  • Finding hotspots: development of an adaptive spatial sampling approach. [Journal Article]
    Sci Rep. 2020 Jul 02; 10(1):10939.Andrade-Pacheco R, Rerolle F, … Sturrock HJW
  • The identification of disease hotspots is an increasingly important public health problem. While geospatial modeling offers an opportunity to predict the locations of hotspots using suitable environmental and climatological data, little attention has been paid to optimizing the design of surveys used to inform such models. Here we introduce an adaptive sampling scheme optimized to identify hotspo…
  • Schistosome and intestinal helminth modulation of Macrophage Immunometabolism. [Review]
    Immunology. 2020 Jul 02 [Online ahead of print]Cortes-Selva D, Fairfax K
  • Macrophages are fundamental to sustain physiological equilibrium and to regulate the pathogenesis of parasitic and metabolic processes. The functional heterogeneity and immune responses of macrophages are shaped by cellular metabolism in response to the host's intrinsic factors, environmental cues and other stimuli during disease. Parasite infections induce a complex cascade of cytokines and meta…
  • Pharmacological Uses of the Plants Belonging to the Genus Commiphora. [Journal Article]
Cardiovasc Hematol Agents Med Chem. 2020 Jul 02 [Online ahead of print]Latha S, Selvamani P, Prabha T
  • Natural products have a unique place in the healthcare industry. The genus Commiphora emerged as a potential medicinal with huge benefits as evidenced through its use in various traditional and modern systems of medicine. Therefore, we aimed to prepare a concise review on the pharmacological activities and the indigenous uses of various plant species belonging to the genus Commiphora along with t…
  • Comparison of non-schistosomal colorectal cancer and schistosomal colorectal cancer. [Journal Article]
    World J Surg Oncol. 2020 Jul 01; 18(1):149.Wang W, Lu K, … Zhu T
  • CONCLUSIONS: Schistosomiasis was significantly correlated with OS, and it was an independent prognostic factor for OS in the whole cohort. When patients were stratified according to clinical stage and lymph node metastasis state, schistosomiasis was still an independently unfavorable prognosis factor for OS in patients with stage III-IV tumors or patients with lymph node metastasis.
  • Detection of circulating cell-free DNA to diagnose Schistosoma japonicum infection. [Journal Article]
    Acta Trop. 2020 Jun 26; 211:105604.Ullah H, Qadeer A, Giri BR
  • Schistosomiasis occurs in 240 million people worldwide and is a major public health concern. Thus, early diagnosis and monitoring of schistosomiasis progression are needed to treat patients. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is present as fragments of parasite-derived DNA in host body fluids. Detection of this cfDNA in host blood may be a promising diagnostic marker of schistosomiasis. Therefore, in this stu…
  • [Evolution of pathogenetic therapy of pulmonary arterial hypertension]. [Journal Article]
Ter Arkh. 2019 Dec 15; 91(12):4-9.Chazova IE, Yarovoy SY, Danilov NM
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe, disabling disease characterized by an increase pressure in the pulmonary artery (PA), an increase pressure in the right atrium, and a decrease of the cardiac output. It combines several diseases: idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, inherited pulmonary hypertension, PAH induced by medication and toxins, PAH associated with systemic diseases of conn…
  • Sensitive diagnostic tools and targeted drug administration strategies are needed to eliminate schistosomiasis. [Review]
Lancet Infect Dis. 2020 Jul; 20(7):e165-e172.Amoah AS, Hoekstra PT, … van Dam GJ
  • Although preventive chemotherapy has been instrumental in reducing schistosomiasis incidence worldwide, serious challenges remain. These problems include the omission of certain groups from campaigns of mass drug administration, the existence of persistent disease hotspots, and the risk of recrudescent infections. Central to these challenges is the fact that the diagnostic tools currently used to…
  • Associations between schistosomiasis and HIV-1 acquisition risk in four prospective cohorts: a nested case-control analysis. [Journal Article]
J Int AIDS Soc. 2020 Jun; 23(6):e25534.Bochner AF, Baeten JM, … Barnabas RV
  • CONCLUSIONS: Schistosomiasis was not a strong risk factor for HIV-1 acquisition in these four prospective studies. S. mansoni was responsible for the majority of schistosomiasis in these cohorts, and our results do not support the hypothesis that S. mansoni infection is associated with increased HIV-1 acquisition risk. S. haematobium infection was associated with a point estimate of elevated HIV-1 risk in the FSW cohort that was not statistically significant, and there was no trend towards a positive association in the serodiscordant couples cohorts.
  • Behind Enemy Lines: Immunomodulatory Armamentarium of the Schistosome Parasite. [Review]
Front Immunol. 2020; 11:1018.Angeles JMM, Mercado VJP, Rivera PT
  • The deeply rooted, intricate relationship between the Schistosoma parasite and the human host has enabled the parasite to successfully survive within the host and surreptitiously evade the host's immune attacks. The parasite has developed a variety of strategies in its immunomodulatory armamentarium to promote infection without getting harmed or killed in the battlefield of immune responses. Thes…
  • Endophytic Fungi In The Fight Against Neglected Tropical Diseases. [Journal Article]
Mini Rev Med Chem. 2020 Jun 24 [Online ahead of print]Costa MBS, de Oliveira CM
  • Neglected tropical diseases are a serious global public health problem and they are one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity, especially in underdeveloped countries. These diseases have several implications for health and they are considered a priority in global eradication programs for disease control. The aim of this mini-review is to report recent studies on the fight against neglecte…
