It would seem that the present female riders would obtain benefits from additional strength training for both maximal and explosive strength gains.

Rivers represent the main source of mercury (Hg) in the Southern Baltic. Nevertheless, the concentration and proportion of individual Hg forms in rivers depend on the management of the river basin, as well as on the intensity of meteorological phenomena. Hence the aim of the present study was to determine the influence of drought and rains/intense rains on the content of labile and stable Hg forms in the soil of river catchments with various types of land management, and on the inflow of bioavailable mercury to the coastal zone of the sea. Soil and sediment samples were taken from two rivers flowing into Puck Bay (Southern Baltic): the Reda and Gizdepka. In order to determine Hg concentration and the proportions of its particular forms in the collected material, the thermo-desorption method was used. Five periods were identified during which the soil was enriched with various Hg forms. The obtained results showed that in periods of intensive development of vegetation, the soil becomes enriched with absorbed mercury (Hgabs). On the other hand, as a result of Hg emissions during the heating of buildings, mercury associated with halides (Hgads1) is deposited on land, as was primarily recorded in catchments where individual household furnaces were found. Both mild and intense rainfalls intensified the surface run-off, which contributed to soil erosion, causing the transport of both Hgabs and Hgads1 to the river bed. However, the soil was more enriched with labile mercury in anthropogenic catchments, as they are only slightly overgrown with vegetation, the presence of which limits soil erosion. During periods of snow melting, there was intensive leaching and transportation of Hgads1, which had been deposited on the land surface during the intensive combustion of fossil fuels. In each of the designated periods, stable mercury sulphide was formed in the soil. However, the highest proportion of HgS was found during a period of drought, when organic matter decomposed and there was inflow of sulphur compounds from farms. Taking into consideration the anomalous study periods, the largest load of mercury introduced along with the bed sediment of the Gizdepka into the sea was recorded during downpour/flood. Nevertheless, the most bioavailable Hg-enriched load was introduced during snow melting period.

- CONCLUSIONS: Malnutrition and sarcopenia were highly prevalent in patients with hepatic cirrhosis and should be assessed routinely in clinical practice. PG-SGA can be considered a good marker of sarcopenia that can be used in clinical practice.

Additionally, small alterations in BC, such as low FFM, and reduced HGS values can be considered markers of nutritional deficiency. Therefore, the assessment of BC should be recommended in clinical practice for screening and monitoring the nutritional status of CD patients.

Patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) may be affected by sarcopenia, which is a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder characterized by muscle mass atrophy with decline of muscle strength and function. The aim was to evaluate differences in the diagnosis and prevalence of sarcopenia according to European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP). The screening for sarcopenia was performed in PD patients older than 18 years, with evaluation of appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMMI), handgrip strength (HGS) and gait speed (GS). The diagnosis was according to the 2010 and 2019 versions of EWGSOP consensus on sarcopenia. Fifty subjects on PD were included, mean age 55.74 ± 16.22 years old, 52% female. The prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 4 to 10% according to cut points and references used.

The influence of elemental sulfur (S(0)) amendment on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in rice and the chemical form of Hg in the rhizosphere were investigated under waterlogged conditions in Hg-contaminated soil (the majority of the Hg (˜70%) in forms similar to HgS). Different levels of S(0) addition increased the MeHg accumulation in rice. After a sequential extraction analysis of the chemical forms of Hg in the rhizosphere, the results showed that S(0) addition increased the organic bound Hg and decreased the residual Hg in the soils. An Hg LIII XANES further showed that S(0) addition increased the proportion of Hg in the form of RS-Hg-SR and decreased the proportion of Hg in the form of HgS, indicating that S(0) input may reactivate the non-bioavailable Hg in the rhizosphere and improve the net Hg methylation. These findings suggest that the application of S fertilizers to Hg-contaminated paddy soils may increase the MeHg concentration in the edible parts of crops, which may lead to more potential health problems in humans depending on the crop type. However, our study also suggests that S(0) addition could be an effective measure for mobilizing the insoluble Hg and accelerating the phytoremediation process in Hg-contaminated paddy soils.

