  • Obesity and Pulmonary Function in African Americans. [Journal Article]
  • PlosPLoS One 2015; 10(10):e0140610
  • Mehari A, Afreen S, … Thomas AV
  • CONCLUSIONS: We showed that BMI has significant effects on lung function in AA adults and the greatest effects were on FRC and ERV, which occurred at BMI values < 30 kg/m2. These physiological effects of weight gain should be considered when interpreting PFTs and their effects on respiratory symptoms even in the absence of disease and may also exaggerate existing lung diseases.
  • Inhaled Interferon and Diffusion Capacity in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). [Randomized Controlled Trial]
  • SVSarcoidosis Vasc Diffuse Lung Dis 2015; 32(1):37-42
  • Skaria SD, Yang J, … Smaldone GC
  • CONCLUSIONS: DLCO was significantly improved following inhaled (IFN-γ) as treatment for IPF. Our data suggest that previous studies utilizing parenteral IFN-γ may have failed because of the mode of delivery. Future randomized, controlled, phase 3 trials, comparing the difference in PFT behavior (specifically DLCO) longitudinally may be more sensitive to drug effect and serve as a valuable clinical endpoint.
  • Abnormal pulmonary function in adults with sickle cell anemia. [Journal Article]
  • AJAm J Respir Crit Care Med 2006 Jun 1; 173(11):1264-9
  • Klings ES, Wyszynski DF, … Steinberg MH
  • CONCLUSIONS: Pulmonary function is abnormal in 90% of adult patients with Hb-SS. Common abnormalities include restrictive physiology and decreased DLCO. Decreased DLCO may indicate more severe sickle vasculopathy characterized by impaired hepatic and renal function.
