  • Use of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) extract for benign prostatic hyperplasia. [Review]
    Food Sci Biotechnol 2019; 28(6):1599-1606Kwon Y
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous growth of the prostate. BPH commonly occurs in elderly men. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to BPH (LUTS/BPH) have significant impacts on their health. Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) extract (SPE) has been evaluated for its effectiveness in improvement of LUTS/BPH at preclinical and clinical levels. Potential mechanisms of actions …
  • Herbal preparations for the treatment of hair loss. [Review]
    Arch Dermatol Res 2019Zgonc Škulj A, Poljšak N, … Kreft S
  • Though hair does not serve any crucial physiological function in modern humans, it plays an important role in our self-esteem. Androgenic baldness (androgenic alopecia) and circular/spot baldness (alopecia areata) are the most common forms of hair loss. Many active ingredients of synthetic origin are available for treatment; however, they have a number of limitations. Their effectiveness and safe…
  • LiverTox: Clinical and Research Information on Drug-Induced Liver Injury: Saw Palmetto [BOOK]
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases: Bethesda (MD)BOOK
  • Saw palmetto is a popular herbal medication and extract derived from the fruit of the low growing, small palm, Serenoa repens, which has fan shaped leaves and is native to Florida and the Southeast United States. Currently, saw palmetto is used mostly for symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy. Saw palmetto has been implicated in rare cases of clinically apparent liver injury, but its specific …
  • Nutraceutical treatment and prevention of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. [Journal Article]
    Arch Ital Urol Androl 2019; 91(3)Cicero AFG, Allkanjari O, … Vitalone A
  • During the last years, pharmaceutical innovations in primary care are dramatically less frequent and will be even more rare in the next future. In this context, preclinical and clinical research oriented their interest toward natural compounds efficacy and safety, supporting the development of a new "nutraceutical" science. Medicinal plants, in the form of plant parts or extracts of them, are com…
  • [Prediction of the effectiveness of the therapy of LUTS/BPH by Serenoa repens extracts]. [Journal Article]
Urologiia 2019; (3):14-22Sivkov AV, Golovanov SA, Zhukova LV
  • CONCLUSIONS: The potential for effective prediction by the methods of predictive analytics and data mining of the separated results of drug therapy of LUTS / BPH according to the main clinical criteria was demonstrated. It is necessary to continue training and testing the model with the inclusion of new clinical observations in the data set. This approach is applicable to the creation of similar models for predicting the effect of other drugs.
  • Comparison of the Phytochemical Composition of Serenoa repens Extracts by a Multiplexed Metabolomic Approach. [Journal Article]
    Molecules 2019; 24(12)Marti G, Joulia P, … Fiorini-Puybaret C
  • Phytochemical extracts are highly complex chemical mixtures. In the context of an increasing demand for phytopharmaceuticals, assessment of the phytochemical equivalence of extraction procedures is of utmost importance. Compared to routine analytical methods, comprehensive metabolite profiling has pushed forward the concept of phytochemical equivalence. In this study, an untargeted metabolomic ap…