The Cyathostominae (Nematoda, Strongyloidea) parasitising equines represent a diverse group currently including 50 species. However, their taxonomy has been repeatedly revised and occasionally the presence of cryptic genospecies was suggested. Moreover, molecular- and morphology-based phylogenetic analyses give divergent results. For instance, molecular data have suggested close relationship between Coronocyclus coronatus and Cylicostephanus calicatus, although morphology-based taxonomy places them in different genera. Here, nuclear (internal transcribed spacer 2, ITS-2) and mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase I, COI) sequences were obtained from the same individual, morphologically identified worms. In both morphospecies, two ITS-2 sequences types were observed: In Cor. coronatus, a small PCR product of 278 bp (nuclear haplotype group nHGBco) was always present but often in combination with a larger 369-370 bp fragment (nHGAco). In Cys. calicatus, either a large 370 bp product (nHGAca) or a short 281 bp amplicon (nHGBca) were found, but never both. Sequence identity between morphospecies was up to 100%. The smaller differed from the larger fragments by deletion of the region 110-198 in Cor. coronatus and 112-203 in Cys. calicatus. In COI, three and five mitochondrial haplotype groups (HGs), mtHG1co-mtHG3co and mtHG1ca-mtHG5ca were identified for Cor. coronatus and Cys. calicatus, respectively. In Cor. coronatus, there was no particular association of mtHG with nuclear genotypes (only nHGBco vs. both nHGBco plus nHGAco). In Cys. calicatus the nHGAca was always associated with the mtHG1ca, mtHG2ca or mtHG5ca whereas nHGBca was exclusively associated with mtHG3ca or mtHG4ca. Despite up to 100% identity in the nHGs, no mixing of mtHGs was observed between both species. Clear separation of certain nHGs with particular mtHGs in Cys. calicatus, despite the fact that the same host individuals were infected with both groups simultaneously, suggests presence of two non-interbreeding genospecies within Cys. calicatus, which needs further confirmation using additional samples from diverse geographical origins.

A facile and general strategy is presented for homogenous and ultrathin metal sulfide-wrapping on plasmonic metal (PM) nanoparticles (NPs) based on a thiourea-induced isotropic shell growth. This strategy is typically implemented just via adding the thiourea into pre-formed PM colloidal solutions containing target metal ions. The validity of this strategy is demonstrated by taking the wrapped NPs with Au core and CuS shell or Au@CuS NPs as an example. They are successfully fabricated via adding the thiourea and Cu2+ solutions into pre-formed Au NP colloidal solution. The CuS shell layer is highly homogenous (<10% in relative standard deviation of shell thickness), regardless of the NPs' shape or curvature. The shell thickness can be controlled from tens down to 0.5 nm just by the addition amounts of the shell precursors. The formation of the shell layer on the Au NPs can be attributed to the alternative deposition of Cu2+ and S2- ions on the thiourea-modified surface of Au NPs in the solution, which induces the isotropic shell growth. Further, this strategy is of good universality. Many other sulfide-wrapped PM NPs, such as Ag@CuS, Au@PtS2, Au@HgS, Ag@Ag2S NPs and Ag@CuS nanorods have been successfully obtained with homogeneous and ultrathin shells. Importantly, such ultrathin sulfide-wrapped PM NPs can be used for SERS-based detection of trace heavy metal ions with strong anti-interference via ion exchange process between the metal sulfide shell and heavy metal ions. This study provides a simple and controllable route for wrapping the homogenous and ultrathin sulfide layers on the PM NPs, and such wrapped NPs have good practical applications in the SERS-based detection of trace heavy metal ions.

- CONCLUSIONS: A significant reduction in MUNIX values related to motor impairment was observed in CSA patients, even in the subclinical stage. Compared to measures of motor function, the MUNIX measurements in the patients with CSA improved more noticeably after surgical intervention.MUNIX may serve as an available supplementary test to quantitatively evaluate the motor dysfunction in CSA and to track its progression, that is complementary to conventional electromyography.
