- CONCLUSIONS: Subjects were able to successfully wear the retainer and upload the data to the mobile application and cloud database. Patient compliance and technical issues could be monitored daily via the provider webpage, and early intervention was possible with reminder messaging. The Bluetooth-enabled retainer showed a clinically acceptable level of accuracy and usability that validates it for future clinical testing.

Ewing sarcoma (ES), a common pediatric primary bone neoplasm, has a well-defined genomic landscape with various predisposing genomic elements including TP53, PMS2 and RET. Additionally, germline and somatic variants in protein tyrosine phosphatase delta (PTPRD), a tumor suppressor gene, have been identified in a limited number of ES patients. Here we present an ES patient, remarkable in terms of his young age and extent at presentation, found to have a PTPRD CNV. We explore the pathogenicity of this CNV, describe the patient's clinical course and touch upon the potential therapeutic implications in this subset of patients.

Chronic care patients undergoing hemodialysis for treatment of end-stage renal failure experience higher rates of bloodstream-associated infection due to the patients' compromised immune system and management of the bloodstream through catheters. Staphylococcus species are acommon cause of hemodialysis catheterrelated bloodstream infections. We investigated environmental bacterial contamination of dialysis wards and contamination of hemodialysis devices to determine the source of bacteria for these infections. All bacterial samples were collected by the swab method and the agarose stamp method. And which bacterium were identified by BBL CRYSTAL Kit or 16s rRNA sequences. In our data, bacterial cell number of hemodialysis device was lower than environment of patient surrounds. But Staphylococcus spp. were found predominantly on the hemodialysis device (46.8%), especially on areas frequently touched by healthcare-workers (such as Touch screen). Among Staphylococcus spp., Staphylococcus epidermidis was most frequently observed (42.1% of Staphylococcus spp.), and more surprising, 48.2% of the Staphylococcus spp. indicated high resistance for methicillin. Our finding suggests that hemodialysis device highly contaminated with bloodstream infection associated bacteria. This study can be used as a source to assess the risk of contamination-related infection and to develop the cleaning system for the better prevention for bloodstream infections in patients with hemodialysis. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of therapeutic touch on sleep quality in the elderly people living in the nursing homes. The study is a randomized controlled experimental study (pretest-posttest control group). The sample of the research consisted of 25 elderly people. As a result of the study, although there was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the sleep quality of each group, no significant difference was found between the groups (p > 0.05). Therapeutic touch is an effective method of improving the sleep quality of the elders living at a nursing home.

Advances in nanotechnology have empowered the design of bionanomaterials by assembling different types of natural biomolecules (e.g., nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids) as building blocks into nanoparticles (NPs) of 1-100 nm in diameter. Such bionanomaterials form the basis of useful nanomedicine applications, such as targeted delivery, gene regulation, molecular diagnostics, and immunomodulation. To achieve optimal performance in these applications, it is imperative that the NPs be delivered effectively to the organs, tissues, and cells of interest. A rational approach to facilitating the delivery of NPs is to develop a detailed and comprehensive understanding in their fundamental interactions with the biological system (or nano-bio interactions). Rigorous nano-bio research can provide mechanistic insights for circumventing the bottlenecks associated with inefficient and nonspecific delivery of NPs, catalyzing the clinical translation of nanomedicines. Cationic liposomes and lipid NPs are conventional carriers of therapeutic cargoes into cells due to their high ability to penetrate the cell membrane, a barrier comprised by an anionic phospholipid bilayer. Yet, cationic NPs tend to cause cytotoxicity and immune responses that may hamper their clinical translation. Contrary to cationic NPs, non-cationic NPs (be they near-neutral or anionic in surface charge) generally exhibit higher biocompatibility but enter mammalian cells in much less pronounced amounts. Intriguingly, some types of non-cationic NPs exhibit high biocompatibility and cellular uptake properties, all attractive features for intracellular delivery. In this Account, we present our studies of the interactions of non-cationic bionanomaterials with cells (or nano-cell interactions). To start with, we introduce the use of near-neutral poly(ethylene glycol)-coated NPs for probing the roles of two rarely explored physicochemical parameters on cellular uptake, namely, extracellular compression and alkylation. We next present the nano-cell interactions of two representative types of anionic bionanomaterials that effectively enter mammalian cells and have found widespread applications in the past decade, including DNA-coated NPs and polydopamine (PDA)-coated NPs. In our cell-based studies, we dissect the route of intracellular trafficking, pathway proteins that dictate cellular uptake, and trafficking of NPs. We further touch on our recent quantitative analysis of the cellular-level distribution of NPs in various organs and tissues of diseased animal models. Our results offer important design rules of NPs for achieving effective intracellular delivery and may even guide us to explore nanomedicine applications that we did not conceive before, such as using DNA-coated NPs for targeting atherosclerotic plaques and PDA-coated plasmonic nanoworms for photothermal killing of cancer cells. We conclude with our perspectives in elucidating nano-bio interactions via a reductionist approach, calling for closer attention to the role of functional groups and more refined studies on the organelle-level distribution of NPs and the genetic basis of in vivo distribution of NPs.

- CONCLUSIONS: The novel dome-shaped plaques for the treatment of iris melanoma provide effective dose distribution, improved surgical maneuverability, and increased tolerability for the patient. This plaque model can be used to treat iris melanoma of various sizes, configurations, and locations, including the ciliary body. The need for a customized plaque platform for each patient is minimized.

Furthermore, these findings evidence that trained pediatric oncology nurses can insert Reiki into their clinical practice as a valid instrument for diminishing suffering from cancer in childhood.

- CONCLUSIONS: Older people, particularly older women, are the main recipients of healing in the UK, and they go for help with many problems, particularly mental health issues and pain. The majority have a positive experience, and come back for more. In addition to relief of symptoms, many have sensory experiences which could indicate that some special type of interaction was taking place between healer and healee.

Orthopaedic manual therapy (OMT) and osteopathy have been coexisting since a long time in Belgium to manage musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). There are millions of consultations per year in these both disciplines. Both of them offer good clinical outcomes as well as patient satisfaction with care, good cost-effectiveness, as well as minor side effects. Nevertheless, a major misunderstanding remains in Belgium concerning these both professions. A narrative review by Belgian experts in osteopathy and/or in OMT has been undertake. In Belgium, both professions present several major differences concerning the primary first care access, the recognition as health care profession, tailored reimbursement systems, types and organization of education, the use of rehabilitation and motor control, the integration of evidence based practice concept, the reasons/indications of consultation, the degree of confidence within the therapeutic touch concept. In the meantime, several similarities also exist including the integration of the bio-psycho-social model, the evaluation of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the treatment of MSDs using sometimes identical manual techniques, as well as the use of therapeutic education of the patient and specific clinical reasoning. This analysis may help health professionals, students and patients to better understand the convergences and divergences between these both disciplines of musculoskeletal care in Belgium.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hand massage and therapeutic touch on comfort and anxiety in the elderly living in nursing homes. The study was designed as a randomized controlled, experimental study (with a pre- and posttest control group). The study population comprised 255 older people aged 65-89 living in a nursing home in Izmir, a province in Turkey. The study sample included 30 older patients, who were assigned to hand massage (HM) (n = 10), therapeutic touch (TT) (n = 10) and control (C) (n = 10) groups. Of the elderly who participated in the study, 50% were female and 80% were single. It was determined that TT and HM decreased the anxiety and increased the comfort levels of the elderly living in the nursing home (p < 0.05). It is thought that nurses can easily integrate HM and TT which are non-medical, non-pharmacologic interventions with no adverse effects into care activities.
