The mechanical dewatering of sludge is important in order to achieve a high dry matter content, thereby lowering the transportation cost and the energy consumption during incineration. Thermogravimetric analysis is sometimes used to estimate the maximum dry matter content obtainable from mechanical dewatering, by measuring the critical moisture point. In this paper, the critical moisture point of digested sludge was measured and compared with vapour sorption curves. The critical moisture point was determined for raw and conditioned sludge to be 3.4 kg of water per kg of dry matter, corresponding to 23% w/w dry matter. This value was lower than the dry matter content obtained from the mechanical dewatering process, indicating that the dry matter content can exceed the critical moisture point. Moisture vapour sorption was measured for raw, conditioned, and dewatered sludges. The Blahovec and Yanniotis sorption isotherm fitted the experimental data well. Between 10 and 12 g of water was adsorbed as a monolayer per 100 g of dry matter. The rest of the moisture content was explained by the non-ideal Raoult's law, by including the effect of dissolved ions. At water activities above 0.95, the moisture content was determined by capillary condensation and cake compressibility. The water activity was higher than 0.95 at the critical moisture point and the capillary pressure was estimated to be 4-6 bars. This pressure was responsible for cake compression during drying, while the relatively low dry matter content at the critical moisture point may be due to the low capillary pressure.

For role limitations caused by physical health problems, patients in the laparoscopic group reported better scores up to 4 months after surgery. Based on our results we cannot confirm the contribution of the RECQL variant c.1667_1667+3delAGTA allele to breast cancer development.

Cancer cells exploit many of the cellular adaptive responses to support their survival needs. One such critical pathway in eukaryotic cells is the unfolded protein response (UPR) that is important in normal physiology as well as disease states, including cancer. Since UPR can serve as a lever between survival and death, regulated control of its activity is critical for tumor formation and growth although the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we show that one of the main transcriptional effectors of UPR, activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4), is essential for prostate cancer (PCa) growth and survival. Using systemic unbiased gene expression and proteomic analyses, we identified a novel direct ATF4 target gene, family with sequence similarity 129 member A (FAM129A), which is critical in mediating ATF4 effects on prostate tumorigenesis. Interestingly, FAM129A regulated both PERK and eIF2α in a feedback loop that differentially channeled the UPR output. ATF4 and FAM129A protein expression is increased in patient PCa samples compared with benign prostate. Importantly, in vivo therapeutic silencing of ATF4-FAM129A axis profoundly inhibited tumor growth in a preclinical PCa model. These data support that one of the canonical UPR branches, through ATF4 and its target gene FAM129A, is required for PCa growth and thus may serve as a novel therapeutic target.

High-temperature superconductors (HTS) could enable high-field magnets stronger than is possible with Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn, but two challenges have so far been the low engineering critical current density JE, especially in high-current cables, and the danger of quenches. Most HTS magnets made so far have been made out of REBCO coated conductor. Here we demonstrate stable, reliable and training-quench-free performance of Bi-2212 racetrack coils wound with a Rutherford cable fabricated from wires made with a new precursor powder. These round multifilamentary wires exhibited a record JE up to 950 A/mm2 at 30 T at 4.2 K. These coils carried up to 8.6 kA while generating 3.5 T at 4.2 K at a JE of 1020 A/mm2. Different from the unpredictable training performance of Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn magnets, these Bi-2212 magnets showed no training quenches and entered the flux flow state in a stable manner before thermal runaway and quench occurred. Also different from Nb-Ti, Nb3Sn, and REBCO magnets for which localized thermal runaways occur at unpredictable locations, the quenches of Bi-2212 magnets consistently occurred in the high field regions over a long conductor length. These characteristics make quench detection simple, enabling safe protection, and suggest a new paradigm of constructing quench-predictable superconducting magnets from Bi-2212.
