The major cause of end-stage renal disease is the diabetic nephropathy. Oxidative stress contributes to the development of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this study we have evaluated the effect of a diet with a new standardized of red orange and lemon extract (RLE) rich in anthocyanins (ANT) in the progression of the kidney disease on Zucker diabetic fatty rats. Oxidative stress and renal function were analyzed. In diabetic rats, the RLE restored the blood glucose levels, body weight, and normalized the reactive oxygen species (ROS) total pathways. The kidney inflammation, in diabetic rats, has not shown significant change, showing that the oxidative stress rather than to inflammatory processes is a triggering factor in the renal complication associated with T2DM. Therefore, the administration of the RLE prevents this complication and this effect could be related to the inhibition of ROS production.

Effects of various co-pigment sources [gallic acid (GA), rose leaf extract (RLE), cherry stem extract (CSE), pomegranate rind extract (PRE) and green tea extract (GTE)] on anthocyanin content, colour, and turbidity in sour cherry nectar (SCN), sweetened with sucrose (SCNS), maltose syrup (SCNM) or honey (SCNH), were investigated during storage at 20 °C. Co-pigment sources were associated with increases in λmax (up to 4.1 nm), colour density (up to 22%), and polymeric colour (up to 1.7 times). Among the co-pigment sources, GA and PRE were associated with the greater anthocyanin stabilities in SCNS and SCNH. Moreover, the lowest turbidity, at the beginning of storage, and turbidity formation rate, throughout storage, were observed in SCNS, SCNM and SCNH containing PRE. When the changes in Amax, λmax, polymeric colour, colour density, and turbidity were considered together, PRE was the best co-pigment source, regardless of the sweetener used.

Atomic engineering is envisioned to involve selectively inducing the desired dynamics of single atoms and combining these steps for larger-scale assemblies. Here, we focus on the first part by surveying the single-step dynamics of graphene dopants, primarily phosphorus, caused by electron irradiation both in experiment and simulation, and develop a theory for describing the probabilities of competing configurational outcomes depending on the postcollision momentum vector of the primary knock-on atom. The predicted branching ratio of configurational transformations agrees well with our atomically resolved experiments. This suggests a way for biasing the dynamics toward desired outcomes, paving the road for designing and further upscaling atomic engineering using electron irradiation.

The use of riding lawn equipment (RLE) is related to a significant number of accidents every year. To provide basis for product design and enhance user performance and safety, a usability and performance assessment of modern riding lawn-mowing tractor designs and features was conducted in a real-world test environment. Five current commercially available RLEs were tested with response measures including task performance time and accuracy, physiological workload, system usability scores (SUS), and subjective rankings of RLE models. This data was used to identify sensitivity of responses to variations in RLE design features and functionality. The data was also used to assess the validity of new tractor design standard conformance tool, the RLEval methodology. This tool made comprehensive evaluation of RLE models compliance with over 70 specific design standards and was applied by human factors experts. Experiment results revealed sensitivity of all response measures to design differences among the five RLE models, except the objective workload measures. Response measures including task performance, SUSs and subjective rankings showed partial agreement with the RLEval scores. In general, the study results demonstrated a comprehensive experimental methodology for usability and performance evaluations of RLEs as well as merit of using the RLEval as preliminary method to compare design features. Some aspects of the usability experimentation and the RLEval method appear to be complementary.

- CONCLUSIONS: GA-enhanced, MRI-derived, HBP-based parameters showed excellent inter- and intra-observer agreement. All HBP-based parameters correlated with clinical and laboratory scores of hepatic dysfunction, with no significant differences between each other.• Radiological parameters that quantify the hepatic uptake of gadoxetic acid are highly reproducible. • These parameters can be used interchangeably because they correlate with each other and with scores of hepatic dysfunction. • Assessment of these parameters may be helpful in monitoring disease progression.

- CONCLUSIONS: Secondary procedure with implantation of iris-fixated intraocular lens yielded very good results for treatment of axial hyperopia in cases of posterior microphthalmos. The primary piggyback IOL showed less satisfactory results with cases of under correction and the possible complication of interlenticular opacification. Both groups showed good safety parameters.

Carotenoids are required for many biological processes in plants and humans. Lycopene ε-cyclase (LCY-ε) catalyzes the conversion of lycopene into lutein via the α-branch carotenoid biosynthesis pathway. Down-regulation of IbLCY-ε by RNAi increases carotenoid accumulation and salt stress tolerance in transgenic sweetpotato calli. As the role of IbLCY-ε in carotenoid biosynthesis and environmental stress responses in whole plants is poorly understood, transgenic sweetpotato (RLE plants) with reduced expression of IbLCY-ε were developed. RLE plants contained higher levels of total carotenoid and β-carotene, due to an elevated β-carotene/lutein ratio rather than increased de novo biosynthesis. RLE plants showed high reactive oxygen species/radical-scavenging activity. They also exhibited an enhanced tolerance of both salt and drought stress, which was associated with lower membrane permeability and a higher photosynthetic rate, respectively. Elevated carotenoid accumulation in RLE plants mitigated the reductions in leaf photosystem II efficiency and chlorophyll induced by abiotic stress. Expression of the carotenoid cleavage genes 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase, carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 1 (CCD1) and CCD4 was higher in RLE plants, as was abscisic acid accumulation. IbLCY-ε silencing thus offers an effective approach for developing sweetpotato plants with increased tolerance to abiotic stress that will grow on global marginal lands with no reduction in nutritional value.
