recently, development of novel causality assessment tools has improved the diagnostic accuracy of idiosyncratic DILI, particularly RECAM (Revised Electronic Version of Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment [RUCAM]). RECAM was found to be better than RUCAM in difficult cases and increased the precision of the DILI diagnosis but needs…

  • Hepatotoxicity of dietary supplements containing Garcinia gummi-gutta (L.) N. Robson. [Review]
Pharm Biol. 2025 Dec; 63(1):912-924.van Breemen RB, Roe AL, Akhtar NPB
  • CONCLUSIONS: Garcinia toxicity was consistent with drug-induced liver injury and included elevated serum liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase with a high ratio of ALT to alkaline phosphatase. Proposed mechanisms of toxicity include genetic predisposition to immune-mediated reactions involving the human leucocyte antigen HLA-B*35:01 allele, induction of hepatocyte oxidative stress and inflammation, and hepatocyte apoptosis caused by the active constituent, hydroxycitric acid, which inhibits mitochondria ATP-citrate lyase.

  • The popularity of plant-based food supplements has risen all across the globe, supported by the assumption that anything natural is safe. However, these supplements usually consist of various plant mixtures, posing a problem for the detection of undeclared regulated plants.
