  • Alterations of CCR2 and CX3CR1 on Three Monocyte Subsets During HIV-1/Treponema pallidum Coinfection. [Journal Article]
    Front Med (Lausanne). 2020; 7:272.Guo N, Chen Y, … Zhang T
  • HIV-1/Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum) coinfection has become a global challenge, and three monocyte subsets express varying levels of the chemokine receptors CCR2 and CX3CR1. We recently evaluated the association between monocyte subsets and regulatory T cells in HIV-infected individuals with syphilis. Currently, the dynamic changes of CCR2 and CX3CR1 on monocyte subsets during HIV-1 and syphili…
  • Prevalence, associated factors and clinical features of congenital syphilis among newborns in Mbarara hospital, Uganda. [Journal Article]
    BMC Pregnancy Childbirth. 2020 Jul 02; 20(1):385.Oloya S, Lyczkowski D, … Mwanga-Amumpaire J
  • CONCLUSIONS: We found higher-than-expected syphilis sero-prevalence rates in a high risk population of postnatal mothers and their newborns in Uganda. Bridge populations for syphilis may include mothers not tested during pregnancy, who are usually married and not treated. In accordance with our results, the national policy for syphilis control in Uganda should be strengthened to include universal syphilis screening amongst mother-newborn pairs in postnatal clinics with subsequent partner notification.
  • Acute human immunodeficiency virus infection associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. [Case Reports]
    IDCases. 2020; 21:e00861.Egge SL, Cheeti A, Hayat S
  • Although acute HIV-induced HLH is rare in literature, HIV is an important differential diagnosis in patients with HLH. In our study, a 33-year-old previously healthy male patient was admitted with fever of unknown origin, lymphadenopathy, generalized edema, transaminitis, acute renal failure, oliguria, myalgias, night sweats, unintentional weight loss, and leukopenia. Disease course was indicativ…

  • Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum. There are different stages of syphilis: primary, secondary, and tertiary, which are defined by clinical manifestations of the disease. Those who are infected but are asymptomatic have latent syphilis. Without adequate treatment, neurological and cardiovascular anomalies may develop, and infec…
  • Fe3+-NTA as iron source for solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH in raceway pond reactors. [Journal Article]
    Sci Total Environ. 2020 May 23; 736:139617.Mejri A, Soriano-Molina P, … Sánchez Pérez JA
  • This work presents, for the first time, a kinetic study of the solar photo-Fenton process at neutral pH mediated by the Fe3+-NTA complex (molar ratio 1: 1) applied to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). To this end, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) secondary effluents were treated in a raceway pond reactor (RPR) at pilot plant scale with 0.1 mM Fe3+-NTA and 0.88 mM H2O2 under average…
  • Genetic mapping and genomic selection for maize stalk strength. [Journal Article]
    BMC Plant Biol. 2020 May 07; 20(1):196.Liu X, Hu X, … Huang C
  • CONCLUSIONS: The genetic architecture of RPR is highly genetically complex. Multiple minor effect QTL are jointly involved in controlling phenotypic variation in RPR. Several pleiotropic QTL identified in multiple stages may contain reliable genes and can be used to develop functional markers for improving the selection efficiency of stalk strength. The application of genomic selection to RPR may be a promising approach to accelerate breeding process for improving stalk strength and enhancing lodging-resistance.
  • Ocular syphilis in Pacific peoples-are we making misdiagnoses secondary to yaws? [Journal Article]
    N Z Med J. 2020 Apr 24; 133(1513):53-60.Gill H, Danesh-Meyer HV, … Niederer RL
  • CONCLUSIONS: Syphilitic uveitis is common in New Zealand, occurring in 1 in 55 patients seen in consultant uveitis clinics. Clinicians should consider a history of yaws in Pacific peoples presenting with ocular inflammation and positive treponemal serology. In these cases alternative causes of ocular pathology should be included as differentials. In cases of diagnostic uncertainty, the risk of treatment versus the potentially severe sequelae of untreated syphilis need to be considered.
  • Syphilis seroprevalence among HIV-infected males in Istanbul, Turkey. [Journal Article]
Rev Argent Microbiol. 2020 Mar 13 [Online ahead of print]Köksal MO, Beka H, … Ağaçfidan A
  • Syphilis has become a serious issue for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients worldwide in recent years; however, the studies related to HIV coinfection and syphilis reinfections in Istanbul, Turkey, are limited. Our objective was to determine the seroprevalence of syphilis among HIV-infected men in the city which has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Turkey. Two hundred a…
