  • Differentiation of hydrochlorothiazide-induced dermatitis from stasis dermatitis. [Case Reports]
    BMJ Case Rep. 2022 Sep 20; 15(9)Abdelwahab R, Tangalos EG, Matulis J
  • A woman in her 60s with a history of hypertension and stasis dermatitis presented to a primary care clinic with a bilateral, erythematous rash on the legs, stomach, and chest. Photosensitive rash and dermatitis may be caused by many conditions. Hydrochlorothiazide-induced dermatitis is a rare side effect of thiazide diuretics. Early identification of sulfa-sensitivity and photoallergic or phototo…
  • Compounded medications for cardiovascular use in neonatology: an integrative review. [Review]
Rev Paul Pediatr. 2022; 41:e2021167.Greenhalgh LL, Passos MMBD, … Monteiro MSSB
  • CONCLUSIONS: It was possible to analyze the profile of compounded cardiovascular medicines prescribed in neonatology in Brazil. The results showed the need for the development of medications suitable for the neonatal population, and the standardization of operational procedures for preparing extemporaneous formulations in neonatology to increase drug safety.
  • Comparative antiplatelet effects of chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide. [Journal Article]
    J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich). 2022 Sep 06 [Online ahead of print]Bashir K, Burns T, … Hilleman DE
  • Chlorthalidone (CTD) may be superior to hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in the reduction of adverse cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients. The mechanism of the potential benefit of CTD could be related to antiplatelet effects. The objective of this study was to determine if CTD or HCTZ have antiplatelet effects. This study was a prospective, double-blind, randomized, three-way crossover compa…
  • Hydrochlorothiazide/Losartan Potassium Tablet Prepared by Direct Compression. [Journal Article]
    Pharmaceutics. 2022 Aug 21; 14(8)Luo Q, Zhang Q, Wang P
  • Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)/losartan potassium (LOS-K) was used as a model drug to prepare compound tablets through the investigation of the compression and mechanical properties of mixed powders to determine the formulation and preparation factors, followed by D-optimal mixture experimental design to optimize the final parameters. The type and amount of lactose monohydrate (SuperTab®14SD, 19.53-2…
  • A Rare Culprit of Methemoglobinemia. [Case Reports]
    J Investig Med High Impact Case Rep. 2022 Jan-Dec; 10:23247096221117919.Fadah K, Rivera M, … Deoker A
  • Methemoglobinemia is a rare cause of hypoxia and can be a diagnostic challenge early in the disease course. The incidence of medication-induced methemoglobinemia is more common than congenital-related methemoglobinemia. The most common cause of methemoglobinemia is exposure to household detergents, illicit drugs, or medications with nitrate or sulfonamide chemical groups. The 2 main medications a…
  • KCC3a, a Strong Candidate Pathway for K+ Loss in Alkalemia. [Journal Article]
Front Cell Dev Biol. 2022; 10:931326.Ferdaus MZ, Terker AS, … Delpire E
  • Loss-of-function mutations in the human potassium chloride cotransporter-3 (KCC3) cause a hereditary motor sensory neuropathy associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum. While recapitulating the neuropathy, KCC3-knockout mice also exhibit high blood pressure. This phenotype is believed to have neurogenic and/or vascular origins. The role of KCC3 in the kidney is poorly understood. KCC3 is en…
  • A Unique Case of Localized Palmar Erythema Annulare Centrifugum. [Case Reports]
    Cureus. 2022 Jun; 14(6):e25718.Clyatt G, Cole J
  • Figurate erythemas (FE) are a group of diseases defined by the presence of annular or arciform erythematous skin lesions that can occur anywhere on the body. Four different types of figurate erythemas have been described: erythema annulare centrifugum (EAC), erythema gyratum repens (EGR), erythema migrans, and erythema marginatum. While each of these presents with similar morphologies, the clinic…
  • Comparative dissolution studies of 3D-printed inserts in a novel biopharmaceutical bladder model. [Journal Article]
    Int J Pharm. 2022 Aug 25; 624:121984.Rahman-Yildir J, Wiedey R, Breitkreutz J
  • Urinary tract disorders come at great discomfort to the patients suffering from them. To treat them, several potent drug substances are available but unfortunately, systemic drug therapy often comes along with undesired adverse effects. Previous work has therefore been conducted aiming at a local drug release in the urinary bladder. However, whether a therapeutically relevant drug concentration m…
  • Baboon syndrome (SDRIFE) after valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide intake for several years. [Journal Article]
    Dermatol Reports. 2022 Jun 16; 14(2):9412.Tchernev G, Oliveira N, Kandathil LJ
  • Herein, we present a case of baboon syndrome/SDRIFE that occurred after intake of valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide for several years. The patient falls within the five diagnostic criteria and to the best of our knowledge, there have been no previous reports associating valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide with baboon syndrome/SDRIFE. Withdrawal of the anti-hypertensive drugs and initiation of topical and s…
  • Associations of thiazide use with skin cancers: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Meta-Analysis]
    BMC Med. 2022 07 07; 20(1):228.Shao SC, Lai CC, … Chi CC
  • CONCLUSIONS: Hydrochlorothiazide is associated with an increased risk for NMSC (especially SCC) and melanoma in non-Asian countries, whereas bendroflumethiazide and indapamide are not associated with a meaningful risk for skin cancers. Healthcare professionals and patients should be informed of the different risk profiles of skin cancers associated with different thiazides, cumulative doses, and regions.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide use, sun exposure, and risk of keratinocyte cancer. [Journal Article]
BMC Public Health. 2022 07 02; 22(1):1282.VanWormer JJ, Abokede EB, Berg RL
  • CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with prior studies, longer duration of HCTZ use was a predictor of NMSC in north-central Wisconsin adults. NMSC may be accelerated in HCTZ users with outdoor lifestyles, but future studies should attempt to further disaggregate specific effects of sun exposure time, HCTZ duration, and age on NMSC development.
