  • High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin and the Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
    Circulation. 2020 01 21; 141(3):161-171.Chapman AR, Adamson PD, … High-STEACS Investigators
  • CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays and the recommendations of the Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction identified patients at high-risk of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular events but was not associated with consistent increases in treatment or improved outcomes. Trials of secondary prevention are urgently required to determine whether this risk is modifiable in patients without type 1 myocardial infarction.
  • Presenting Symptoms in Men and Women Diagnosed With Myocardial Infarction Using Sex-Specific Criteria. [Journal Article]
    J Am Heart Assoc. 2019 09 03; 8(17):e012307.Ferry AV, Anand A, … Mills NL
  • Background Sex-specific criteria are recommended for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction, but the impact of these on presenting characteristics is unknown. Methods and Results We evaluated patient-reported symptoms in 1941 patients (39% women) with suspected acute coronary syndrome attending the emergency department in a substudy of a prospective trial. Standardized criteria defined typical an…
  • Symptom Variability and Early Symptom Regression in the MAPP Study: A Prospective Study of Urological Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. [Journal Article]
    J Urol. 2016 11; 196(5):1450-1455.Stephens-Shields AJ, Clemens JQ, … MAPP Research Network
  • CONCLUSIONS: Patients with urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome show symptom variability. At study enrollment patients had worse symptoms on average, resulting in a regression effect that influenced the estimated proportion of those who were improved or worse. Prospective studies should include a run-in period to account for regression to the mean and other causes of early symptom regression. Further, symptom variability may be quantified and used to characterize longitudinal symptom profiles of urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
  • People with schizophrenia and depression have a low omega-3 index. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
    Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids. 2016 07; 110:42-7.Parletta N, Zarnowiecki D, … Meyer BJ
  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher in people with mental illness and is associated with a 30 year higher mortality rate in this population. Erythrocyte docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plus eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (omega-3 index)≤4% is a marker for increased mortality risk from CVD while >8% is protective. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are also important for brain function and may amelior…
  • The role of unregulated care providers in managing heart failure patients in long-term care facilities. [Journal Article]
J Clin Nurs. 2017 Mar; 26(5-6):849-861.Heckman GA, Boscart VM, … McKelvie RS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Optimising the management of heart failure in long-term care is contingent on greater engagement of unregulated care providers as active partners in the interprofessional care team. Interventions to improve heart failure management in long-term care must ensure that appropriate education is provided to all long-term care staff, including unregulated care providers, and in a manner that fosters greater and more effective interprofessional collaboration.Active and collaborative engagement unregulated care providers has the potential to improve the management of heart failure in long-term care residents.
